Certainly it sounds like it might lead to an appliance if you see an ortho....if you are lucky !

This is something which has affected me recently, I sort of mentioned it a little time ago.
I have had fake retainers and also fairly thick, full palate coverage plate for quite a few years, just purely because they fulfilled my own fetish for removables.
I had worn one or other of them continuously for a long time, then a little less after I had a molar removed.
During the last year or so of not wearing them so much I have become increasingly aware that I subconsciously clench my teeth and cause my tmj, left side, to click, which then causes aching. I try not to do it but then I realise I am doing it again.
I have now found that if I wear the plate, it acts like a bite plate with the bottom front teeth biting against it, I cannot make my tmj click. Much better and no joint aching.
So, I am now finding that I NEED to wear it. This is interesting because, of course, the novelty could wear off, and I dont want that !
I can speak equally well with or without the plate and I am fairly certain no one knows I am wearing it. I can eat with or without it. I usually keep it in to eat but If I am on my own I sometimes take it out and forget to put it back in, but then I become aware that I have started clenching my teeth and clicking the joint again and I HAVE to put it back in.
Its like wearing it for real.....In fact it IS wearing it for real....Which is what I wanted in the first place, or at least I did at the time !
I still have not got around to getting a new plate from the Braces Shop, this time with a tooth to fill the space, but I am feeling that I must do that now to prevent further trouble with the joint. I am just hoping that if I really have to wear it, I won't get to dislike it.
its a dilemma !

I am wondering what others think...Can you have too much of a good thing ?

Hi Nightguard!

Did your dentist recommend a contultation of an orthodontist?
TMJ is definitely a case for an orthodontist.
And, to fulfill your braces fetish, the ortho is also the better contact than a dentist.

Good luck so far from a lucky braces wearer

Hallo,

Massnahme:

Thanks for the head up!

But turns  out i don’t have bruxism and it might be TMJ.
Not sure if that will leads to braces, kind of exciting to know what’s next  ????

a nightguard is better than nothing but not as cool as removable braces or Hawley retainers.
You might insist in getting nightguards made of more thick acrylic (same material as retainers) instead of the thin plastic splints, as that thin material can cause allergies( smell and taste synthetic

The Bionator is larger and it's almost impossible to talk to it, so it's unsuitable for work. It would be too complicated professionally.

I own several, both open and closed.

That is brave of you to wear them to work. I have just got a bite jumping appliance and a lower expander and it’s so hard to speak, it’s quite embarrassing sometimes.

How do you find the bionator? They have always intreagued me.

Before, I wouldn't have dared, but since September 2025, I've been wearing a removable Hawley-type appliance every day. I have them in different colors (blue, yellow, orange, magenta, green, pink...) which I change regularly.

At work, no one has asked me any questions or seemed surprised.

At home, for several years now, I've been wearing appliances like the Bionator or Activator, with headgear, a Delaire mask, or something similar.

I'm going to a dentist appointment next week to assess my possible bruxism/grinding of teeth.
Just the idea of maybe getting a nightguard to help with that makes me excited, a kind of stress, but curious.

Do you think this process may fulfill my braces fetish? Because just thinking of it makes me as excited as i would be to get braces.
Has someone pass by this process?
It's something that have been going on for a while and i know i have good teeth, no big problem and no need for esthetic, so braces wouldn't be on the table.
