Certainly it sounds like it might lead to an appliance if you see an ortho....if you are lucky !
This is something which has affected me recently, I sort of mentioned it a little time ago.
I have had fake retainers and also fairly thick, full palate coverage plate for quite a few years, just purely because they fulfilled my own fetish for removables.
I had worn one or other of them continuously for a long time, then a little less after I had a molar removed.
During the last year or so of not wearing them so much I have become increasingly aware that I subconsciously clench my teeth and cause my tmj, left side, to click, which then causes aching. I try not to do it but then I realise I am doing it again.
I have now found that if I wear the plate, it acts like a bite plate with the bottom front teeth biting against it, I cannot make my tmj click. Much better and no joint aching.
So, I am now finding that I NEED to wear it. This is interesting because, of course, the novelty could wear off, and I dont want that !
I can speak equally well with or without the plate and I am fairly certain no one knows I am wearing it. I can eat with or without it. I usually keep it in to eat but If I am on my own I sometimes take it out and forget to put it back in, but then I become aware that I have started clenching my teeth and clicking the joint again and I HAVE to put it back in.
Its like wearing it for real.....In fact it IS wearing it for real....Which is what I wanted in the first place, or at least I did at the time !
I still have not got around to getting a new plate from the Braces Shop, this time with a tooth to fill the space, but I am feeling that I must do that now to prevent further trouble with the joint. I am just hoping that if I really have to wear it, I won't get to dislike it.
its a dilemma !
I am wondering what others think...Can you have too much of a good thing ?
