Fake appliances with fixed retainer wire

Hi all!

I've been a guest on this forum for a long time but I finally think I'm ready to get my own set of fake appliances.

However I have a fixed retainer wire on the back of my four upper front teeth from an earlier period of wearing braces.

I still have the Hawley retainer which of course doesn't fit anymore since they applied the fixed wire so I'm pondering if I should get it removed during next dentist appointment. It'd prevent from calculus building up between the wire and my front teeth every time and I'd get to wear my retainer again!

If not, will I be able to get impressions and an appliance like f.e. twin blocks or activators when the wire is still on the back of my four front teeth? Won't the twin block/activator get stuck between the wire and my gums?

Hi,

Great to hear you’re considering getting your own appliance!

A fixed retainer wire is not an issue for any of the appliances you mentioned, including fake braces, twin blocks, or activators. You do not need to have it removed in order to proceed.

When you take your dental impressions, the retainer wire will be captured as part of the impression. During the fabrication process, our technicians take this into account and shape the appliance accordingly so it fits comfortably over and around it.

Because of this, there is no risk of the appliance getting stuck between the wire and your gums when it is made from accurate impressions.

Please also keep in mind that all of our appliances are custom-made based on your individual impressions to ensure a precise fit.

Regarding whether you should remove the fixed retainer for hygiene or personal reasons, that would be a decision best discussed with your dentist or orthodontist.
