Is the tpa uncomfortable? What kind of elastics do you have?

Last week, I got my upper expander out. My orthodontist placed a new upper tongue crib and this one feels like it hangs down lower and is more uncomfortable. He activated my herbst to bring my lower jaw forward more. Again, it's hard for my teeth to touch. He also attached some wires to my braces for hooks and started me on elastics. I have to wear two triangles on each side and one on a box in the front. They are tight and it's hard to open my mouth. I got a lower lip bumper to help with crowding on my lower teeth. But worst of all, he fit me with headgear. It has a harness that goes around the top and back of my head and a strip on the sides that the facebow attaches too. I feel a lot of pressure when it's attached. My orthodontist said it's supposed to pull in my overbite and keep my back molars in place. I'm supposed to wear it at least 16 hours a day, more if I can.

I went back to the surgeon last week and I am scheduled to get my chin implant this week. We had discussed jaw surgery at the beginning, but the herbst is moving my jaw forward. He noted that I have more of a jawline with the herbst and my treatment, just no chin. He wanted to do the implant while I was still in the herbst and braces so they could be adjusted more if need be. He said that giving me a chin would accentuate my jawline more. It will be a procedure where I should be able to go home that day.

Interesting. Yes, I had a jones-jig and nance appliance before upper and lower ceramic braces

Yeah it was pretty rough, not being able to talk and eat but I wish I could feel it again as I don't remember it well. The forsus is pretty weird. It moves around a bunch and I can bite down on it, I actually broke one of the the brackets when eating by accident. Did you have anything?

@braces4ever Wow, your first treatment sounds pretty intense. I'm sure it was hell at the time but looking back it sounds pretty good! How's the forsus feel? Do you have pics to share?

I've had braces twice, currently trying to fix my bad bite and it does hurt and your gums will get stronger and your mouth should not get too cut up after a while, try getting some rinsinol packets, they can help a lot.

My bite blocks are too small to make much of a difference. I kind of want to make an excuse to the orthodontist to make them bigger but can't think of anything good.

I started out my treatment over 6 years ago when the orthodontist placed a blue bonded expander on my upper arch. (A bonded expander means it fully covers your molars). I also had a lingual holding arch that had tiny springs to push out and make room for my erupting baby teeth in my lower jaw. Those tiny springs hurt like heck and I eventually got them removed after they broke off a bunch of times. I got four brackets on my upper front teeth and they helped a lot. After about 2 years in those appliances, they were all removed and I had an upper Hawley retainer that also broke many times before I stopped using it. (I used to put it in and out with my tongue hundreds of times before it came loose. Looking back now I miss the feeling of the expander and the small lisp it gave me.
Fast forward two years after I stopped wearing the retainer, I got full braces this time to fix my bite and minor imperfections in straightening them. After two appointments, I got the FORSUS Appliance to fix my bad overbite and crossbite. They are very unnoticeable and I am able to smile, talk, and eat without them showing. In fact nobody but my doctor, family, and orthodontist know I even have them which helps in social situations. I currently have about a year of treatment left and I am glad to have at least some appliances other than just braces but I always wished I had something more.

You might just even need some elastics and hooks. Depending on the bite though you could need somethings else like a functional appliance (Forsus, Herbst, etc.). Talk to an orthodontist though, they will know best.

To be honest with you 'stinkfut', talk with your wife and kids even though I dont have kids and have never been married with exception of a very long term beautiful relationship with an ex girlfriend who dealt with me having to get full metal ones for an extensive jaw surgery, but im sure she will most likely be okay with it as the kiddos most likely will and if so definately get the full metal ones. I say this because during certain moments while having them they will bug you ovcasionally but there are those other moments which make up for the prodominant time of /y'ct hr treatment where you will enjoy them VERY VERY much and these moments I am pretty sure your wife will highly enjoy whether or not you exploit your affinity you have for braces toward her or not. You wont regret getting full metal I guess is what I am saying!!!

So I'm late to this thread but I'm faced with this same decision.  I'm 42 and landed myself a new job with excellent health coverage that covers most of the cost of braces.

As a kid I had braces, headgear and tongue crib, and I hated it.  When it was over I didn't wear my retainers like I should have and now my teeth have slid halfway back.  Now when I bite my front four teeth touch before my molars do.  And it's continuing to push my top front teeth back forward.  My lower canines are especially pushed forward and crowded.  I have some consult appointments next week to at least get fitted for new retainers to stop more movement.  But I'm also seriously considering full braces again.  I've secretly wanted them for the longest time and couldn't afford them until now.  Like OP my concerns are social.  My wife and kids don't even know I'm thinking about braces again, I can't imagine how they will react.  And my new job requires me to speak regularly.  At first I was thinking Invisalign, or metal on the bottom and ceramic on top like OP.  Radian now that you've had them for 6 months, what are your thoughts?  Ceramic doesn't seem much different than metal.  When I see clear braces on someone I'm never fooled.  I'm leaning toward full metal, especially after reading this thread.

@ Braces-Fan
Gratulation for your hardihood and endurance to beginn the treatment.
The photos looks fine.

How long is probable your treatment?

I'm envious, that i dosn't have braces, too.

Hey zusammen.

Will mich weder lächerlich machen, noch mir was "überflüssiges" verkaufen lassen.

Bin gespannt eure Nachrichten/Meinungen zu lesen.
