I had upper and lower expanders when I first started ortho treatment. Transitioned to headgear which I was non compliant with and switched to a Herbert. Upper and lower brackets. All this over about 5 years

How does it feel to have a Herbst inside your mouth?

Indeed blue is a nice colour.

This applies to appliances, retainers, braces ligatures, elastics, and headgear neck- or head- pads

IMHO

The last appointment went exactly as expected. The bottom incisors were pretty much perfect. The right central incisor is slightly tipped inwards, but less than 1/10th of a mm. The ortho said that she'll be able to push that teeth forward while the retainer is bonded to fix this (which didn't work that well, but I'm satisfied with the result and honestly think that these slight imperfections make it look more natural).
The bend that was added to the wire through the brackets didn't upright the 36 as hoped, at least not during one week. As the holding clasps of the removable brace had created a little space between my 35 and 36, the ortho removed the wire from the three brackets and wants to let my bite settle on its own again. Until the next appointment two weeks later I shall not wear my removable braces (well, the lower one won't fit anyway with the permanent retainer).

I had impressions made and the ortho started bending the retainer wire. About 20 minutes later they started bonding the permanent retainer from canine to canine. After instructions on how to brush and floss I was on my way.

I have to admit that the permanent retainer isn't nearly as bad as I expected. While on the first day my tongue chafed the wire, already on day three I started to forget it was there. I expected it to be way more present and even interfere with speech a little. I didn't observe any of that. I can definitely see how so many people prefer it over a removable retainer which you need to always remember to wear.
However, lots of food seems to get stuck between the wire and teeth. On several occasions something got stuck in a way that I was only able to remove it once I was home with floss. Considering that the primary goal of the treatment was to close the two gaps behind my upper canines where food got stuck every meal, instead, now I have five new places where food cat get stuck.
For now I'll be able to tolerate the bonded retainer for a year or so until the end of the treatment as it will make fixing my bite easier than trying to work around removable plates which are responsible for my molars' intrusion in the first place. When active treatment is over I still think I'd prefer to have the fixed retainer removed and rather use a removable appliance.

When the retainer was bonded, there was about a millimeter of horizontal space between the upper and lower incisors. When I asked the ortho about it she said that the incisors don't necessarily need to touch when I bite together. If it's something that bothers me we can tackle it later.
Luckily, only a few days later the problem fixed itself as my upper incisors have moved inwards on their own and are now perfectly touching the lower ones again.

Without wearing any removable plates, the first three days all of my molars were quite sensitive as the bite started settling. The gap between 35 and 36 is closed again and the 36 was able to extrude a bit. But there's still a vertical gap of ~1mm. The vertical space between the left premolars didn't change and is still about half a millimeter. Let's see what the next appointment brings.

If your bite permits, you might also get a bonded retainer on your top 6 front teeth.
The initial plan of the ortho was to do retention with both a lower and upper fixed retainer. The top one might even include the first premolars to keep the gap behind my canines closed.

Perhaps you could ask for a bottom hawley as well in order to keep the whole bottom arch aligned? [...] Again, a hawley in addition would help maintain the whole upper arch and the hawleys in combination should maintain your bite.
I'll need some form of bruxism guard anyway again after the active treatment phase. Already after half a year without grinding protection (since the bite planes were removed from my removable braces) my dentist noticed that the bruxism marks on my teeth got worse. This was also how I plan(ned) on convincing the ortho to just use removable retainers. If I need to wear a bruxism guard diligently every night for the foreseeable future anyway, why not use it as retainer and add a second plate for the other jaw as well.

Had the appointment to get my moulds and photos done and all systems go now. Have my appointment to get the braces fitted on the 10th Aug assuming the appliances arrive in time, if not might be a wait as the ortho is on holiday for a couple of weeks after that.

My new dentist is happy to do what I asked for so I’m going in for moulds on Tuesday. Upper schwartz with occlusal and Hawley wire and lower schwartz with Hawley. She was so nice and understood why I was asking for it. Made me feel so at ease. The appliance my last ortho gave me didn’t sit right and I can’t wear it so it’s not going to work to stop me biting my nails and she won’t do the schwartz so I went to this new ortho. I’m convinced making a schwartz with both top and bottom they will make it better fitting and I can actually wear it!! My ortho seems to get it and completely understood why I was asking for this. Slightly nervous for Tuesday though!

Hallo zusammen,

Was könnte dies sein?:D

I'm sure your orthodontist knows what they are doing. Don't over think it. Good luck with your treatment.

He is a very good orthodontist. I am curious to hear him explain how those teeth will be tilted, because what I see when looking at the brackets looks like it will tilt them the wrong way.

My retainer with occlusal coverage doesn’t sit right and my bit is more open than it needs to be. As my dentist won’t go with my idea of asking the lab to make a schwartz brace top and bottom with occlusal on the top I’ve decided to go to another ortho to see if they will do it. My appointment is today. The reason I think this will work better is they will make both appliances together and hopefully take more care than when just making the retainer. I might be wrong, in which case it’s a waste of money but if I’m right it will really help as I’m not wearing the retainer because its so uncomfortable

As of yesterday morning, I had not heard back from my orthodontist's office regarding my email. Looking some at my teeth some the day before, I think my left central incisor isn't tilting back, but has shifted back a little, making the shape of my upper arch a little lop-sided (I can feel with my tongue that the right incisors are a little further out than the left incisors). My guess is this happened because my left lateral incisor was behind the other teeth, and so as it has moved forward some, it has pulled the teeth (mostly the central incisor) next to it back some.

Because of noticing this, yesterday I emailed my treatment coordinator again to say that I think I had incorrectly jumped to the conclusion that the tooth was tilting back. I mentioned that I still am not sure if the brackets on my incisors are the correct ones.

In that email, I also included that I have noticed that where the assistant bent back the archwire when I got my braces on, the ends of the wire are now touching my teeth, rubbing when the archwire is bumped or wiggled. (She bent the ends at basically a right angle, so the end points in between the last tooth with a bracket, the first bicuspid, and the tooth behind it, the second bicuspid; now that end is touching the tooth with the last bracket.)

Later yesterday, the treatment coordinator emailed me back to say that the wire will not damage the tooth but if it's poking gums or cheeks, I can come it for them to trim it. Otherwise, it'll get taken care of my appointment in a month.

A little later the same day, she emailed me again. She noticed that she had written a response to my email from last Thursday, but had forgot to actually send it, so she sent it to me. According to that, the ortho says the correct brackets are on my teeth. She said I will not notice tilting yet because the first wire is a round wire. That kind of change will happen once I've graduated through wires. She said they can talk about it in detail with me at my appointment.

I still think the wrong torque brackets are on my incisors, but I can ask the ortho for info about that at my appointment. And I suspected the first round wire couldn't really do the tilting, but given that my bite had changed, I wanted to bring it up (when I bite down right now, my lower incisors hit my left central incisor first, and I have to pull my lower jaw a little further back than normal to bite down on my back teeth).

I didn't bring this up in my emails, though may at my appointment if the torque of the brackets is actually correct, but I think the bracket on my left central incisor is actually twisted/bent just a little bit. The face of the bracket isn't quite square to the base that is glued to my tooth. Also, since I got my braces on, feeling around on them, I noticed that the under-tie-area of that bracket isn't as deep as any of the other brackets. Any other bracket I can fit my thumbnail in there with a little play, but on that bracket I can't quite fit my thumbnail.

Looking forward to moving up a wire size, one so that I get to see more movement, and two this first wire is so thin it almost feels sharp to my tongue, but also my lips basically don't feel it. It almost feels like just brackets with no wire. I'm guessing it'll be a little more comfortable on my lips and cheeks with a thicker wire.

Oh and for power chains I choose blue as well. They were a lighter shade of blue than the brackets, but were also nice
