My New Treatment

very good pictures!
Is it MARPE without surgical splitting? Does the turning the srew hurt, and how often do you have do turn the screw?
How is it with speech, did you get accustomed yet?

Congrats! Must be a weird feeling, seeing this shiny metal device on the plaster model, knowing it will be inserted in your mouth soon. Cemented on your molars and screwed in your bones.
How was it then, and how is living with it now?
And, last but not least, if I see your models and your installed device, I don’t really see a reason for this - except a big wish  ;)

Yes. Turning the screw hurts a little but it's not so bad. My speech has been hardly affected at all - it's very high up in my palate and doesn't obstruct much at all

It feels great so far, and yes, I don't have a severe need for it, much more of a want :)

In my case the wish was also bigger then the need, but the need was still there so I finally got my dream of shiny brackets fulfilled.
But at the end I‘m sure the dream of an expander, screwed in, would have been one number too big to come true.
How did you find someone who did it for you?

Painless, but it hurt a little after

I find it so fascinating! Were you scared as they screwed it in? I would be terrified!

If it is more want than need, how did you find an ortho willing to do the treatment? Genuinely curious

There's no magic secret or anything, I just went on Google, looked for orthodontists that offered it and booked an appointment. I actually booked two appointments with two different orthos and the first said he'd do it so I never went to the second. I said that I snore and that I mouth-breathe at night, both of which are true, and that I wanted to get the appliance in the hope of fixing it. He said that he doubts that the problem causing my snoring is anything to do with the width of my palate, that he can make no guarantees of it working, but if I want to do it, I can. It cost vastly more than having just braces and I think he expected me to say no, but I didn't. That's it, really

How are you now, with that superspecial device in yor mouth?
Did you already adapt to it, or is there any pai or lisp? How‘s eating with it?
Can’t imagine how much I would lova to make the same experience.
Will you get your Brackets only on top, or also on your bottom teeth?

Thats really interesting, im kind of surprised how some orthos have that attitude when a lot of the other posts on here make out that the are really reluctant to so treatment unless its totally necessary! Good on you for finding the right one though and enjoying it at the same time as getting genuine treatment, i hope it improves your quality of breathing etc.
I snore (annoys my wife a lot!) and would say I have mild congestion issues with nose breathing but I’m not a classic mouth breather while awake. I did an online consultation for smilewhite out of curiosity a while ago and the consultant mentioned that a plan would include an effort to ‘widen my smile and palate’ but she said they obviously only do it with aligners, not appliances. I’d be really interested to discuss it with a ‘real’ orthodontist in person though to see if I would benefit from a fixed appliance like yours! Anyway sorry off topic!

I'm thoroughly enjoying it. It is sometimes painful but less so than you would expect. The effect on my speech has been minimal. I'll be getting braces on both jaws

I wonder how many of the people that say an orthodontist said no actually asked. You see people saying "I wanted headgear but no orthodontist will do it for me," but that doesn't explicitly say that they asked, it could quite easily just be an assumption. It's only the times when the orthodontist says "yes" that there is any evidence that they were asked - my mouth is filled with said evidence. I think if you're showing that you have thought about it and have a sound explanation, even if it's misguided, then they'll consider your request

Thats a really interesting response, I am sure you are right! I’d like to think that some day I could find the courage to at the very least go for an in-person consultation…!

And sorry didn’t mean to hijack your thread! How is it all going? Do the screws bother you at all? Do many people ask to see it?

It's a forum for discussion, I wouldn't consider it hijacking. None of it really bothers me at all, it's basically painless most of the time now. The only painful moments recently have come from hitting one of the screws with water when using a water flosser - they don't feel like they're particularly high-pressure until you hit the wrong spot!

I did it once and she almost called me crazy lol

Noted that the tubes are for your archwire. Have you got your brackets and archwires yet? Will your brackets be metal or clear?

How often do you have to turn your expansion screw and do you know how many turns you will do in total?

If your new appliance expands your upper arch significantly, how is your ortho going to ensure it still fits together with your lower arch?

From your photos it appears that you have lovely teeth.
