getting Braces at 40

Hello everybody!

I'm going to get brackets soon, since my teeth don't meet on one side, which gives me some strong headaces. To safe money and because I don't really belive you can hide bracets, I have decided to get normal metall brackets.
I've got horrible nervs for waiting, so I'm waiting for the day I will get the braces on with a mounting sense of panik. The day, however, is not yet known. I guess some here can understand my antizipation, my family, however, momentarily is getting a bit upset at me.
Most of all I'm brooding about how my wider family and frinds etc. will accept me in Braces.

fully understand the fact of annoying people in your environment!
Really few, close people know of my treatment, so they have to listen to all my worries, which are, to be honest, sometimes a bit ridiculous. But I've never had any treatment so everything's really new to me and I feel the need to talk about it since it makes me feel more secure to know what's gonna happen.

That's why I also joined this forum- people here just understand your problems

god I certainly hope I don't have to get braces a second time at 40, but given that this is your first time, all the luck to you. It really does feel great when you know you're getting things sorted.

once they're on, it takes a couple months for you to stop being like 'oh my god I have braces' and then it'll all be fine.
 
thank you for the reinsurance, right now I need it, desperatly. Just now I was panicking. It took some concentrating to get back to doing my job.
Still, I know I'm doing the right thing, whatever the sideeffects might be.

What makes you feel nervous?
The social aspect or the pain/discomfort it might cause?
 
The social thing, mainly. As a child I was an outsider of some sort. I remember what some kids in braces had to endure, having seen that from the sideline.
I'm not, I never was, someone with loads of selfesteem, and eveyone around me, nowadays, tends to enjoy a rather sharp whit. As do I, most of the time, but I'm not entirely sure how I will cope with those whitty remarks I'm going to get.

In addition I wonder how it feels like when the brackets are in. I do not fear a bit of pain, since the reason for my treatment are haedaches almost every day. I presume I can handle any pain the braces may inflict. But it is a big change, for examplte in how my mouth will feel like and how my reflection looks back at me when I'm shaving, and that makes me nervous.
 
yeah, I feel the same about it...

But as you said, it's necessary and unavoidable. The headaches won't disappear, always Keep that in mind:)

 
I do, now they are in, this thought helps me going on.

Actually the social thing hasen't hit jet. Most people look at my braces, wondering for a moment before cottening on. They normally don't even mention them and ignore them soon enough.

The feeling of the braces isn't really nice, not as bad ,though, as I had expected.
 
I just had mine removed recently. I had mine put on 2 days before I turned 50 even though I had 2 years of headgear wear, 7 months of a tongue crib, and almost 3.5 years on braces I will never regret it. ;D ;D
 
hope all goes well getting your braces on!  I'm 43 and getting braces in a few month.  Nervous as well since getting metal on top and bottom for 22 - 24 months total, but looking forward to correcting problems finally.

Same here. I'm having a bonded hyrax palatal expander in my upper jaw for posterior crossbite and front crowding. I will be having it for 6 months with a turn each week. After that I'll get a tpa in my upper jaw and fixed braces in both my upper and lower jaw combined with elastics. The whole procedure will take about 3 years and I'm 41. This is my second time in braces. The first time I was eleven and I had a severe over jet. They fixed that with metal braces in both my upper and lower jaw and a cervical headgear wich I had to wear for 18 ours a day.... Which off course I didn't because I was to embarrassed to wear it in public at that time. After that a had to wear a loose retainer for both my upper and lower jaw. I didn't get a wire glued to the back of my theet. Right now I'm dissapointed in myself for not being consequent in wearing my braces as I was younger although that orthodontic didn't do anything about the widenest of my upper jaw. Nevertheless now I decided to get the bonded hyrax to stay consequent to get the best result. Hang in there! Du schaffst Das schon :)
