A surgeon needs a good "reference" when they are messing around with someone's face.... they have obviously spent a long time working out what needs to be done to the patient's face, this is just a tool to make sure that everything ends up in the right place, and straight.

I'm just surprised they can't use a projected laser grid and a pen!

Lasers and pen are great for 2 dimensions, Jaw surgery is 3 dimensions.....
