I had a bonded expander for 9 months and it was extremely hard to eat and talk for the first three weeks.
-
Same here!
-
I had a removable bite plate. I had it for about 6 to 9 months, I don't remember exactly.
-
I had a Nance appliance for half a year
-
I had a jones jig and nance appliance for almost a year and then braces
-
Headgear, elastics, lip bumper, 5 years. But it would not have been 5 years if I actually wore the headgear.
then 5 surgeries, having my jaw wired shut once for 6 weeks.
-
I had a twin block appliance for a year, and had to wear it full time (although I must confess I didn't wear it for meals that often). Despite this I liked the appliance.
-
Not sure how "crazy" it is but I wore two zig-zag finishing elastics for about the last 6 months of treatment. With each hooked on 7 brackets it was very tight and almost like my jaw was wired shut.
-
I wouldn't say crazy, but I was only informed I was getting headgear as my orthodontist got the mouthpiece and headstraps out. I walked out of that office in headgear into a full waiting room, a truly frightening experience.
-
Headgear for two years and a tonguecrib for seven months.

sounds like an interesting experience, tell us more! there's a story in there somewhere!

herbst appliance ;D

I wore an expander for 7 months when I was 12... back then I didn't really enjoy it of course but now I'd love to get one lmao!
-
Had to wear an activator, including expansion screw and high-pull headgear for about two years - pretty much full-time for the first year at least.
Had to continue to use the headgear when I got fixed braces.
Maybe not particularly crazy, but really hated it at the time. The Herbst afterwards was a breeze compared to that ::)
-
I had a Sagittal removable brace. Basically a big removable expander for 12 months.
-
Eek i had a mouthful! A bonded expander with 8 fully banded teeth, then elastics and finally a headgear!
I had my expander for the duration of the treatment and hated it, it was way too bulky and gave me a lisp which i was quite shy about, however i loved my headgear and wore it for a full 2 years all the time even to school!
-
I recently got a twin block that has an upper tongue crib.
-
I had a palate expander and headgear with braces. I refused to wear the headgear so the solution was herbst.
-
At one time I had an fixed upper expander with springs pushing on the back of my front teeth, the expander was connected to a reverse pull headgear, the style that outline your face and lower metal braces. I was a terrible patient

I got a tongue crib about 6 months ago. It is the biggest most intrusive I have seen. It long almost touching my jaw when I close my mouth and not only ont he front as it us usual but all the way around from band to band. When I close my mouth u cannot touch any teeth with my tongue. I will have at least a year but most likely the full treatment about 3 years with the tongue crib and 2.5 with braces. My ortho won't even talk about getting it off for a year and she will evaluate, but she is adamant and everytime we talk she says she wants it for the duration. We will see, for I have made the decision to at least have all this year, it makes it easier for me to eventually maybe accept to have it for the duration. It is extremely uncomfortable but I got used to it in about 2 months. After dreading and avoiding it for years once I got it it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and now seeing the results just removing the constant pressure from the tongue as well as the reminder to put it where it should I am so happy to finally have done it.

Headgear: 2 years

How does it feel to have a Herbst inside your mouth?
-
I had upper and lower expanders when I first started ortho treatment. Transitioned to headgear which I was non compliant with and switched to a Herbert. Upper and lower brackets. All this over about 5 years
-
@bracedup Wow, at the time that was probably torture. Sounds like a cool treatment now!

Gosh, I have never seen such a extended tongue crib!!!
How did it affect your speech?
-
In second grade I had an upper bonded expander for about six months.
-
I had tongue tamers for my tongue thrust on 2 top and 2 bottom teeth for a few months. They were irritating the first week when I spoke. They gave me a mild lisp that was a bit frustrating, but in the end did not help my tongue thrust as my tongue just pushed between them. I have a picture but don’t know how to post it.tonguetamers.png

Hi. You can insert a Pic in the "Post Reply"Window. There is a button with a miroscaled Mona Lisa. That is for inserting Pictures while doing a Reply post.

I haven't gotten braces yet but getting them. I just got headgear 3 weeks ago and have to wear it all the time I cannot take it off because it's attached to my molar bands. I have an overbite and misaligned jaws and soft bone tissue disorder which is apparently why I have to wear the headgear all the time. It was explained to me that the headgear pulls my upper jaw back and holds it in place until it will stay in the right position if I take it off my jaw will shift back to where it was. I have to wear this for 9-12 months.

I think this fits in the fantasy section :P
-
no its no fantasy.

Can we have pictures then? My issue with this is how do you have wired in headgear but no braces? It just doesn’t work like that.

Certainly for kids, it's quite common to have just a pair of molar bands along with headgear (and thus no other braces) for initial treatment
-
I have molar bands on like sparky said. I can post a picture if someone tells me how to do it on here.
-
With the current treatment I got bite turbo’s, which were super annoying during the first few months and made me almost regret that I got braces again.
