preparation

anyone got any thoughts on the preparation process for getting braces?
I never did it myself but I imagine that doing impressions is horrible.
The X-rays in the big machine look like fun though :)

For me it took a long time to phone for the first consultation but after I was anxious and excited to go. I arrived they install you in the seat they check your teeth they take pictures they ask for x ray you go in another room take the x-ray you analyse the x-ray with the doctor and after of you are OK you make the molds I think for me the worst part it's very strange. And after you feel to go home with  a lot of question

our kids went through it, but i never saw the prep phase of things. when my wife got her braces, i tagged along and saw everything form the consult to the records appointment, and then getting the braces on. It did seem like a lot of steps, but none of it was painful or hard.  I did the consult and record process myself and ready to get braces on as soon as dentist takes care of a crown situation that flared up.  I enjoyed the appointments - the big x ray machines were nice, the scan of my teeth was pretty cool, though have to admit the molds didn't taste that great.    When I would be in for appointments and see others getting the records appointments or their braces on, they all seemed scared to death.  I've only had a tongue appliance installed and that was not too bad (except for the spacers, which did hurt a bit for a few days), but guessing when i sit in the chair to get the braces put on, I'll be a bit nervous.

The hardest part for me was going through all the steps just to get ready to get the braces put on. Most of it was painless. At the start, my first orthodontist was concerned that I might have a tongue thrust problem, so I had an appliance that I was supposed to wear at night. It was too annoying and I don't think that I ever really wore it. She did have me wait about 6 months just to see if my teeth were stable.

After I moved, I had all my records sent to another orthodontist who took over my (pre)treatment. He took a look at everything, did his own examination, and not long after that had me in braces, metal top and bottom. I had several sets of impressions done. If you just relax and don't allow yourself to get stressed about the impressions, it goes a lot easier. Breathe through your nose instead of your mouth, that way you don't feel like you are gagging and can't breathe. Ask if they have flavored impression material, it does make it more pleasant.

I could hardly wait for the day that I finally got my braces on. They did both top and bottom at the same time and gave me a very flexible wire. I didn't have very much discomfort at all, even when the teeth started to move.

Go into it with a positive attitude and try to enjoy everything that happens. After all, it is "expensive jewelry", just show it off for as long as you have it.

It's fairly easy and painless. I would recommend using chapstick before though!

good advice braceface2015 and carking.  They had told my wife the same thing on the chapstick to help minimize effects of the separators.  i had no issues with the impressions.  a bit uncomfortable but didn't gag.  They did both impressions and a digital scan.
