Changing retainers?
« on: 11. January 2021, 17:27:42 PM »
Ive got an orthodontist appointment tomorrow and my essix retainers are really uncomfortable, something about the feel of them, i want to switch to hawley retainers. Any tips on how to ask my orthodontist?

Hey!
I think you should be honest. If the doctor asks you how you are, then I would tell him about your problems. I think you should have that much confidence to your doctor to talk about that.

Yes Just ask your ortho. They will have no problem with this request. I asked my ortho for a hawley as well as my essix retainer and she was happy to oblige. Of course I had to pay extra for the hawley. I only wear the hawley at night now and much prefer it to the essix. I am sure the hawley would also be fine for daytime wear, albeit a bit more visible. Well done on completing active treatment. Retention is really important so it is essential to have retainers you are happy with.

I had fixed retainers and one broke so I asked to change to removable ones. I asked my dentist for Hawley retainers because, after reading into it, I found that they last longer and are cheaper in the long run and I was less likely to lose or break them as they are more visible. My dentist was fine with that and understood my reasoning so was happy to do that. One quick mould appointment and then a 15 minute visit to have them fitted and that was it. Very simple and easy. I’ve had them for about 6/7 months now and while they were a bit hard to get used to at first they feel fine now. Hardly noticeable and pretty comfortable. I hadn’t had the fixed ones for long so my dentist advised me to wear them full time for a few months which was a struggle but now just nighttime only and your situation is prob different.  I would just say the same thing to your dentist if you prefer Hawley's to Essix. It is each to their own. You dentist might not offer those types though but just ask and they can advise. They are cheaper and stronger.

I also had essix retainers first - but had always wanted hawleys. I ended up just finding a new ortho (different town, closer to me than the one that did my braces) when my essix retainers were getting worn out. New ortho offered both, and left the choice of type to me - so now I've got upper/lower hawleys!
