I personally find this hypothesis more compelling (palatable?) than any based in genetics, with the possible exception of gene expression -- which approaches this idea again.

A related idea that occurs to me is the possible role of the mouth microbiome (all the microbes that inhabit the oral cavity) in stimulating bone growth.  Our diet, obsession with killing 99.9% of all known germs, and use of antibiotics (I'm not advocating against these -- they can and do save lives) must have changed the typical mouth microbiome dramatically.  Is anyone aware of any research that relates to this in the context of malocclusion specifically rather than dental health more generally?
