I had a retainer and a bionator for over 2 or 3 years.

Had them for ages when I was a kid – plus 5 years of the “ages” with a cervical headgear.  (add in a few jaw ops for good measure, all which ended when I was 26, thank goodness!)

Now I only have a retainer, but managed to convince my ortho to give me a headgear as a “joke” – that sure freaked out my girlfriend.

I had braces for several years. At the age of 8 or 9, I got some removable braces, like activators and bionators. At the age of 12 i got my fixed braces (Metallbrackets) with headgear for three years. After that, I had to wear a retainer (removable) for a few years.

Now I only wear braces for fun.

I had removable braces first, then fixed braces + headgear. After about two years I got a retainer for a few years. Now I have to wear a retainer again because of my wisdom theeth.

Wanted to have removables for more years than I can remember and got hawley retainers about six years ago.  I really like them and have worn top one ever since.
It feels normal to have it in now and I keep it in for eating as well cos I like the feel of the plastic covering my mouth. Dont feel right without it.

I just got 2 new pairs of retainers... one pair of "hawleys" with pink plastic, and one pair of "essix" clear-plastic retainers.

Of course, those of you who know me will know that I don't actually NEED them, they are "just for fun"!

Nobody "needs" braces. They're entirely elective. Not all patients have severe cases, many are for minor things. Have the orthodontist address these minor issues.

Can't believe I never posted in this inquiry. I got my braces when I was 50 years old, A lifetime quest, Had all teeth bracketed, molars banded and even had a bridge split to correct bite, Wore headgear for a year, tried to get a combi, had elastics. Time went by fast for the 3 years. Have Hawley retainers that I wear occasionally after 10 years, Great experience when you have a good orthodontist

1970 - 1975 age 14 -18, full bands with full headgear and strict parents.  It was not pretty.

I beg to differ with you that Nobody needs braces. Failing to achieve a good occlusion (bite) causes premature tooth loss and jaw problems later in life, as well as self-concept problems. Malocclusion (needing braces) IS a health issue, but sadly in the US and many other countries is is considered to be 'elective' or 'cosmetic'

I wore fixed braces as a teen, back in the the 'Bad Old Days' of full bands, the real 'metal mouth look' of the late 60's. Spent a summer in nearly full time high pull HG wear (parents threatening a slow, painful death if I was seen out of it without permission), several months with elastics and a couple months in a horrible bite plate that almost filled my mouth and pushed my lower teeth forward (all but impossible to talk with it in, the were actually so 'kind' to schedule it during summer vacation so it didnt interfere with school). When I was 16 pr 17 I finally graduated to retainers, actually right when lingual 3 x 3 lower retainers were introduced - just my lower cuspids banded, and a wire running between them behind my teeth - removable on top, I would guess a hawley. After a few months graduated to night only year on top, and the bottom removed when I was 20.

Erm, respectfully disagree.  This is an argument put forward by most health insurance agencies to prevent paying up.
The problems of malocclusion are plentiful, not just for cosmetic purposes.  Braces, quite literally, saved my life.  No, not everyone is as extreme as I was, but at the end of the day, good dentition leads to better overall health.

And oh, let us not forget the often overlooked link between bad occlusion and headaches.  I have personal experience of cluster headaches being "cured" by aligning teeth correctly.
