Title: Who here has actually had braces themselves?
Post by: Pumpkinhead on 28. November 2003, 14:59:37 PM
Everyone that uses this forum obviously has an interest in braces, but I wanna know who here has actually had braces themselves at any point in their lives?

I never have, but I do need them however... I just can't afford it...

I wore full braces for 3 years and have been VERY lucky to date 3 girls who were wearing braces. One of them only had top braces when I was dating her unfortunately, and none of them wore headgear or a facemask

I will have braces as soon as I take my decision (I must have surgery and I don't like this).

I'd need surgery too if I decided to get braces, because my jaw is slightly crooked... That's really what I'm afraid of... not the cost :?

I had braces (full bands -- early 1980's) and headgear.  Before the braces and headgear I had an expander for a few months.

A couple of different retainers to start with. Then fixed braces for three years, most of the time with different elastics and for a time rubber chain things (along the wires), then removable retainers (top and bottom) for ages afterwards - which I still need to wear at least twice a week at night. I've had new ones from time to time (we're talking seven years of wearing). But I like my retainers in a private sort of way - they feel comforting when I put them in, and they've kept my teeth nice and straight. I guess that's one of the reasons why I like to see other girls wearing them too (as well as fixed braces).

I have them.  I can't wait to get them off.  People say that they are so cute, bu I hate them.  I hope to God i get them off soon.  I don't understand why anyone would want to get them if they don't need them.   :(

wow that adds to the whole thing. i need surgery as well and am the most scared i have ever been. mostly cause im so damn curious that i have surfed every website possible on maxilofacial surgeries and fell on some way-too-graphic pictures...hehehe. but i cant get braces only, its braces and surgery or nothing.
my teeh are very straight, its my bite thats awefull.
But hey! if it gives me the chance to have braces i'll take it...hehehe
they are coming on in excatly 30days. my orthodontist has never met smeone so excited about getting braces. he didnt even propose me the metal ones, i had to make him change the plan cause i want them shiny after all.
in 30days...for 3 years...plus surgery...and then the whole retainer phase of course...
im am creating a website as we speak, to document my treatment and to cater to orthodontal braces fetishism. it's going to be a blast.

I have braces right now! I've had them since last summer and am not sure how much longer I need them. I had them as a kid - from age 11-13 and my teeth were perfect for 10 years. Then I developed really crooked teeth and an open bite. I couldn't believe it! I am hoping my braces this time (and wearing a retainer for several years afterwards) will keep my teeth straight for the rest of my life! Oh and I have silver braces and I love putting on different colored rubberbands each month! I feel so young again :) Jen

i have braces. i had a saggital appliance for 7 months, then fixed headgear (face mask) for 5 months. now i have my brackets on top and bottom, and i just got elastics and a power chain a few weeks ago. i've had brackets for 6 months now, and i have about another 2 years to go. my bite's not fixed yet, so my orthodntist suggested more headgear so we'll see how it goes.

when thats over, retainers for ages!

I had fixed metal brackets & elastics for 25 months in the late 70's (1978 - 1980).  I was bummed - I was expecting to get full bands (they was the most popular at the time!)

I had a retainer for well over a year (didn't wear it enough..), was meant to then get fixed braces but was nearly 18 by then (this was a couple of years ago) and chickened out. I still need them (and want them), but unfortunately at the end of the day I'm too worried about what people would think of me if I got them now, and getting clear ones spoils the best part about them! Maybe when I'm older.. but god dammit I wish I'd had them when I was younger!

I had an activator retainer, the kind that fixes upper and lower jaw at the same time, for nearly 6 years. At the time, mid eighties, I didn't like it much, mostly due to the speech encumbrance at school, but I still have the thingy in my closet and I appreciate it now more than ever.

I wore braces myself for a couple of years, clear brackets top and metal brackets lower. I also wore headgear for a time, but rarely in public (which was relatively common where and when I grew up), and elastics for half a year or so. Wouldn't have them again, though...

Had them for ages when I was a kid – plus 5 years of the “ages” with a cervical headgear.  (add in a few jaw ops for good measure, all which ended when I was 26, thank goodness!)

Now I only have a retainer, but managed to convince my ortho to give me a headgear as a “joke” – that sure freaked out my girlfriend.

I had braces for several years. At the age of 8 or 9, I got some removable braces, like activators and bionators. At the age of 12 i got my fixed braces (Metallbrackets) with headgear for three years. After that, I had to wear a retainer (removable) for a few years.

Now I only wear braces for fun.

Wanted to have removables for more years than I can remember and got hawley retainers about six years ago.  I really like them and have worn top one ever since.
It feels normal to have it in now and I keep it in for eating as well cos I like the feel of the plastic covering my mouth. Dont feel right without it.

Nobody "needs" braces. They're entirely elective. Not all patients have severe cases, many are for minor things. Have the orthodontist address these minor issues.

Can't believe I never posted in this inquiry. I got my braces when I was 50 years old, A lifetime quest, Had all teeth bracketed, molars banded and even had a bridge split to correct bite, Wore headgear for a year, tried to get a combi, had elastics. Time went by fast for the 3 years. Have Hawley retainers that I wear occasionally after 10 years, Great experience when you have a good orthodontist

I beg to differ with you that Nobody needs braces. Failing to achieve a good occlusion (bite) causes premature tooth loss and jaw problems later in life, as well as self-concept problems. Malocclusion (needing braces) IS a health issue, but sadly in the US and many other countries is is considered to be 'elective' or 'cosmetic'

I wore fixed braces as a teen, back in the the 'Bad Old Days' of full bands, the real 'metal mouth look' of the late 60's. Spent a summer in nearly full time high pull HG wear (parents threatening a slow, painful death if I was seen out of it without permission), several months with elastics and a couple months in a horrible bite plate that almost filled my mouth and pushed my lower teeth forward (all but impossible to talk with it in, the were actually so 'kind' to schedule it during summer vacation so it didnt interfere with school). When I was 16 pr 17 I finally graduated to retainers, actually right when lingual 3 x 3 lower retainers were introduced - just my lower cuspids banded, and a wire running between them behind my teeth - removable on top, I would guess a hawley. After a few months graduated to night only year on top, and the bottom removed when I was 20.

Nobody "needs" braces. They're entirely elective.

Erm, respectfully disagree.  This is an argument put forward by most health insurance agencies to prevent paying up.
The problems of malocclusion are plentiful, not just for cosmetic purposes.  Braces, quite literally, saved my life.  No, not everyone is as extreme as I was, but at the end of the day, good dentition leads to better overall health.

And oh, let us not forget the often overlooked link between bad occlusion and headaches.  I have personal experience of cluster headaches (https://dereferer.me/?https://dereferer.me/?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cluster_headache) being "cured" by aligning teeth correctly.

I currently have a mouthguard on my bottom teeth as my dentist thinks that my teeth have become worn due to grinding . I think the wear may be due to my bite being incorrect and a top front incisor closing onto a bottom incisor instead of in front of it. Should I consult an orthodontist?

Fist I had removable applicances, kind of activators. Then I had to wear headgear for about 18 months. Then, after the removal of all four wisdom teeth, I got full bands with headgear until the end of treatment.

Title: Re: Who here has actually had braces themselves?

My braces career started, when I was 7.
My second upper right molar (which was still one of my primary teeth) had to be extracted because of an infection.
The dentist installed me a spacer, which consisted of a molar band and a bent piece of wire. This I was supposed to wear until the second tooth started growing.
About one year later, this thing fell off for the second time, when the dentist said to my parents, that an orthodontic treatment will be necessary anyway, and so he left it off...
Some weeks later, I got my first braces installed. Plastic ones, just on the upper teeth from 1 to 3 on each side.
And molar bands, for my headgear, I head to wear for 12-14 hours a day, with high pull, and cervical strap.
Than, after about two years, the orthodontist took off my braces and I got a bionator to wear for 18 hours a day.
Two or three visits later, my molar bands were still installed, the ortho surprised me with my headgear again, which I head to wear again. With the headgear installed, I was unable to remove my bionator, which gave me some - today I would say - ballgag feeling, which I started to like...
I think, that was the time, my braces-fetish started ;-)
Before my parents always had to tell me - wear your braces!!! - but then I started to wear them automatically whenever possible.
After about one year with my bionator-headgear treatment, I got fixed braces again. Now the full program, uppers and lowers and still my - beloved - headgear. But - what a surprise, with some grinding on my bionator, the orthodontist managed this thing still to fit in my mouth, with all the braces installed.
I didn´t show to anybody, but I loved to wear my "instruments of torture"
The only thing, that I got afraid of, was the facemask, the orthodontist asked me once, if I would wear, which I denied (what was I stupid ;-) So I got elastics to wear instead.

Than, after all, I got the braces off. Happy on the one hand (first girlfriend...) but also a bit sad and missing some part of me.

That would be my favourite part too. I like braces that are limiting in some way or another.

Was your headgear 12-14 hrs/day the whole treatment? Did you just wear it in the evening and and at night? When did you usually wear the bionator?
Title: Re: Who here has actually had braces themselves?
Post by: surfreak on 21. April 2014, 17:18:05 PM
Usually I wore my bionator-headgear-combi just during the night.
But, when my braces-fetish started, I began wearing it whenever I was at home.

Last week, almost 30 years later, I ordered my first fakes. Headgear included, of course!!

I am so full of curiosity and can't wait trying them in for the first time....
Title: Re: Who here has actually had braces themselves?
Post by: andys on 22. April 2014, 02:24:16 AM
The fakes are fun. I never had real braces, so my only experience has been the retainer and headgear I ordered from here, but  they are awesome!

I do wish I could attach the facebow to something fixed, rather than the removable retainer, but oh well...

I just started treatment yesterday and now have both upper and lower metal Damon 3MX braces with molar bands on all four of my first molars. Last week, when I went to get the records done, the ortho said that I can have buccal tubes on the first and second molars but I convinced her to use bands instead. I am a strong chewer and also grind at night so I told her that I was worried about that possibly shearing off the molar brackets and she agreed. So after the records, I left there with 8 metal spacers. They were hoping that there would be enough space in a few days to band both first and second molars but no such luck, so I have round two of metal spacers and I go back on Thursday to get all of my second molars banded. I also have bite turbos on the bottom first molars and will be getting elastics soon. The ortho said I can expect an 18 - 24 month treatment time  :)

6 weeks into 3yrs of fixed metal braces . Got elastics fitted last week which I'm told I will be wearing for most if not all of my treatment. So far I'm really happy ( which I'm so surprised about) that I'm having this done.

I wanted fake braces for 10+ years before I finally bought mine, and they're fantastic. Can't recommend them highly enough.

I had them as a kid. I thought they were super cool, and really fascinating, but I was usually more interested in what was going on around me in the ortho's office than what was in my own mouth. The office was open so I could see all the other patients being worked on at the same time as me, and I remember very vividly there being a big poster on the wall of different colors and patterns that a bionator could be made in. I never got to have a bionator :(

I barely remember what my own braces looked like on me or even what they felt like, except that my mouth was very sore when I got them on and I wore an expander on my top jaw that would leave an impression on my tongue over night. If I ever ran my tongue over my brackets, I don't remember doing it and wish I could remember what it felt like!

My expander was attached with molar bands, and I had four brackets on my front teeth. I am old enough that I remember some of my classmates having bands on all of their lower teeth and brackets on only their top fronts, but I only ever had those four brackets. They were connected with a bare wire to the tubes on my molar bands, and those tubes have left permanent scars on the insides of my cheeks! They have been off for 25 years and the scars are still there!

I had an underbite, but I was a pretty little kid and the expander did exactly what it was supposed to do and fixed it. It was not the kind of expander that required a key, though, it was just a really powerful spring. It hurt for quite a while after I got it but eventually I forgot about it even being there. I don't remember if it effected my speech but if it did I never noticed. I always thought my front teeth must have been crooked, but looking at pictures of myself pre-braces I don't think they were. I think they split apart from having my palate expanded, and the braces brought them back together, because I do remember having a huge gap between my front teeth and my lateral incisors getting pushed up a little. This was after my treatment started though.

After I got them off, I had a regular wire retainer that I wore pretty much like I was supposed to, except for the two times I lost it after lunch at school, but either I wasn't really ready to get the braces off or the retainer wasn't the right kind, because after a few months my parents noticed my front teeth moving backward and the orthodontist said yep, they definitely moved! We could put the braces back on...

I was really bummed because I was enjoying finally being able to eat candy and chew gum again! But I ended up with a new retainer that had springs behind my front teeth, and, after a few years, I was done with that too. It has long since stopped fitting, but not because my teeth have moved back, just because I was a kid then and my mouth is adult-sized now.

I only ever needed that treatment, nothing else, and my teeth are very straight and my bite is very aligned. However, in my profile, my chin sticks out and my upper jaw is short. I have always wondered if I was supposed to have something else done, or if not getting the braces back on wasn't the right thing to do, or if some people's faces just look like this and it's not really related to anything an orthodontist could do and its more in the realm of plastic surgery.

When I'm bored I like to make up elaborate stories in my head of an alternate timeline where once I was a little older, I went back to the orthodontist for my "real" treatment (like I know many people did - many of my classmates had a little bit of braces in elementary school and then had "real" braces and etc for several years in middle and high school) and this fictional treatment would of course include a facemask.

I started my treatment late, when I was 22; i'm now 29. I had a jones jig appliance combined with a nance button, followed by full upper and lower ceramic braces and elastics. I wanted the best smile possible and went with the jones jig. My total treatment time was about 3 years and then I got an upper essix and lower hawley retainer.

The first time I had braces was in mid twenties for 2 years nothing special only one rubberband, The second time was my late thirties because the first ortho didn't correctly fix my bite, found later he was fined by the state for malpractice, again just braces and elastics for 2.5 years.  The third time I had to get braces was because my wisdom teeth were removed and I had developed a large overbite and crossbite. 2 days before I turned 50 I was fitted with full braces and on the very first day I also was fitted with a headgear, I was told to get up 20+ hours a day of wear. So the very first day I wore may headgear right away in the office, boy did I get the looks from the kids. I wore it for 2 years the last 8 months for 24\7. Finally after 2.5 years the ortho decided I needed a tough crib which I wore for the last year of my treatment 3.5 years total. So that was 8 years of treatment which I loved every day of it.

When I was 13 (over 20 years ago!) I wore a functional appliance - the lisp when I first got it was immense! It was borderline as to whether I needed headgear too (unfortunates I didn’t need it - booooo!)

I then needed fixed braces but as a shy, insecure teenager refused and she said that’s fine - maybe when your older - one of my biggest regrets in life! Lol!

Fast forward to now - and I have a modified twin block brace and headgear from BracesShop!

I had braces when I was 12. I had an overbite and my 2 upper front teeth where not straight. I started with metal braces for about 9 months and after that I got a twin block which I was supposed to wear 24/7 but I hated that thing so I only wore it at night. After 6 months of twin block I got metal braces again but the gum on my lower jaw didn't respond well. The orthodontist said I was probably allergic and my gum was al swollen which meant they took out my lower braces. I finished my upper jaw but my lower jaw is back to how it was. Now I wear Invisalign on my upper jaw at night.

-note: I'm not a native English speaker so excuse me if there are any mistakes

Sounds similar to my story, when I was 11-12 I was told I needed braces.  But after a tooth extraction and almost 2 years later when I was ready, I was told it wasnt 100% necessary any longer.  Being 14 then, and several of my other friends already done with their braces I said that I didnt want them :(

I kind of had the full program myself  :P

Started off with an activator and high-pull headgear. Later on I also got a neck strap headgear, but didn’t have to wear them at the same time. The activator also had an expansion screw fitted, which I needed to start turning after the first months.
As I didn’t really stick to the required wearing time from my orthodontist, she gave up on my treatment with those appliances after a bit over 2 years.

As an alternative, and an option that required less “cooperation”, I got a Herbst appliance, later followed by metal brackets on top and bottom. After the Herbst was removed, I had to wear rubber bands (again, did not do that all the time :D).

That all lasted 4-5 years and I got fitted with fixed retainers. After they came loose from time to time and the top one even broke eventually, I got removable retainers as well.
Still wearing them once a week at night.

wow it sounds like they tried 'everything' on you! if you don't mind me asking, what was the worst part of the treatment for you? I've always thought a Herbst looks very uncomfortable but as you pointed out it requires less 'co-operation' so you just have to get on with it!!

For me, the high-pull headgear was really the worst part. As you said, the Herbst was uncomfortable but didn’t offer an option. Just had to go with it.
But to go out every day with the headgear (even when I was younger and it was relatively normal) wasn’t really fun. And even when I was further in the treatment and only had to wear it at home/during the night, I didn’t like it at all  ;D
I personally don’t really understand all the headgear fanatics here  ??? no offense  :D

I can understand being insecure about having braces, especially as an adult. I didn't start my treatment until I was 21. At the end of the day, no one really says anything and you're in pursuit of a perfect smile, so who cares. Smile with confidence!

I had removables for maybe 7 years - because I didn't wear them enough. Lower with a screw to push the front teeth forward, upper Hawley with various springs. They were doing pretty well until I went to university - then I only wore them at night - and not many nights.
By the time I came back they didn't fit, so I stopped going to appointments, and that was the end! They have relapsed, but not terribly, but I may go for treatment again - probably.
My first treatment was free (in the UK), but the next one wont be. Hoping I can get it done with removables but hardly any orthos seem to use removables on adults.

My treatment starts yesterday. For the moment I do not have brackets but orthoclonic brace on top only like this :

https://dereferer.me/?https://dereferer.me/?http://anonym.to/?https://dereferer.me/?https://dereferer.me/?http://www.labo-guilbaud.fr/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/orthoclonic2.png

It's invisible but kind of disturbing because of the lisp. Not easy to talk properly.

Brackets are going to come on top in several month, when there will be more space. During that time, I will have an orthoclonic brace on bottom, then braces on bottom.

it wasn't braces so much as a metal band with hooks on it for elastics. It was anchored along my upper and lower gums and then about twenty elastics used to immobilize my jaw. It wasn't "braces" per se but I did enjoy the hardware nonetheless

I had to look this up and honestly it looks way more uncomfortable than braces! Although I've never had either myself so only going on what it looks like.
I guess they are sort of braces but a very different style - like the difference between invisalign and traditional braces in a way.

Well I had a metal plate put into my jaw so I was asleep when it was wired shut. I woke up unable to open my mouth which was kinda scary at first, but once that passed it was pretty nice. I couldn't open my mouth, which made me unable to talk in anything more than a mumble. feeling hungry all the time was the only part that sucked, though. Still, I got to be quiet and nonverbal and it cut down the amount of talking to me that people do and that was probably the best part. Once my jaw was freed I had a hard time opening it for about a week but the tendons loosened up and my mouth opened all the way while I was eating pizza. All in all though, I'd love to do it again

I understand. Its no problem at all.
I completely understand what you mean by everything that come with having your jaw wired shut. Its a bit of a trip especially when you wake up from the surgery, as you were explaining, and attempting to open your mouth and unable to whatsoever. Being hungry is the worst part especially when someone us munching down on some bomb ass food or the food network channel is playing! Lol

Half my life ago I had my jaw wired shut after orthognathic surgery.  It certainly was a trip - not 100% I'd do it again for the full six weeks though, but I'll do a weekend any time.

fortunately, my father really loves to cook, and he experimented with different soups - I never went hungry, and to this day I have a "fetish for soup"!
