Which parts of braces are the most interesting for you?
« on: 03. May 2007, 23:00:05 PM »
Which parts of braces are the most interesting (or fascinating) for you?

In case of fixed braces: Is it the brackets, the molar bands, the archwires, additional wires, elastics? What region do you consider as most interesting? The upper or lower jaw, the front part or the teeth at the side? Or altogehter?

In case of removable braces and hawley retainers: The upper or lower jaw? The plastic or the wires? The labial bow or whatelse? Perhaps the srews?

In case of headgear? The inner bow, the outer bow, the point where both meet, the parts around the neck or head?

And of course: Which kind of braces do you like most?

In my opinion a part of fixed braces to be worth seeing is the brackets on the lower jaw's front teeth. The lower front teeth are narrow and therefore there are many brackets near to each other!

Nevertheless I like all kind of braces, but fixed braces less and retainers more. I think it's because they are not so common.

I like the top braces the most. The molar bands especially and the wires, especially if there is a missing tooth or a spring or hook too. I like fixed braces the most, but I also love bonded retainers and a Herbst appliance.

Fixed braces: Pretty much a tie here, it is really hard to decide. The brackets and archwires look and feel so interesting against the lips, and elastic hooks on the canines are a definite added plus. I am with you on the lower front brackets, they look really cool so close together. It is fun to play with the inner cleat of the molar bands, and bicuspid bands add that extra shine. I guess my favorite part is the headgear tubes on the upper molar bands, the way they push into the cheeks and they look like a jet engine hanging off of each molar

Retainers: I had a classmate in high school that had a Ricketts retainer. I liked the way the wire looped back around the canine and made it different from the Hawley.

Headgear: The new force module headgear looks totally lame. Cervical headgear with an elastic strap and a double loop facebow is way cooler, just like a friend of mine had.  I managed to put his on a couple of times on the sly, and I loved the feeling of the thick wire and the double loops.

Overall: A big shiny metal mouth of course! They look extra good during the last half of the treatment and the teeth are getting straighter, but still shiny with elastics going from the upper canines to the lower bands.

Powerchains instead of single ligatures are the best, because they add are much more full look, especially if its dark colored chains.

2nd place would be the bands, they are big and rish in details, I was happy when my ortho said that I need to wear 8 bands on all my molars for 3 years, until I got them and wished I would only have 4 of them, because now the wire pokes my inner cheeks and I can do nothing against it :(

Regular Metal braces

Elastic at the corner of the mouth
Powerchain on both top and bottom-silver coloured

complete with a combo headgear (facebow is really important)

PS a pair of herbst would really help too.

I've been wearing fixed braces for over two years ... so I've got to be honest and admit that no part interests me any more ... the interest waned a few months after I got braces. :-[   They have been no problem at all ... no discomfort at all ... I love the bright colours of the ligs and powerchains and wearing neon elastics ... but the interest of having to wear them 24/7 is long gone and been replaced with continual cleaning ... so that my social life remains as great as it always was! ;D

On a regular set of metal braces, I think that the molar bands are the most interesting. That's not counting headgear, etc..

I've had braces for over two years and powerchains for 19 months ... and they're awesome!

I love the colours and how the colour runs from bracket to bracket.  The pc's also do amazing work at closing gaps!

The bulk and discomfort of the molar bands is primary for me.  Those sensations are the most difficult to replicate with fakes, unless you are willing to risk tooth movement.  In reality, they are the least-complained about parts.

Definitely the plastic of a top hawley retainer.
I have never needed one but I have worn a thick bite plate for six years full time.
I can talk better with it in and my mouth gets sore if I try eating without it.
Have got an articulator as well.- (top Hawley and bottom all in one with breathing hole at the front)
Its good sometimes for a change !

Definatly Face mask. Nothing better than a bunch of elastics hooked to molar bands and appliance holding a ridiculous metal mask on your face with a chin cup and forehead pad. So noticeable...

For me it's the metal brackets on the top front teeth - canine to canine.

For some reason I find the wires most interesting - all those loops, thicknesses, shapes, curves, elastic hooks - where would fixed braces be without them.

Where fixed braces are concerned, I have to admit to liking the closing stages of treatment where the wires are thick, the teeth are almost straight, perhaps a couple of elastic bands hanging off them...

Never seen a real headgear, but I have to agree with tingrin - the force module headgear looks so cheap and easy. At least the old metal version with that triangular loop connecting it to the facebow looked more substantial.

For me it is the plastic of retainers. I've only worn such a retainer once but it was a very nice experience. I think the more and the thicker the plastic is, the more interesting it gets....

It flows from one thing to the next.  Initially, it's always the upper front teeth and the junction between the metal and the tooth.  I often wonder how hard people initially test to see how strong the bracket is stuck to the tooth, or if they even care.  Obviously those with a popped off bracket know exactly how strong it is (was).  Then I think the back near the molar bands.  It deeply perturbs me when the brackets don't go all the way to the back.  It's like they're not even trying.  One thing I remember seeing in my childhood often but almost never see now are bite plates with ball hooks in the front that rest under the archwire.  The physics between the elastic ligatures and the wire also is amazing.   I get mad at self-ligating brackets.

I like metal brackets on women (not girls) who have larger teeth that aren't overpowered by the brackets. I like  it when their teeth are very straight because the woman is near the end of treatment. If the woman is pretty and use makeup skillfully it's amazingly attractive! I like women with big, relaxed, confident smiles, especially when the smile is wide enough to show the bottom braces. I also enjoy triangular elastics between the incisors that show when their mouth is open. Very cool!

Traditional metal brackets with clear powerchains...a nice bit of confused wire around canine hooks is all good. Must be upper and lower of course :)

Most definitely HG, or more precisely the extraoral part, both the outer bow and the strap, whether cervical or high pull. The most interesting part, if I have to choose, though, is where the wire comes out of the mouth, especially when the mouth is shut. Hated wearing it myself, though...

Intraorally, it would be elastics - the more the better. In particular, though, elastics going across the front teeth, or going from one side to the other.

Sorry, I don't know how to quote but Combo Headgear and herbst would be a dream come true.
Making out with a facebow with biteplate attachment and herbst would be so exciting  ::)

Removable braces for me for sure.

The wire and the loops in the wires. I am very inriqued by the picture of the girl wit the double labial bow in the forum-pictu.

Wearing braces i like the feeling of the loops on the inside of my mouth and acrylic on the roof of my mouth.

For headgear, where the inner and outer facebow meet is my favourite. The part that keeps your lips from closing on each other (a constant reminder that it's there).

I prefer the safety modules on headgear straps and prefer them to elastics. I also prefer cervical headgear to high pull - though combination is best!

On fixed braces, my favorite part is the wires doing interesting things, like loops and hooks above the brackets or a wire power chain.

I'm also especially fascinated by anything inside the mouth behind the teeth, like on the palette or under the tongue, that you can just barely see when talking with someone.

My favorite part of the headgear is where the inner bow meets the outer bow, right between or slightly in front of the lips...

I loved seeing headgears.  I was fortunate that had to wear a headgear for 2 years for 20 hours a day, I decided to wear it 24/7 and loved the looks and questions. Then I was lucky enough to have wear a tongue crib for 7 months.

By far...headgear. All types of headgear are of interest to me, but facemasks and combination headgear are most interesting probably because they are so noticeable. I also find appliances such as the Herbst, MARA, Crozat, etc. interesting...they look very intriguing in a mouthful of metal braces.

The questions that I got were when I was wearing my tongue crib.  The main one was what is that cage in mouth for? Once when I was wearing my headgear a young lady commented on how it took guts to wear it in public.

In fixed normal braces (brackets only) I love the elastics. If there are more things than brackets, my favourite appliance is the tongue crib.

In removable braces I prefer the plastic or metal parts that are in the anterior part.

And with a headgear my favourite view is the way in the lips are in touch with the facebow, because the facebow force the lips to go out when the person wants to close them

The more metal and the more devices the better.

I like fixed appliances in addition to metal/ceramic braces.
Especially if they really get in the way of your tongue like expanders, a tongue crib or maybe a fixed bite plate.
Not being able to take them out and being forced to adapt to them as much as you can is very intriguing.

Blue/black powerchains over bulky brackets and some extra hooks on the wire>>>
