Philippines is right up at the top

Can confirm this, it isn't even that uncommon for adults to wear braces here.

Philippines by far! Everywhere you go there are people with braces everywhere and so many dental clinics around to get them for around $100 USD

in new zealand they're considerably expensive (weak dollar, unchanging prices) and almost if not all of it has to be paid out of your pocket so while braces are pretty common here, people are always hesitant to get them bc of the prices

I live in the USA and grew up in a fairly affluent area, and for the longest time I believed that EVERYONE wore braces here. Where I lived, pretty much everyone did. I remember going through my yearbook in high school and making a tally of all my classmates. One column for everyone who currently had braces. One for everyone who wore braces at one time. One column for everyone who never had braces. I was in ninth or tenth grade at the time, and there were around 300 people in my class. We were about evenly split between people currently wearing braces and people who had gotten theirs off already. The "never had them" column had like seven people in it.

The entire country is not like that, though, and as far as I know, it's pretty rare for dental or health insurance to include orthodontics. People keep saying this, but I have never, ever seen a plan that does. Maybe it's different for children? The way it usually goes is that SURGERY is covered by insurance but the actual braces are paid for out of pocket.

I'd agree with Cassandra - that's an interesting exercise, going through old yearbooks and making a tally!

In my rural USA community, people started getting braces in 5th grade. The local ortho (who came to town 1 day per week; he also had offices in other small towns) liked to start by pulling the bicuspids, putting brackets on the 4 upper incisors, and using a covered wire back to molar bands. At sleepovers, those girls were also wearing cervical headgear at night.
Kids continued to get braced over the next several years, peaking in 7th or 8th grade. Most wore metal brackets for 2-3 years, followed by upper hawley retainers and bonded lower lingual retainers.
No exaggeration: Probably 80% of my classmates went through this treatment, more or less. I never saw anyone with a herbst, or with any kind of functional appliance, until I found sites like M's Mouthwear!

Yep, @coffeemate, I didn't see functional appliances either outside of little kids. I had never heard of any kind of plastic removable appliance being used for a teenager or adult and I am pretty sure that where I live, they aren't.

It's very usual in Spain, specially in Teena, but also in adults. Just fixed braces, though, never seen anyone with headgear around....
