Wearing a plastic plate
« on: 05. October 2009, 03:50:28 AM »
Does anyone here like to leave their retainer plate in for eating because they prefer the feeling of it?

I have never worn a retainer while eating. I don't think its very good because of the food sticking to them and making them all nasty. I don't like the feeling of them at all when I'm chewing. That must just be me.

Feels good to eat with them in.

When I was at school I remmeber peopel often left them in to eat and were told to.  These days do orthodontists tell peopel to remove them for eating?

My ortho tells me to keep it in while eating, but brush everything afterwards. Something to do with the chewing moving your teeth faster he said?

I have a plate from the braces shop and sometimes eat with it in my mouth. When I had a removable brace as a teenager I always kept it in my mouth for eating. My orthodontist told me it could only be removed for cleaning and contact sports.

So do you eat with it in because you like the feeling or because you can't be bothered to tale it out?

I always heard that you were supposed to remove it. I would be worried about food getting stuck in it and smelling, but I guess it's no different than any other appliance (including fixed braces)...just have to brush them often and keep 'em clean!

Now this makes me curious how many people do this - retained, you should make a poll! :)

In my case the whole interest with braces / retainers was the having the plastic there and talking and eating with it all the time, no option.
Not much different to denture wearing I suppose.
I really don't know how many others feel the same.

When I first got a retainer it was very strange to have it in for eating ( and speaking, of course) but after a few weeks it was really strange the first time i finished a meal and suddenly realised that I had forgotten the plastic plate was there.
Now I find it quite difficult if I take it out to eat because the roof of my mouth is super sensitive and gets sore with any hard food, and I have to concentrate to talk clearly without it.

I was told to eat with mine in, because the chewing action actually helped the plate do its work, but to take it out to clean afterwards.  This was impossible though, as I cannot chew with the damn thing in.

I had a plate just so that I don't bite the lower brackets off, so it was essential anyway to eat with it in.
