Just be careful that you don't slip from past tense to present tense. I'm enjoying your story so far and looking forward to more of it.

Part 13: It's a learning process.

Dr. Brandt held a mirror over so that she could see his work. He spoke to her as always in a calm and friendly tone.

"Now Elise, I've added a very strong wire this time and you can see how the springs are set. Please do not fiddle with them, as they're key into getting that bite under control." He picks up an expander key and tilts her head up "Now I still expect you to turn your expanders, but I want to push you some."

Elise silently cries as Dr. Brandt does two turns on each expander then sits her up. She is shooed out to the waiting room slurping spit and scaring patients who await their own appointments today. Slowly and with knots in her stomach she speaks to Kara to get her next appointment.

In the back, Cora is nervously breathing gas as she wished she could hold her husband's hand. Slowly but surely her mind drifts as the tray to her right is loaded with tools and metal.

Dr. Brandt strides over pulling gloves and a mask on as he takes his spot behind Cora's head. "Hello, Cora. Today I am going to do two turns on your expanders and then we are going to do wire ligatures, and then it's headgear day for you."

The word headgear made Cora mumble incoherently as the retractor was placed. He spoke to Hannah as he worked.

"Due to her past, I will be wiring this cervical headgear in. I understand that it's not the most fun, but this will be so good for her in the end. We may be using a few different methods and combinations of headgear. Today I will start with the upper jaw. My hope is that we only need the headgear for about a year."

Cora could hear a click in the back of her mouth as the wire from the headgear was wired to the bands on her backmost molars.  The pressure was immediate, and in her drugged state she wasn't really sure how to make it stop.  The appointment lasted two hours as wires were replaced, and a hot pink strap was used to hold it to her head.
