Title: Retainers; All day? Or just at night?
Post by: Slushoman on 02. May 2008, 01:55:22 AM
I have my braces taken off this summer ;D
But then I was told I would have to wear a retainer all day all the time.
That simply isn't going to happen. I don't mind wearing it at night. But I start high learning in the fall and I don't not want to be wearing the retainer.
Would it be ok to just wear the retainer at night?

My ortho had me wear my retainer 24/7 for a year, then at night for a year, now 3 years+ just when needed.

Simple rule: if your teeth start to hurt after you've put the retainer in, you're not wearing it long enough. How long is "enough" depends on your disposition. Maybe you can even get a clear (thus invisible) retainer? That's what I had - unless you always grin like a cheshire cat, it really takes some staring to detect it at all. Just talk to your ortho.

BTW, there are lots and lots of adults wearing braces and retainers, especially in higher ed - might even be cool to be one of them! Kind of makes you stick out, which is not all that wrong at this level. Really! :)
