Relapse
« on: 26. August 2021, 04:11:25 AM »
Hi guys, I want to ask you a question.  How likely is it that someone will need a second or even a third treatment? I would like to know if there are more causes, or if any of you wanted another treatment without needing it.

If you watch YouTube videos posted in the Videos section of this forum, you will come across some where the adult is getting braces for the second or third time.  Sometimes it is relapse because retainers were not worn as prescribed, or because the original treatment only straightened teeth and did not address bite issues.  I've gone through some instagram feeds of some Brazilians where you see braces going on, coming off, and going on again.  I think it is a kind of fashion thing.  You also see lots of adults who confirm they were treated in childhood, but the teeth no longer look like were actually treated.  I think movement happens to some extent regardless of retainer compliance, that it is just part of normal aging.

Could have multiple reasons. For example I was advised to get my wisdom teeth removed because if they'd advanced they could have possibly moved some of my teeth again.

You definitely see a lot of people getting them a second time around from not wearing there retainers. I got them originally in middle school/high school. Invisalign towards the end of college and just recently got them a third time from my wisdom teeth coming in sideways and begging if to crowd my teeth so it’s definitely possible

After braces, I guess, in principle, there's 3 scenarios:

1) In their new positions, all your teeth now "mesh together". As such, like with the rest of us, the teeth will tend to hold each other in place, so even if you don't wear your retainers, the teeth won't move. and you get to keep your perfect smile

2) In their new positions, all your teeth DO NOT "mesh together", thus when you don't wear your retainers, the teeth will want to move into some other position, and will tend to become stable in that new position. This is the scenario which mans you may need braces again.... and again!

3) (part-way between 1 & 2): In their new positions, all your teeth ALMOST "mesh together". If you don't wear retainers, your teeth will move a little, and your smile remains pretty good, just not quite as perfect as before. For people who started off with a very BAD smile, this situation is probably acceptable.

As a teen. my son had twin-blocks, to persuade his lower jaw to grow faster, and meet up with the top one: as no teeth actually moved, he never had retainers, and his teeth looked very acceptable. A few years later, as a young adult, his lower wisdom teeth arrived, and screwed thing up, but that is a 100% separate issue.

I think it's not that uncommon. I know someone who had a second treatment despite having a fixed retainer. Don't know the cause though. My teeth are shiting a little as well. I guessed because of my wisdom teeth pushing against my back molars, but internet says that research says that there is no prove wisdom teeth cause shifting
