Linda Jacobson: her story continues
« on: 10. February 2024, 18:45:17 PM »
So the "CJDL Story" now switches from Dianne over to Linda.

There was a short "Linda story" a bit ago, not quite sure which storyverse that happened in. It might have been this one, either sometime between the past and now, or maybe it's in the future, I'm not sure. It was a very short relationship with a guy that Linda had met at the supermarket, so doesn't have a major effect on this story..

So, the four members of CJDL are all now braced: they just got their ligs changed, and are currently sporting some bright neon-blue ones. The girls are working hard on songs for the new album, and Linda's story will follow them whilst recording the new album, plus working with Northern Girls, preparing for their big European tour.

The first thing the new story will be covering will be their copyright issue with Fiona Lewis... if you remember, Dianne 'stole' several lines of lyrics for Fiona's song, and as well as simply recompensing her, have suggested some 'joint ventures' to boost Fiona's singing career.

Chapter 1

The original plan had been to postpone their TV appearance until after they had finished recording their new album, but that wasn't to be: a major weekend talkshow had approached them. Knowing that they would be getting busy with tour preparations, they wanted to make sure to get them on the show before that. As a result, the day before the show, Brian and Stuart, the two managers, had put out a joint press release, which many of the paparazzi had found odd, as normally the four girls would have held a full press conference for such things. The press release did, of course, highlight that the full story would be revealed 'within 48 hours'.

So, tonight, there were 7 of them waiting in the green room: Brian and Stuart, the two managers, Carol, Jenny, Dianne and Linda, along with Fiona. Grayson Malton - the talkshow host - had been told the back-story for the copyright issue, and prior to the rehearsal they had explained to Grayson that getting Fiona onto the show, to give her some exposure, was part of their 'copyright payment'... but that was not to be made public knowledge.

----

"So, did you see the news yesterday? It seems that the girls from CJDL have been a bit naughty, and apparently 'stolen' some words from a song by Fiona Lewis. Oooh, bad girls! You shouldn't steal! So we thought we should find out the REAL story about what happened... would you welcome to the show: Carol, Jenny, Dianne and Linda, the four members of CJDL". The girls were all suitably dressed up for TV, and bounced onto the set, joining the 2 other guests already on the settee.

Of course, they smiled widely!

"Oh my goodness, I'm being blinded" said Grayson, jokingly holding his hand up to stop the 'glare' from the girl's braces. "I mean, all FOUR of you have braces, and they are all shiny and blue too! Now, I remember Jenny getting braces last year, but now you ALL have them! What *IS* going on there?"

"It's called 'providing support for a girl in need'!" replied Linda

"Pardon?"

"Well, Dianne here had a problem: she had braces when she was at school, and ended up with lovely teeth. But her nasty wisdom teeth came along, and started to make her teeth all crooked again. But she was embarrassed about getting braces again, as an adult." explained Carol.

"So, it was no biggie for Jenny to have braces, but it was for Dianne. Ok, go on...."

"So I was having some minor treatment already, and was wearing retainers, so Linda and I suggested that we would get braces to support her..." continued Carol.

"So you and Linda don't actually NEED braces?"

"Actually, I DO need braces" replied Linda. "I have a minor issue which I had decided not to bother doing anything about, but when a band-buddy needs support...."

"So, I guess I'm the only one who doesn't ACTUALLY need these sort of braces." said Carol. "But you have to admit, the matching braces do look good, don't they?"

"I guess so. So there's going to be four of you onstage in braces when you go on tour?"

"No, there will be eight of us! All the four girls in Northern Girls have braces too... same reasoning..."

"Now THAT is going to be a sight to behold!" There was a little laughter from the audience. "Anyway, you were in the news yesterday, for being naughty girls?"

Dianne raised her hand. "Entirely my fault, I can not tell a lie!"

"Oh, ok... so what happened?"

"Well, Jenny had come up with a nice song melody, and asked me to write some words for the song. So I remember relaxing, trying to think up some words. I had already written the first verse when these words came into my head... I mean, they just fitted the song perfectly, they sounded so right. We called the song 'Get Working'... we recorded it as part of our album, and the record company decided to release it as a single."

"And it's your current single that was at number one just a couple of weeks ago!" said Grayson, to applause from the audience.

"Yeah, if you're gonna screw up, you might as well do it with a number 1 hit! Who wants to mess around with anything less?"

"So you had no idea that you had used someone else's words?"

"We always check the lyrics of anything we write" explained Jenny, "there's a couple of big online database with all the song lyrics in. Except it seems that it's NOT quite all: Fiona Lewis' 'Escape the City' wasn't in it. To some extent I can understand that, it was never actually released as a single. But that's still no excuse for what happened. You know how I feel about music copyright."

"Yes, I remember you came on the show some time ago, when someone had used some of your music: it's so refreshing to hear someone being so honest about a mistake..."

"Oh, you should have seen Dianne's face when we found out" said Linda, "she was absolutely gutted!"

"I can imagine. So how DID you find out?"

"We received a letter from Fiona's solicitor, pointing out 'the error of our ways'..." replied Dianne.

"Well, let me just pause you there, and bring on our next guest, it's Fiona Lewis!"

Fiona came out, and the girls made a gap for her in the middle of the four of them, making it very clear that there was no animosity between them.

"Hello Fiona, nice to see you again! So, these ladies 'stole' some of the words from your song. I'm assuming you heard their song, and recognised your words, and took action?"

"To be honest, it wasn't me, it was my manager who had organised the solicitor's letter. The first that I knew about it was when Linda called me."

"Linda called you? She just 'happened to have' your personal phone number?" A few of the audience laughed.

"Oh, Linda and I know each other. Before she joined CJDL, she was a session musician, and she came on a short tour with me. We shared a few meals... and a few drinks too!" Another laugh.

"Ok, so Linda called you. What did she say?"

"Well, after exchanging pleasantries, she passed the phone over to Dianne, and the first thing Dianne did was apologise for what she had done. To be honest, I knew nothing about it at the time, so guessed my manager had done something. But hey, you hear stories about solicitors talking to solicitors, and managers talking to managers when these things happen. But not these girls, they skipped all that, and called me directly!"

"And what then?"

"Well, in a matter of a few sentences, it was clear to me that they wanted to 'put things right'. They could have just offered to give me what was due to me, but they felt they could do more than that... Maybe one of the girls can explain?"

Grayson looked at the girls. "Well" said Jenny, "in this game, money isn't everything. And I had a few instant ideas of things we could do to repay Fiona. So, we invited her and her manager over, and had a chat. And, of course, being musicians, we also went and played music together..."

"So I'm assuming that was a few days later?"

"No, we invited them over the same afternoon. I mean, why waste time?"

"So, am I allowed to ask what sort of an agreement you have reached?"

"Well, whilst much of the detail is clearly confidential..." explained Jenny, "we have acknowledged Fiona as co-writer on the song, and will be paying her suitable copyright fees. But we have also asked Fiona to come and be a guest at some of the performances on our upcoming tour. And you never know what else might happen!"

"That definitely sounds 'above and beyond'. So, Fiona, are you looking forward to joining these girls on stage?"

"Oh, yeah! When I visited them, I quickly discovered not only how much they enjoyed music, but that they are not your normal 'girl band'. They enjoy having fun, and I'm all for that. It's actually been a while since I've played live on stage, plus I've never performed at the O2, so that's going to be quite an experience for me!"

"The O2: isn't that where you are starting your tour?"

"Yes, that's right, we'll be starting with two nights at the O2 - we've never been there either yet - and Fiona, and maybe some others, will join us there!" explained Linda.

"So, what can you tell us about the tour?" asked Grayson.

"Not a lot to be honest, especially in terms of the content. We're about to go into the studios to record our new album, and straight after that, Northern Girls are coming over, and we'll be working out the details of what we'll be doing. But, I can tell you where we're going: we start with 2 nights at the O2, then we're going to be doing something like 20 nights all around England, Wales, Scotland, and I believe we're also going over to Belfast too! Then we're over to France, Germany, Austria, a couple of nights in Milan, Italy. After Poland we're going up to Finland, Sweden and Norway. Finally, we'll be finishing off with two or three performances at Wembley Stadium."

"Any plans for any of the festivals?"

"Yes, we'll definitely be at Glastonbury - I'm looking forward to that, and we're waiting to hear about a couple of others too."

"Sounds like you're going to be busy!"

"Yeah, I'm planning to have a long holiday afterwards, to recover!" said Linda.

"Me too!" added Jenny!

"So, I believe all of you are going to sing for us? So while you go over and get ready, let me just tell you what else we have lined up for you later in the show...."

A minute later, and the four CJDL girls, along with Fiona, were ready, and they started to perform CJDL's recent hit, 'Get Working', with Fiona leading the vocals. They had sung the song the day that Fiona first came to see them, but Fiona had come over earlier in the day, to rehearse for tonight.

As they finished the song, the audience clapped enthusiastically!

"Very well done, girls!" said Brian when they returned to the Green Room. "And Fiona, thank you too!"

"No, I should thank you guys: as Jenny said that first day, it's NOT just about money. I suspect today will help give me a nice boost, and I'll never complain about that. And I'll tell you what, performing with these four just now, that was fun... it's actually the first time I've performed as part of a group, and it felt good. So I'm looking forward to the guest appearances on the tour!"

The TV show was, of course, recorded, so the girls used social media to encourage people to watch, posting pictures of the 5 of them before and after performing.

The response they got after the show was aired was incredibly positive: their fans supported the way they had admitted to their wrong-doing, and thought the joint performance was excellent, with comments like 'I hope my tickets are for the night she's with you!'

Chapter 2

So, the tour dates have been pretty much fully worked out, and the tickets for the UK, being the first of the dates, already went on sale. As promised, the fan club members had tickets reserved for them, allowing any of them who wanted to go (and could afford it, tickets weren't cheap!) to go. It goes without saying that there has recently been a large number of new fan club members!

It's a couple of days later, and they've all just had breakfast together.

"Linda can you spare a minute?" asked Brian.

"Sure...". Linda went with Brian into his office.

"I've actually got a few bits to chat with you about."

"You sound like the headmaster, about to tell me, one of your pupils, off!".

Brian laughed. "No, nothing bad. It's probably closer to an 'informal annual appraisal'." he replied, smiling. "So why don't I start by asking  how thing are with you, the girls, the band, the rest of us...."

Linda thought a moment. "You know, things are actually pretty good! We all still seem to get on well, despite how much time we spend together. There's no nastiness, and I really feel part of the group, and not like a 'new girl'."

"I think they feel good about you too: you've definitely contributed your share over the last few months. So, you should have got your 'back-pay' from the girls by now, is that all ok?"

"Very much so, it's actually quite a bit more than I expected!"

"Yes, we did quite well on the last tour, despite it being a short one. By the way, if you need help with finding suitable 'wealth management' consultants, then do ask. To be honest, you need to look after whet you earn now carefully, it may need to last you a while. Got any plans for it yet?"

"Yes, I'm seriously looking for a new flat, or maybe even a house. Where I am now is rented, and while it's nice, I could do with a slightly bigger place."

"Well, again, if you need recommendations for solicitors and so on, ask. Which actually brings us nicely to the thing I really need to talk to you about..."

"Oh yeah, what's that?"

"Well, as you know, this house is jointly owned by Jenny, Carol and Dianne, along with me and Lisa. We were wondering if you were at all interested in 'investing' in the house too?"

"You think I'm THAT rich?"

"No, not yet, but this next tour is going to bring in quite a bit of money, for all of you, probably more than you realise. And I'm not suggesting a massive lump sum. Whilst we own this house outright, the girls actually have mortgages on their own houses."

"So what you proposing then?"

"Well, as you know, we currently use one of the bedrooms as an office for Callum and Paige. We'd like to turn it back into a bedroom again, so we'd like to build an outside extension, with office space, plus some storage space. If you're interested, then you would pay for that work, and use that as your first investment. In addition, the fund we have for property maintenance is getting a bit low, so you can also contribute to that..."

"And how much would you be talking about?"

"Not really sure yet, for now I'm just asking if you're interested. Clearly we'll need to get the place valued, so we can fairly decide what your share will be, but we'll get that all checked by a solicitor, and we can be very open about all the costs. There's no real rush, I'm not really going to have time to pursue it properly till after the tour, but if you're interested, then I can get the ball rolling on getting the new offices designed and then costed. So take your time, think about it. Maybe have a chat with the others."

"Yeah ok. In principle I do like the idea, but I do need to have a proper think about it."

"Sure. Hey, by the way, thank you for your help with that copyright issue: your knowing Fiona was so useful!"

"Yeah, I feel really bad for Dianne, it's a writer's worst nightmare! You know, Fiona made a comment on the show, about solicitors and managers speaking, almost ignoring the artists: in so many cases it feels like the only people who REALLY make money out of copyright issues are the lawyers. Ok, yes, I can understand that sometimes things can be very 'grey', but when you've simply screwed up, why don't more people just admit to it, and work out a solution. Dianne had a lot of guts to own up on the chat show you know, with so many people looking on - she has my respect for that!"

"Couldn't agree more! So, you looking forward to the tour? I know there's still a lot to do!"

"Yes, it's gonna be a lot more work than the last tour. I'm really looking forward to working with Northern Girls again. And, of course, Yu-Eye arrives tomorrow. It will be interesting working with someone new, but we got on well over in Korea, and we've exchanged a few emails since too. I think she'll do us a lot of good. Is anyone going to collecting her?"

"Callum was going to go. Join him if you like!"

"Sure, that could be fun, as long as I don't get spotted."

"If noone is expecting you to be there, then you're less likely to be seen! Just don't smile too much, or you might give the game away: there can't be THAT many people with blue braces!"

So the following afternoon, Linda and Callum went up to Heathrow late afternoon to meet Yu-Eye. She was staying at 'the mansion' with the girls for the next two to three weeks, while they worked on then recorded their new material. After that, she was planning on being a tourist for a couple of weeks!

Chapter 3

The four girls had been in the recording studios for a couple of days so far: they had booked the studios for 2 weeks, although they reckoned that they could probably be done within the week.

Yu-Eye had come over to England just over a week ago to produce their new album, and had spent some time with them rehearsing at 'the mansion'. Already they had recorded six of their songs, and the girls seemed to be getting on really well with Yu-Eye, liking her ideas: they weren't particularly radical ideas, but her small suggestions had made the songs better.

They had just finished laying down the instruments for their seventh track, and were taking a break before moving on to over-dubbing the vocals. Linda was browsing through her contacts on her personal phone: like the others, she had two phones, one was her 'official CJDL' phone that she had been given whilst in Korea, that she would use to get official band emails, and to post pictures and videos online; the other was the phone she had before joining the band, and it was the one she used to contact family and friends.

There were loads of old and now-irrelevant contacts in there that needed to just be deleted, and that was what she was doing. She had just finished on the 'L's, and had moved to the 'M's, where she found 'Mary Robinson'. It had been several months since Linda had spoken with Mary, one of her friends from back at college. So she broke off from doing the deleting, and called her.

"Hi Linda... it's been a while!"

"Yes, it has, Mary, and I'm sorry that I never managed to return your calls. My life has kinda changed this last year..."

"It has, hasn't it? How's it going for you?"

"Whilst there's a few down-sides, there's a lot more good things happening..."

"What do you mean?"

"Well, I used to be a session musician, so I was always playing other people music. But I've started writing some of my own stuff now, which I'm really enjoying."

"Oh, that is really cool! Any of your stuff been released yet?"

"Sort of... I helped to write 'Braces Buddies', but there'll be a couple of my songs on our new album."

"CJDL have ANOTHER album on the way already?"

"Yeah, we're atually in the studios right now, recording it, so it should be out soon... and what a surprise, just in time for our European tour."

"Yeah, I saw about that: it looks like it's a long tour."

"It is. I mean the last tour - when I wasn't quite a full band member - was just a UK one, and was about a month, but this one is a bit over three months, all around Europe, with a festival or two thrown in too. Anyway, look, I was going through my contacts, and came across your name, and realised it's been absolutely ages since we got together, so I was wondering if you, and maybe a couple of the others, fancy getting together? A drink, or maybe a meal... my treat of course!"

"Well, funny you should say that: there's a group of us meeting up on Thursday. We're going to start at the pub, then go on for a chinese, why don't you join us?"

"I would absolutely LOVE to!"

"So, I'm guessing you're free then?"

"If I'm not, I'll MAKE myself free! To be honest, shouldn't be a problem. As I said, we're in the studios recording, so I don't think anyone will complain if we have an early day!"

"It's gonna be really good catching up with you! So the plan is to meet at The Ship - you remember that one? - between 6-30 and 7-00, then go on to the restaurant after that."

"Yes, I remember The Ship, we got drunk there far too many times!". Linda and Mary talked a bit more, before ending their call.

So far, the 4 CJDL girls have had pink and now blue ligatures. When they go on tour, there will be EIGHT of them in braces.

The big question is: how will they do their ligs?

- everyone in the same, single, colour?
- each has a single colour, 8 different colours for 8 different girls?
- some sort of mix of colours?
- rainbow?

Whilst they are performing, there will be cameras able to do great closeups, so they clearly want to show off their braces to their fans.

(Of course, they'll be in England for a couple of weeks at the start of their tour, giving them a chance to visit their ortho and change their ligs before moving on to Europe)

The options are endless. Possible choices could be, based on where they are performing:

1) In England: National flag colors for each group, eg. CJDL with red on top and blue on the bottom, with the Northern Girls going with red and white.

2) On the rest of the tour: If they want to keep it semi-professional, they could do one solid color for each group to set the two groups apart.

3) There is also the option of being completely off-the-wall and doing random colors for all of them.

4) Possibly each girl could have her ligatures match the color of the outfits she is performing in, assuming she wears the same color each time.

5) There is also the opportunity to have them changed between cities so that they are different each time they travel. There could be a chance to have their fans choose what colors they get before each show.

I think that is enough ideas for now, though I can think more.

It's interesting that we would often think "you must go back to your own ortho to get your ligs changed", but when you are in their situation (ie money is not REALLY a big problem!), it would be VERY possible to organise local ortho visits, especially as you're not asking those ortho's to do any actual treatment, but just swap out some little bits of rubber!

Maybe they need an ortho as part of their tour entourage, and change the ligs during the show!!!!

It wouldn't have to be an ortho changing them. All it takes is the right equipment. A ligature gun can be bought online to do it fast and without having to worry about loosening the brackets by pulling on them.

An ortho assistant usually does the ligature changes, so they wouldn't even have to go to an ortho to have them changed. One of their fans could easily do it for them if they have the training.

Yes, very good point. Maybe they can get Ben to do it for them....

Chapter 4

Thursday: Linda was actually quite excited, as it had been a while since she had actually managed to meet up with some of the people she was at college with: yes, she HAD been busy the last 6 months, but her whole life had changed - mainly for the better - and she had been doing so many other things. Like flying off to Korea. Or going up to Birmingham at a moment's notice! And writing new songs, including the first OST for that new anime.

"Guys, I hope you won't mind, but we'll need to finish a bit early tonight."

"Oh, some secret fella you've not told us about asked you out on a date?".

Linda smiled. "No, not quite as exciting, I'm meeting up with a group of friends from college I've not seen for a bit."

"Oh, ok... nothing wrong with that! Anyone we'd remember?"

"I doubt it, they're from my year, and who ever remembers kids from 'the year below'?

"Yeah, that's so true!"

So, that afternoon Linda had specifically asked the girls to take a slight break from recording, and quickly run through HER songs, so she could record them, and play them to Mary and the others that evening. After they finished for the day, she had gone home, back to her own place, to get some different clothes, then organised an Uber to get her to The Ship. The Ship is a pub, and that means they sell alcohol. And she intended to drink some. And you can't drive if you've been drinking. So the taxi was an obvious choice.

In terms of her looks, she had very specifically made sure she wasn't too 'glam' tonight, which was actually reasonably easy. The problem was that, if she dressed up too much, she might attract attention, and might get noticed as being who she was in her 'daytime job'. Yes, she would be very open with her college friends about who she was - to be honest, they all knew she was Linda Jacobson anyway, they all knew she used to do music at college, so if they had heard any pop news, they would know that she was now a member of a very big pop group.

So, I realise that I've never really described Linda, have I? Linda is 5ft 7in tall, the tallest of the four of the girls by a whole inch! Her hair is a pretty non-descript brown colour, to a little below her shoulders, which allows her to do various things with it. Typically, when she was 'on show', she would have her hair down, maybe clipped back at the sides a bit to keep it out of her face, which meant that by simply putting it up in some way, it could help to stop people instantly recognise her. When she was at college, her hair was a lot shorter, and she had been thinking recently whether to have it cut.... that was a decision for another day, for now she had simply tied it up in a 'messy bun'. She added a simple pair of blue earrings, to match the rather bright blue ligatures she had on her braces.

Again, when she was 'on show' she tended to wear quite a bit of fairly bold makeup: she had learned from the others that this worked a lot better for pictures and videos. When at 'The Mansion' working, she would wear very little makeup. Tonight she had a bit of a goth look about her, with dark eye makeup - definitely not something that a member of a girl band would want to wear!

Linda's wardrobe still consisted mainly of her older, pre-CJDL clothes: for the last tour, she was not a band member, so didn't need anything especially fancy, and although she had bought a few more 'upmarket' outfits since, she knew that she would need to go out and get quite a few more before they went on tour. Linda specifically chose some of her older clothes tonight, to help her 'blend in': an old Iron Maiden tour t-shirt and jeans. She left her 'band phone' at home, and almost forgot to take her 'braces kit' with her - which went into a fairly plain shoulder bag. She checked herself in the mirror before leaving: yes, hopefully she wasn't TOO recognisable.

A message popped up on her phone, to tell her that her taxi was nearly there, so she went out to meet it. Twelve minutes later it dropped her off outside 'The Ship'.

She was a little apprehensive as she went in: whilst she probably knew everyone who would be there tonight, she'd not actually met up with any of them since... well, since she had become a member of a certain very well known girl band. She just hoped that they would remember the Linda they used to know, and not get silly because of who she had become.

She walked into the pub, looking around to see who was there: she had specifically NOT come too early, so that hopefully she would easily spot the group. As she looked around, she saw someone wave, a face she recognised, so walked over.

"Hey there, Vivian!" Another couple of faces turned around. "Samantha! It's great to see you all. Mary's obviously not here yet?" There were also two guys with them.

"Linda! Mary said you'd be coming tonight, it's so good to see you!"

"I guess I'd better go get a drink... anyone need another yet? No? Ok, I'll be back in a moment!". She went over to the bar, where she had to wait a few minutes to get served. As she was getting her drink, Mary arrived, and came over to the bar. "What you fancy?" Linda asked her.

"You sure?". Linda nodded. "Oh, thanks... a half of Poreni lager for me, and a pint of the 'Old Oak' for Ross." Mary had been going out with Ross now for a couple of years, and Linda was surprised that he STILL hadn't proposed to Mary. With the drinks paid for, they returned to the table.

"So, who is everyone?" asked Linda.

"Well, this is my boyfriend Alex" said Vivian, "and that's Sam's fiance, Richard".

"Oh, Sam, congrats on that! So guys, I'm Linda, I was at college with these guys. Alex, why do you look familiar?"

"Oh, I was in the year above you guys."

"Ah, ok, so did you know Jenny Stevens, Dianne Fox or Carol Danvers then?"

Alex smiled. "Yes, vaguely."

"Ah, ok..."

"So, I hear you have joined them?" said Alex.

"Yes. I started by simply 'working' for them, as a session musician, and after going into the studios with them, and then touring with them, they asked me to join them as a full member."

"So, what's it like being a mega pop-star then?" asked Vivian. Clearly they all knew about Linda having joined CJDL, but were still talking to her like 'the Linda they all knew'.

"To be brutally honest, I don't really know yet. Since I've joined them, we've not actually done a lot of stuff publicly. Ok, so we went to Korea as CJDL, that was fun, and we played support for Darkest Knights for 3 nights... Oh, yeah, we were on TV just recently too..."

"I just love the way you just throw out the name 'Darkest Knights' as if they are some sort of local South London band" commented Vivian.

"They are actually really nice guys... So, anyone else coming to join us?" asked Linda.

"Yes, Terry, Rob and Zac should be here soon.... Hey, did I just see braces in your mouth there?"

Linda smiled, showing off her silver smile. Well, more of a blue and silver smile! "Yep, I got braces a few weeks ago, partly because I need them, and partly to support Dianne."

"To support Dianne?"

"Yeah, she had braces when she was at school, but her teeth got screwed up by her wisdom teeth, and she was unsure about getting them again, so we all got them to support her!"

"Uh?"

"Well, Dianne was feeling a bit unsure... hey, scrub that... a LOT unsure about getting braces. Of course, Jenny already had braces, and Carol was wearing a retainer again, so it was easy for her to switch back to braces. I actually borderline need them too, so got these, and between us we persuaded Dianne to get herself into braces too."

"I DO like the blue, it's very bold! So there'll be four of you on stage in braces for your tour?"

"No, there'll actually be EIGHT of us...", and Linda explained about the joint tour, and how Northern Girls all had braces too.

"Oh, look, Terry's here..." said Mary, as one girl and two guys came over to them and said hello. Two of them sat down, the other went to the bar.

"Hi Linda, nice to see you again" said Terry. Linda recognised Rob and Terry (a girl), but didn't know the other guy.

"Hey Terry. So I recognise Rob, but who is this handsome fellow?" asked Linda.

"Linda, meet Zac, he's a friend of Rob's" replied Terry.

"Hi Zac! How do you know these guys then?"

"Oh, I was in the year below at the college... Rob and I were in a couple of the college clubs together."

"Ah, right. So what do you do now then?" asked Linda.

"I'm a graphic artist..."

"Oh, ok, so what sort of graphic artist stuff do you do then?"

"I started off doing stuff for web sites, but I also do stuff for corporate advertising, in all sorts of media. What about you then?".

"Oh, I'm a musician and singer, I'm in a band and perform and write songs" replied Linda, deciding to have a bit of fun: it was clear that, from his question, noone had told him anything about Linda, and what she did now.

"Oh, what sort of music do you do?"

"What sort of music do you like?"

"I'm into all sorts of indi-rock, and a few other types. Went and saw BabyMetal a few months ago, they were good!"

"BabyMetal, I'm SOOO jealous: I was hoping to see them, but I wasn't around at the right time. Any music you don't like?" Linda omitted to say that the reason she couldn't watch BabyMetal was because she was actually halfway around the world in Korea at the time!

"Hmmm, not too keen on girl bands, I guess. So what sort of band is yours then?"

"Oh..." Linda turned to Mary. "Would you call the band I'm in a 'girl band'?"

"Yes, I think so.... Sorry!" replied Mary.

"It's a girl band. Although their music style did get a bit 'rockier' just before I started working with them... in fact, it was part of the reason I did."

Zac was looking slightly awkward. "Erm, should I know the band you're with?"

"Good question... Mary?"

"Oh, I should hope he does. I mean, you guys don't exactly hide from the press! And especially after what happened a couple of weeks ago." Mary was referring to their appearance on a primetime TV chat show with Fiona, where they had talked about their copyright issues, then sung together.

"Seems like you should know us then....". Linda was enjoying having a bit of fun with Zac, and all the others were watching on with big smile, not giving the game away.

Zac had spotted the smiles, and realised that Linda was playing with him. "Ok, so which girl band are you with then?"

Linda smiled, showing off her silver brackets on her lovely teeth. "So, I'm Linda Jacobson, and I'm the 'L' of 'CJDL'.... Alex over there knew the other three when they were at Croydon College: they were in the year above most of us."

"You're kidding me, aren't you?" Zac was clearly a bit surprised.

"No, not at all... I did music when I was at college, then another year at Music School. After that I was a session musician, did all sorts of stuff like films, adverts, as well as doing backing guitars and vocals for a few well known artists. Then one day I got a call from my agent, asking if I would like to work with a girl band for a few weeks: I ended up working for CJD for about 6 months, went into the studios with them, then toured with them... I only properly joined the band at the end of that tour. So I am indeed now a full member of CJDL!"

"In that case, what is a girl from a band like CJDL doing out with us here tonight?"

"Because I wanted to have an evening out with a few friends I've been neglecting for the last few months!" Linda smiled at Zac.

Chapter 5

When they moved to the Chinese restaurant, Linda made sure she was sat opposite Zac. Once Zac realised that - whilst Linda was indeed now a pretty big pop star - at heart she wasn't THAT different from the rest of them, he was quite relaxed with her.

It had been a while since Linda had been able to simply 'relax with a few friends' (who weren't who she 'worked' with), and she was enjoying the evening. They had just ordered a load of food for everyone to share, when Linda found her mind wandering. She closed her eyes for a moment, then, without thinking, she got a small pad of paper out of her bag, and started writing words on it.... Her mind was miles away, probably somewhere over the Atlantic or Pacific......

"Hello... Earth to Linda... come in please..." said Mary. Linda suddenly snapped out of it. "What you up to there?" asked Mary.

"Umm... sorry... umm, yeah... got ideas and words buzzing in my head... Wow, that sounds so like Jenny!" said Linda, smiling.

"What ideas? What words?"

"Ideas for a song. Something to do with friends and friendship...." Linda showed Mary the pad. "Words related to friends....". The list included words like 'colleagues, companions, partners, chums, mates'. "Got any bright ideas?"

"You missed off 'pals'!"

"Oh, yeah, thanks....."

"Hey guys, Linda is looking for words that mean 'friends', for a song...."

"You got 'classmates'? That's what we are!" suggested Vivian. "And 'schoolfriends' too I guess!"

"What about 'chums'? And bosom buddy'?" added Zac.

The group had fun over the next five minutes whilst waiting for their food to arrive trying to think of words and short phrases that related to friends and friendship: by the end, Linda's list had over 25 words on it. Whether all would be suitable was another matter, but it had been fun working with the group coming up with the list.

"Does this mean we get writing credits when you release the song?" asked Samantha.

"Yeah, why not.....", and on the next sheet, scribbled down everyone's names, lest she forget one.

"So, what's the tune gonna sound like then?" asked Rob.

"Good question! And the answer is that I have no idea. I have lots of words plus a few bits of music in my mind, but nothing 'joined together' yet. Heck, I don't even know what the actual lyrics will be like... I just know it's gonna be about friends and friendship. Tell you what though, want to hear a couple of songs that I've written?"

"Oh, yes please...." replied Rob.

"So, I'm guessing you already know 'Braces Buddies'? Carol sort of started that one off, so whilst I didn't write it all, I did quite a bit of it. Anyway, these are ones that I certainly came up with the initial ideas for the words and music.... This one is called 'On the Plane'... inspired by our rather long trip over to Korea a few months ago...".

They all listened as Linda played them 3 songs from her phone.

"So, is that what you're recording this week then?" asked Mary.

"Yeah, and several others too. We pretty much finished 'On the Plane' and 'Kicking Out' today, I guess we'll be finishing off 'Put that phone down!' tomorrow or maybe next week." Linda explained to them how their songs used to get written, with the music mostly by Jenny, and Carol and Dianne historically doing the words. "But since I started writing, it's been interesting."

"Has it upset the others with you writing stuff?" asked Vivian.

"No, I think it's actually inspired the others."

"I notice that those song you just played us, they sound... how do I describe it? More upbeat than your current stuff?" added Vivian.

"Yeah, my music tastes are a bit different than Jenny, Carol and Dianne. Ben's love of Indie Rock changed the band's music style, but I think my stuff might be taking it up another notch... or three."

"Oh, what sort of stuff do you like then?"

"Heavier rock. Kawaii, all that sort of weird stuff."

"Kawaii?" asked Richard.

"Japanese girl rock" explained Zac. "Like BabyMetal..."

"Who?"

"Hang on..." Zac got his phone out, then played BabyMetal performing 'Gimme Chocolate'.

"I'd love to have a go at playing that with the Kami Band" said Linda

"Kami Band?"

"Sorry, they're the backing band for BabyMetal... Oh, yeah, I forgot, I'm also writing some sort-of rock stuff for an anime..."

"No way! That is so cool!"

"Yeah, but please don't say anything about it, the project is still pretty hush-hush.

After an amazing evening out with her friends, she got an Uber back to 'the mansion'. Jenny and Carol had already gone up to bed, leaving Callum and Dianne watching TV in the small TV room.

"Hey, have a nice evening?" asked Callum.

"Yeah I did. Hey, Callum you're two years younger than Jenny, aren't you, so I'm guessing you were in the year below me?"

"That's right..."

"Ever know a guy called 'Zac'?"

"OMG, Zac... about the same height as me, with curly hair? I think he did art and graphics.... He wasn't one of my close friends, but I certainly remember him. Having a name like Zac probably helps!"

"That sounds like him... He was there tonight, I completely forgot that you were a year younger than us, or I'd have asked him if he remembered you."

"Sounds to me that Linda has a bit of a crush..." said Dianne, teasing. "So, when you seeing him again?"

"We chatted, but I didn't take it any further, but he is rather nice... Hey, I'm gonna get some hot milk, you guys want one?". They both declined, so Linda went and made herself a hot milk. She would normally have grabbed a cookie to go with the milk, but was still feeling full from the meal.

Back in the TV room, they chatted a bit more, then all went to bed. Up in her room, Linda's mind went back to the words she had written earlier on, so got the paper out of her bag. As she stared at the words, she started to get tiny fragments of music popping into her brain again.

It was about 5am when Callum woke up, and needed a drink, so went down to the kitchen to get one. He noticed that the lights that led to the music room were still on, and was going to just turn them off, but decided he should check the music room - maybe one of the girls had come down, and left the lights in there on too.

The music room was silent as he walked in, but then he spotted Linda leaning over the desk (PC to her left, small audio mixer to her right) and fast asleep. He went over to her, and gently nudged her. She grunted.

"Looks like you were planning an all-nighter, but failed!" he said.

"Oh, smeg, what time is it?"

"Just after 5... how long you been asleep?"

"Probably no more than 30 minutes. I couldn't sleep, I had words and music in my head..."

"Yeah, caught Jenny down here a few times with the same problem, although she generally managed to make it through till daylight..." commented Callum, smiling.

"Yeah, but had she been out and eaten a load of Chinese food beforehand?"

"Fair comment... no! So, what's the song about then?"

"It's about friends...." and she explained what had happened at the restaurant.

"You gonna play it to me then?"

"I wish I could... I've kinda written it down, but it's gonna take us all to play it."

"What you mean?"

"Well, the way I'm imagining it right now, it's gonna start of as a solo voice, become an older-style CJD song, move into being a newer CJDL sort of song, then go fully-blown rock... if that makes sense?"

"It does, sort of. I'll look forward to hearing it for real. In the meantime, I'd suggest you might want to get up to bed and get at least 3 hours sleep so you're in a vaguely fit state to get into the studios tomorrow!"

Chapter 6

So, they were in the studios again on the Friday, before taking the weekend off. Whilst they managed to record one more song in the morning, Linda had told the others about her new song, and despite Linda's lack of sleep, they actually spent some time in the afternoon working on it. The others had really liked the idea of how the song started off gentle, and ended up full-on rock, and wanted to record it while they were in the studios.

Also with them in the studios was a camera-lady (Paula) and her assistant (Sanjay) who worked for BD Media Production: that was the company which had taken all the video they had recorded when in Korea, and made the 3 programs out of it. This time, whilst the girls would be taking bits of video too, BD Media had provided a cameraman - in fact a lady - who would be filming them not only on tour, but also in the lead up to the tour. And while actually ON tour, there may well be a second cameraman working with them too!

So, our cameraman had been filming the girls in the recording studios, and the assistant had been coordinating getting audio recordings of what they did in the studios, as well as making sure the camera's remote mic was in a useful place at all times. He also had a couple of portable audio recorders to use as well.

Whilst our girls were used to Paige and Callum filming them, it had taken them a day or two to get used to Paula and Sanjay: the good news is that they had both done something similar before, and were very good at keeping out of the way!

By the time they eventually finished on the Friday, Linda was a bit exhausted, and she was glad to finally get back home again. And when I say home, I mean her own flat. Her lovely cleaning lady had been and tidied up, as well as making sure there was some fresh milk in the fridge, and a few other bits. For the last several weeks, she had been spending the weekdays at 'the mansion', and just the weekends at her flat, so having someone who could come in to keep an eye on things was so essential. Maybe next week, when they were again going to be in the recording studios, she might decide to spend a few more nights in her own bed. The good news is that the week after, when they finished recording, they were all taking a week off. One of the many things Linda needed to do was to go shopping for some new clothes, for when they were on tour. While they were rehearsing & recording, it didn't really matter what they wore. She had a few 'decent' clothes: she's worn those for example over in Korea, and when they were up in Birmingham and Leicester, and on TV, but if they were going to be on the road for 3 months plus, she needed a load more!

Anyway, back to tonight... Linda was really pleased with her new song: created on Thursday night, mainly written in the early hours this morning, and worked on during the day, it had come together well. Yu-Eye's input had been very positive too: in a very short time, the four girls had come to trust Yu-Eye's abilities. They would need to work on the song a bit more next week, and they would hopefully record it ... so from first ideas to recorded in under a week - not bad going!

Linda was in her lounge, drinking a cup of hot milk - and to be honest, about ready to fall asleep - when her phone rang: it was her mum.

"Hi Mum!"

"Hi Sweetheart! Just thought I'd double-check that you were still planning on coming over for lunch tomorrow?"

"Oh, 100% definitely, assuming I can get up in time!" She quickly explained that they had been recording all week, plus she's had close to no sleep last night. "I'll call you just before I leave, but I'm definitely coming. It's gonna be nice to have a tiny break, and do something a bit different. Is Tommy going to be there?" Tommy, or Thomas to give him his full name, was Linda's elder brother.

Hmm, maybe time to tell you (= invent!!) a bit more about Linda. So, she's currently 24, a year younger that the others in the band, her brother is 3 years older, at 27. They used to live in Sutton (so it was easy to get to college over in Croydon), but her parents had moved out to the Epsom area 4 years ago. Tommy had left home the year before they moved: he works in Brighton, so it's not that hard for him to travel back home to visit their parents. Oh, and has a girlfriend.

Linda's rented apartment was down in Purley, just a couple of miles from Croydon: with a good train service to London, it was a good (and relatively cheap) place to be to get into London and other places when she was a session musician. As we discovered earlier, Linda would like to buy a place, slightly bigger, maybe even a house (to be honest, she rather likes the place that Jenny lives, and would be happy to find something similar!), but she hasn't really had the time to start looking. She doesn't even know yet where she wants to live.

When Linda finally fell asleep, she felt pretty good about life: there was absolutely no doubt left in her mind that she really WAS a member of CJDL, and no longer 'the new girl'. Choosing Yu-Eye to produce their album had been absolutely the correct decision. And she had just written a song that EVERYONE seemed to like. And tomorrow, she's be seeing her mum, dad, and brother.!

Chapter 7

Linda had a really good weekend: not only did she manage to catch up on her sleep, but she really enjoyed spending time on the Saturday with her family. She hadn't seen her brother for a while, so she was able to tell him about all the recent changes in her life. It was also rather pleasant to just be able to 'chill out' for a while, forgetting about writing and playing music for a bit.

After having the weekend off, they 4 girls spent the Monday morning working on the new song again whilst in the studios: they only had 4 more tracks to record, and they had all the second week to do that, if they needed it. Yes, earlier I did say they could have probably done it all in just one week, but they had decided to take things a bit more gently, as well as working with Yu-Eye who had helped them 'polish up' what they had written. As 4 girls who enjoyed performing their music, they enjoyed working in a recording studio, if only because they enjoyed seeing what the other people there thought of what they were doing.

For Paula, the cameraman, this was a bit more interesting to film: while they were in the actual recording studio, she had set up several portable cameras in there, but remained with her main camera on a fixed tripod outside the studio. Now she was in the studio with them, with her the camera on her shoulder, and was able to get closer to the girls, without the glass getting in the way.

"How about we start to record 'Friends' while it's in our minds? suggested Linda. "So who wants to do the solo at the start?"

"Why don't you do it, Linda?" suggested Yu-Eye. "Every time I've heard you sing it, it has sounded really good. I'm just wondering, with it starting acapella, quite how to go about recording it though..."

"We could just play it live, and Dave can record just the vocals, then we can use that as a sort of 'index track', and then layer the instruments under it... then finaly re-do all the vocals?"

"Yes, that might work, want to give it a try?". Linda did a countdown, and started to sing, the others joining in a few moments after. Dave recorded just the vocals as they played the song through. Because it wasn't an actual recording, Paula was able to get some great shots of them playing. Then the girls started to lay down the instrumental tracks against the initial vocal track: again, because there were no vocals being recorded, Paula stayed in the studios with the girls. To be honest, she was almost silent, and could probably have remained with them when they actually sang, but it had been agreed that she would be outside during the actual takes...

Before re-recording the vocals properly, they sat in the control room having a short break, while Dave played them what they had so far: instruments plus the original vocal track.

"You know, actually listening to it like that, it doesn't sound too bad. Yu-Eye, you happy with the backing?"

"Generally, yes, although there's a couple of bits we might want to re-do... but let's get the vocals done first. So, how many takes are you going to need today then?" said Yu-Eye smiling, and referring back to when they added their vocals to 'Sexy Yellow Roller Skates' in Korea, in just 2 takes.

"Well, I'm planning on MINE being perfect first time!" joked Linda, "But I can't answer for these three!". This was the way the four girls often worked together - a bit of leg-pulling, a bit of friendly competition - all of which kept the mood light, but more importantly, got them in the sort of mood to play and sing well. In the right sort of relaxed mood, they could indeed record a song in just a couple of takes.

Six takes later, they were happy with the vocals: later on, Clive - the guy driving the recording desk and recording PC, would actually merge the vocals from two or maybe three of the takes, to get a better end result. So now, they worked on tweaking the couple of bits of backing music.

Chapter 8

They finished recording their last track late on the Wednesday evening, which gave Yu-Eye 2 days of full studio time that she and the recording engineer could use to edit down their recordings. Whilst the studio wouldn't free after that, the engineer was booked to spend up to another week working elsewhere on the editting with Yu-Eye.

Linda had slept at her own place for the last few nights: it was good to be at her own place. But, whilst the recording was now all done, there were many other things to discuss, so they had agreed to all stay at the house on the Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Thursday morning - so a week after the evening out with her friends - Linda called up Mary, to see if she, and any of the others, would like to meet up again, completely on Linda. They decided that the following Tuesday could be a good evening to meet up, and that Mary would ring around the others, and persuade them to come. Linda didn't say anything about recording the 'Friends' song as she wanted to surprise them all by playing them the final version when they were all together.

Amongst the many things that happened on the Thursday was meeting with the couple who would both be dancing and working out the choreography for the dance group. Whilst much of the time, the four (or eight) girls would be playing instruments, and thus unable to dance, there would be two or three opportunities when they could get Northern Girls to be their 'backing band' allowing them to sing... and possibly dance along with the dancers.

They had cleared part of the music room, and had spent a couple of hours demonstrating their abilities: the two weeks of dance training over in Korea had been so worth it!

Friday morning, as Linda awoke, she remembered having a strange dream: she was standing next to a large and beautiful horse: mainly chestnut, but with a few small white patches on it's face. It was being a bit feisty, and despite knowing close to nothing about horses, she went over to it, said a few gentle words and stroked it, and it calmed right down.

Someone then helped her to get up onto the horse, which she did surprisingly easily. Then someone got on behind her. Putting their hands gently around her, their voice said "Don't worry, I'm with you all the way. Now, today, you're going to lead the others..." She looked around, and saw a group of other riders on horse... they looked vaguely familiar. She gently picked up the reins, and shook them: the horse seemed to know exactly what she wanted, and rode off, leading the others. After riding down a path through some woods, they came out into a field, with a path leading across it. They soon came to the far edge of the field, where there was a hedge, and the horse wasn't slowing down: if anything, it was going faster! "It's ok, just trust your ride....." said the voice behind her. The horse effortlessly jumped over the hedge, landing smoothly. Next, Linda saw a small stream ahead: without being told this time, she decided to just 'trust her ride', and with almost no effort, they were over the stream. After that was open country, and she shook the reins, telling the horse to speed up, which it did.... it was one of those glorious sunny days, with her hair streaming behind her in the breeze.... and that was when she had woken up.

She remembered that she'd had another very similar dream a bit ago, except that time she hadn't felt brave enough to talk to the horse... she had felt decidedly nervous. But, like today, someone else was with her, behind her, encouraging her. That time one of the other riders had led the group, with Linda at the back of the group, but with the encouragement of the voice behind her, she managed to control her ride, having a nice time, and ended up feeling good about herself.

She wondered why she had had these two similar dreams, and realised that on both times, the night before she had been feeling quite worried and apprehensive about the upcoming tour. This tour was different in many ways from the previous tour. For a start, she was now actually part of the group, so she would be very much more 'on public view'. And it was going to be quite a long tour, more specifically, she was going to be away from home, away from England, for some time. Away from familiarity. And, of couse, they would be playing several of the songs she had written. Including 'Friends', which she would be starting off, completely unaccompanied: mix in a few stage nerves, and it was a disaster asking to happen.

Linda felt that the dream was trying to say something to her, if only 'don't worry, you'll be ok!'. If nothing else, her worries from last night had gone, and she was feeling a load more positive about the upcoming tour, even though there was still so much to work out.

Mary called back on the Friday, mid-afternoon. Almost everyone was up for getting together again...

"Terry says she's not going to be able make it on Tuesday. However, last time Jane wasn't able to come along, so would it be ok to invite her? I'm sure she'd love to see you again!"

"No problem with that, sure, invite her along!"

"So, how's the recording going?" asked Mary.

"We've actually finished: the whole new album is done. I'll tell you all more about it next week....". of course, Linda gave nothing away, wanting to keep it all - including playing them 'Friends', which they had inspired - a secret and a surprise.

Whilst 'Northern Girls' weren't due to arrive for another week or so, there was still a lot to be done, so they were all doing stuff at the 'mansion' on the Saturday, then on Sunday morning, they all went along to Jenny's church.

The following week they had decided to have a bit of time off: 'the calm before the storm' if you like. So Linda was actually at home on the Monday. Mid-morning, Brian had received a call from David in A&R at their record company, so Brian had arranged a conference call for them all: Yu-Eye had sent David early mixes of their recording sessions, and he had some feedback. For a start, he felt that there were too many tracks for the album, and that two of the tracks didn't really 'fit' with the others, so would they be ok with them not being included? And if they were, would they be interested in letting another of their artists use one of those songs?

With that agreed, Linda got a bit of a shock...

"So, that 'Friends' track - absolutely love it! How would you feel about it being the group's next single?" asked David.

"You kidding me?" replied Linda.

"Not at all... why?"

"Well, I only wrote it the week before last..."

"And it sounds like it was written with a LOT of feeling... Plus it has a very 'fresh' feeling to it's style, and we all think it will do well."

Ok, let's be realistic, this is CJDL we're talking about: it would be a MAJOR shock to everyone if it didn't at least chart in the top 5, and it would most likely hit number 1. From Linda's perspective, she would earn the same whether it was her song, or whether one of the others had written it - all royaties were split 4 ways. But this was the first song that SHE had written for the group completely on her own. It would be HER number one!

So, it was agreed that it would be their next single, and it would be released the week before their tour started. They could video one of their rehearsals as the initial video, but then replace it with a live performance from their tour.

With the conference call finished, Linda realised that this bit of news rather changed what she'd be telling her friends on Tuesday. In fact, she felt it should be a fancier celebration completely. Linda remembered a while ago when they all went out for a meal at a nice restaurant, where they had their own dining room upstairs: it wasn't cheap, but it was rather nice.

She called Dianne. "Hey, Dianne, remember a few months ago we all went out to that nice French restaurant... can you remember its name?"

"Wasn't it 'Le Pavillion Bistro', or similar?"

"Yes, I think you're right!"

"Looking to take a fella there, are you?"

"Actually, no... I was going to take my friends out, to kinda thank them for inspiring me to write 'Friends', and was thinking that taking them out for an Indian meal wasn't really good enough... so decided it would be nice to give them a REAL treat. Hey, what you doing tomorrow night, want to come along too?"

"Well, I'm not doing anything.... you sure you want me along?"

"Of course, and I have no doubt the others will enjoy meeting you. Hey, do remember a guy called... erm... Alex? He was in your year at college."

"Name's not instantly ringing a bell, but maybe I'll recognise him when I see him. So, if we're going to 'Le Pavillion', I'm assuming we're dressing up a bit?"

Good point, and yes! I'd better let Mary know, so she can tell everyone. Of course, I need to confirm if they have space for us first! Do you think I should organise taxis to get us there... we'll be meeting in Croydon again."

"If you REALLY want to impress them, why not see if you can get a Limo? It's a Tuesday, so they probably won't charge you all that much..."

Linda smiled: yes, a limo WOULD be fun!

My mistake. You are right, all eight girls.

And maybe there might be a few audience members with braces too.

And maybe a couple of crew members.

Chapter 9

Linda called the restaurant.

"Hi, this is Linda, I'm with CJDL, the pop group.". Whilst she wouldn't normally use her position to 'get favours', sometimes 'needs must'! "Look, last month we had a great meal at your place, so a couple of questions: are you open tomorrow? Can you fit in 12 of us? And any chance we could use the upstairs room like we did before?"

The voice on the phone said 'yes' to all three questions... "No problems! We'll look forward to seeing you again tomorrow at about 8 o'clock!". Linda suspected had it been later in the week, she may have had issues, but Tuesdays are always quiet for restaurants.

Next, she had a word with Brian, then called the company they had used several times for cars, mini-coaches and limos. Yes, they could provide a large limo that would fit 12 of them in.

Finally, she called Mary.

"Hey, Linda, I guess you're gonna give me details for tomorrow?"

"Yeah, although there's a slight change of plan, which I'm sure you'll all like, but it does mean that everyone will need to be dressed reasonably smartly... so no jeans, T-shirts or scruffy trainers.... Feel free to dress up as nice as you like!"

"Ooooh, this is sounding good, what's going on, Linda?"

"My surprise... all will be revealed tomorrow. So, meet at 'The Ship' sometime between 7 and 7:30 - drinks on me, of course - we'll be going off to the restaurant soon after 7:30, so tell people not to be late!"

Mary tried to pump Linda for more information, but Linda managed to stand her ground, not telling Mary a thing.

------

Linda got a call from Jimmy, who would be their driver for the evening: she arranged with him that he would arrive outside the pub a little after 7:30: it would take about 20 minutes to get to the restaurant, so they would be there by 8.

Linda's Uber arrived, and they went and collected Dianne. Like Linda, she had dressed up 'like a pop star': they were definitely going to have fun this evening.

"No headgear tonight then?" asked Linda, clearly joking.

"No thank you, not even my lip-bumper!" replied Dianne.

"Now you've got them, you seem to be getting on ok with having braces.." commented Linda.

"Yeah, once again I seem to have accepted braces as part of who I am for the moment. But that's no excuse for any of you to get them off! How's your treatment going?"

"Gently but surely."

"Any problems with your tad's?"

"No, my tongue is used to where they are, and the attached elastics too. Hey, give me a proper look at your mouth...". Linda spent a moment looking at Dianne's teeth. "You know, they are doing well, I can definitely see a difference!".

"Yeah, I don't normally notice it, but I took a look at my 'before' pics the other day, and I can already see a slight difference. What with your support, and seeing my progress, I'm actually feeling a lot more positive about them!"

"Hey, remember to bring your braces kit?" asked Linda.

"But of course! I did manage to forget it one evening at the weekend though, so ended up doing what I could with just swishing around..."

Linda was glad that Dianne was feeling better about having braces: she seemed to be very good about wearing her upper facebow and lip-bumper in private, and she knew that Dianne would appreciate having nice straight teeth again.

"Hey, I wonder how the Northern Girls are getting on with their braces?"

"Good point. I hope they keep them for the tour. I mean, having eight of us in braces would be a great talking point!"

The taxi pulled up outside the pub: the journey had been very smooth, so Linda made sure to give the driver a good tip. As they got out of the car, a few eyes turned to look at them: as I said, they were VERY dressed up this evening! Even more eyes turned as they went into the pub, and walked up to the bar. As they did so, Linda looked around the bar: it was still quiet, and she didn't see any of her friends there yet. Linda recognised the guy who had served them before, so smiled at him, letting him see her braces.... maybe it would help him to remember her.

"Hi, can I set up a tab? I've got a few friends coming in soon...." asked Linda, passing her credit card over to him.

"Sure, no problem! What would you like to drink?"

"You have any bottles of bubbly?"

"Prosecco?"

"Anything nicer?": Linda wanted to give her friends a bit of a treat.

The barman went out the back, returning with a cold bottle, telling Linda the (fairly high) price.

"That's fine, hopefully you have a couple more, I'm sure we'll need them! And a dozen glasses?". The barman, realising that this was a quick and high-value sale, was very helpful, even getting one of the other bar staff to take the glasses over to a table for them.

As they walked over to their table - actually one of three next to each other - they could see people looking at them, pointing, whispering. Whilst it wasn't yet 7pm, there were a couple of dozen people in the pub.

"Hey, fancy doing a bit of band PR?" suggested Linda.

"Yeah, why not!" replied Dianne. Linda stood up, then picked up the second - and as yet unopened - bottle of bubbly, banging it down loudly on the table a couple of times. The pub went almost silent.

"If I can have your attention for a moment!? Now, we're noticing a lot whispering behind hands and pointing.... and the pointing seems to be at us two. Yes, I'm Linda, and this is Dianne, we're half of CJDL. So that's 5 points for each of our names, and a bonus 5 points if you got the 'CJDL' right too.... but if you only said 'CJD', then I reckon that has to be 5 points OFF!"

Linda's light-hearted words raised a few smiles and giggles around the room.

"Look, we're waiting for our old college friends to arrive... we were both at Croydon College - Dianne was in the year above me...  so in the meantime, if you'd like to come over and say 'hello', even take a selfie, then that fine with us!"

"Don't forget the bar staff!" said Dianne.

"Good point there, Dianne: bar staff, get yourselves organised, and we'll come over to you for a picture. I'm sure your boss won't complain at the free publicity!"

Chapter 10

Over the next few minutes, several of the punters came over and said 'hello' and took selfies, and they were just organising a picture with the staff when Mary walked in with Ross, Samantha and Richard.

"OMG, you guys look really amazing, I could almost believe that you two are famous pop stars!" said Mary, making Linda smile.

"Help yourselves to the bubbly on the table over there!" called out Linda. With the pictures taken, Linda and Dianne joined them at the table. "I thought it would be simpler and more fun to just get some bubbly for us all, but if you want something else, just put it on my tab at the bar. So, this is Dianne, the 'D' to my being 'L' in the band. Dianne, this is Mary, her other half Ross, and Samantha and Richard!"

Over the next ten minutes the rest of the group arrived. They had all done as asked, and dressed up nicely for the evening.

"Now, Dianne, do you recognise Alex, he was in your year?"

"Yeah, vaguely, but I remember THIS lady pretty well! Hello there, Jane!"

"Hello there, Linda and Foxy!"

"Hey, Jane, nice to see you again! Foxy?" asked Linda.

"Yeah, that what a few of us used to call her at college! OMG, I'm trying to remember your ACTUAL name!"

"Dianne..."

"Ah, yes, of course! Thinking about it, it would need to be one of C, J or D, wouldn't it?" said Jane, smiling... and revealing a lovely set of small metal braces, along with a pair of elastics. Dianne picked up on it first.

"Hey, you're another Braces Buddy! said Dianne with a lovely wide smile, showing off her braces.

"Erm, yes, I guess I am...". It took a moment for her to make the connection. "Oh, yes, your last single, of course!"

"Braces Buddies... Braces Buddies" Linda started to sing. Dianne joined in for a quick chorus, causing a few people to applaud when they stopped.

"Linda, I didn't spot them, but you've got braces too!"

"We all have them, all four of us..."

"Ummm... any particular reason why?"

"Well, we all sort-of need them, but mainly to support Dianne."

"How do you 'sort-of' need braces?

"Well, Jenny already had them. Carol had been wearing her retainers again, to sort out an errant tooth, so I guess she's the one who needs them least. I have a slight problem - sufficiently slight that I hadn't bothered getting them fixed before. And Dianne... well, she had a definite need for them! But was a little apprehensive about getting them. To be honest, we were prompted by the four girls in Northern Girls, they all have braces too, to support Meg, she wasn't keen on having braces either."

"And I spent AGES agonising on whether I should get braces, and what sort... and you guys just get them to 'support a friend'! I'm not sure if that is sad or great! But why are yours so much bigger than mine, and so much more obvious?"

"Well, it wouldn't matter WHAT sort of braces we'd got, the press would have quickly picked up on them... and we're planning on having fun with these..." explained Linda.

Vivian walked over to them. "Umm... Vivian isn't it?" asked Dianne.

"Well remembered, yes, it's been a while, great to see you again, Dianne. You and Jenny and Carol were always the favourites in the music department!" commented Vivian.

"Yeah, sorry about that, but it stood us all in good stead, didn't it?"

Everyone was enjoying chatting as well as drinking the bubbly - and yes, they DID need that third bottle. Linda's phone buzzed: it was Jimmy texting Linda to say he was outside, waiting in the 'taxi'. Linda got up. "Ok everyone, you're on a 2 minute warning to finish your drinks, while I go and pay..." After paying the bar bill, she announced: "Right, so there's a taxi outside waiting for us!"

"That's gonna be a big taxi for all of us!"

"I believe it will be....". With their drinks finished, Linda led the way outside.

"You are KIDDING?" said Mary.

"Wow, that is so cool" added Vivian.

"So, say hello to Jimmy, he's our driver for tonight." Jimmy, dressed as you might expect a chauffeur to be dressed, complete with peaked cap, opened the door, and they all started to get into the rather large limo, saying 'hello' to Jimmy as they did so.

"Linda, what's going on?" asked Mary. "I mean, first the bubbly, now a fancy car....?"

"All will be revealed soon, when we get to the restaurant. While I remember, on the way back later on, Jimmy can either drop you back at the pub, or if there's somewhere else - like home or the car park - that you'd like to be, that's fine, just let him know."

"So, where are we going? I'm guessing it's not in Croydon, if we're needing the 'taxi'?" asked Jane.

"Yeah, it's a bit closer to the West End, it's a little bistro we've been to a couple of times, I hope you like it!". Linda was not letting on, however many questions her friends asked. Whilst Dianne clearly knew what was happening, she was keeping quiet, enjoying watching the fun all of Linda's friends were having. It was very clear that they had no idea quite how 'up-market' the place they were going to was!

Chapter 11

Finally, the limo stopped. "Ok, ladies, we have arrived" said James over the intercom system. He got out and opened the limo's door, letting them all get out. Linda walked over to the door of the restaurant, where the 'Maitre d'' was waiting.

"Good evening madam. Good evening everyone. I'm assuming this is the Jacobson party?"

"That's right!"

"Please, come in, and follow Jules up to the private dining room...". Linda's friends were clearly surprised by how up-market the place was, and clearly NOT the sort of place any of them might normally come to. Mind you, if we were honest, Linda would have been equally shocked a mere 12 months ago.

As they entered the private dining room, other members of staff helped everone to sit down. Linda made sure she was opposite Zac. Dianne was a couple of seats along from her.

"There's no prices on the menu..." Linda heard someone commenting.

"Yes, that's because if you can afford to eat here, then the prices don't really matter!" replied Linda with a slight smile. "So, I hope none of you had any food before coming out, as I was planning on us having 3 courses... and I warn you, the desserts here are seriously nice! Choose what you like, and feel free to experiment, all the food here is good! I'll order some wine for us all, but if you'd prefer a beer, or something else, then just let one of the staff know."

By now, Linda's friends were realising that Linda was giving them a serious treat tonight, so there must be a good reason - but what?

While everyone decided what they wanted from the menu, Linda had connected her phone to the bluetooth of the 'entertainment system' in the room. The waiter went around taking their food order.

"Ok, so I'm guessing you want to know why I've invited you all to join me here tonight. Well, it's a bit of a 'thank-you' to be honest. We've been in the recording studios the last couple of weeks... We actually finished recording our new album last Wednesday. Plus we ended up recording one extra song that we hadn't originally intended to. So, while we wait for our starters to arrive, here's a couple of our new songs, the first one is called 'Elegant Lady': I did the initial writing for it, but Jenny, Dianne and Carol all helped to 'tweak' it too. You are the first people outside of us and the record company to hear it, although the final version might be a tiny bit different, by the time our producer has finished with it!"

Everyone listened silently as the three songs played, then clapped and cheered, clearly enjoying them. The staff took that as a cue to bring in their starters.

"So," continued Linda when most of them had finished their starters, "we were in our first week of recording, the Thursday before last, when I joined you guys for dinner. And you may remember these....". Linda pulled out the notes she had taken that evening, as they had worked out words that meant 'friends'. "You'll remember I kinda 'took a trip to mars' or maybe it was over the pacific somewhere.... anyway, I was thinking about friends, and how important you guys are to me. And you all helped think of more words that mean friends, so these are the notes I took, plus a few extra bits I added." She put the notes onto the table for everyone to see.

"When I got home, I had a cup of hot milk, but couldn't settle, as I had words and a tune starting to buzz around in my head. So, I went downstairs into our music room, and started working on the song." She pulled out more bits of paper, and passed them around. "These are the notes I made. It was rather late when I .....". Linda paused momentarily to work out what to say.

"When she fell asleep!" interrupted Dianne, to a round of laughter. "It seems that Callum - that's Jenny's brother - went in at around 5am, to find Linda slumped over the desk, sleeping! She couldn't even pull an all-nighter!". There was more laughter and a little bit of jeering as well as clapping.

"Yeah, ok, guilty, I fell asleep! In my defense, I'd had a pretty big - and nice - meal earlier in the evening! So, yeah, I managed to get a few hours sleep, and then it was back into the studios...."

"I think you were probably running on coffee that morning, weren't you?" retorted Dianne. All of this was, of course, 100% in jest. But also true. As Linda continued to talk, the staff had come in, and were taking away the dirty plates from their starters.

"You're probably right! So later on the Friday I explained the song to the others, and we started to play it, then after the weekend - where I caught up on my sleep - we spent Monday morning working on the song again, and recorded it in the afternoon."

"I should add," said Dianne, "Linda had explained to us what the song was all about, and we all thought it was a great song, and so wanted to 'make it work'."

Linda smiled: noone had actually said that to her. "So, you guys inspired me to write that song: I bet you'd like to hear it?". There was a big shout of 'yeah!'. They loved the fact that Linda had incorporated all of their names into the song somewhere. After playing the song, Linda continued. "But that wasn't the end of the story: yesterday morning our manager, Brian, had a call from the record company, which turned into a conference call with us all there. The first thing they explained was that they felt that the album was actually 2 songs too long, and there were two songs that didn't quite fit, so that was a pretty easy decision, wasn't it, Dianne?"

"Yeah, it's always hard to 'let go' of any song, but they are hoping to let one of their other artists use one of those songs. But the more important bit is the next bit, that I can see Linda is bursting to tell you..."

"Yeah, they asked us how we would feel about 'Friends' being our next single!". There was a big cheer from everyone. "And that's when I decided that I needed to do something a bit extra special for you guys tonight! Oh, and you'll all be listed as 'inspired by' for the song!"

Just then, the staff arrived with their main courses...

Chapter 12

"So, how is my favourite anti-fan today?" Linda asked Zac as they started to eat their mains. (If you remember, at their previous dinner, Zac had admitted that he wasn't over-keen on girl-bands)

"Well, I've been learning a bit more about you guys, and listening to some of your music. I mean, it used to be very much 'girl-band' stuff, but it suddenly changed... any particular reason for that?". As he spoke, he was looking at Linda.

"Love..."

"Love?"

"Yeah, love. Jenny met Ben, and fell head-over-heels for him. He likes indie-rock and that sort of stuff - his favourite band is Darkest Knights - so she started listening to some of their stuff, and the way she describes it is something like 'my head exploded with ideas!'. That's when they employed me..."

"Employed you? I thought you were a member of the band?"

"I am now, but I used to be a session musician, and they needed another guitar player, so I went to work for them on a one to two week trial... which became three then four weeks... It was near the end of their tour a few months later they asked me to join them..."

"I read they were at our college too, so did you know them when you went to 'work' for them?"

"When my agent first asked me if I was interested, I didn't, but as soon as I met them, and we started talking, I realised exactly who they were, and yeah, who couldn't have been aware of them, the 'blue eyed girls' in the year above us. Ah, of course, you're a year younger, aren't you, so you probably won't have known about them."

"Did that help you at all?"

"I think it did, yeah." Linda and Zac chatted as they ate, and others joined in the conversation too.

"It's odd, but even though we all get on so well, at times I still feel like I'm a bit of a 'fraud', an 'outsider' pushing in..." said Linda.

Dianne paused eating, got up, stood behind Linda, putting her hands on her shoulders.

"Oh, Linda... Linda... Linda... You are definitely NOT an 'outsider' or a 'fraud'. Maybe you were a bit of an outsider for the first few weeks, but not much more than that. You have helped steer us so much: when you first joined us, you were helping us to develop our songs. Then you co-wrote 'Braces Buddies', then you produced it for us: I mean, that one ONLY made number one. And the stuff you've written recently: neither we nor the record company would have wanted to include them on the new album if they were no good, but they all made the album. And that's before I even mention 'Friends'! And an outsider wouldn't have got braces to support a band-mate either!" Dianne paused briefly. "Linda, you are SO MUCH one of us. You're not just a band-mate, or even just a friend, you are family!"

As Dianne had been speaking, tears had started to well up in Linda's eyes. She stood up, and put her arms around Dianne, holding her close, and as she did so, Linda's friends were showing their appreciation too.

"By the way, have you noticed how much less stressed Jenny has been since you started writing stuff? She's so happy that she has someone to share the music writing workload with..."

As they continued eating, they chatted about this and that. Linda and Zac seemed to be getting on well, but I suspect that both were a bit apprehensive about maybe getting together on another occasion. From Zac's perspective, I can see that he was probably a bit apprehensive simply because of who Linda WAS. As for why Linda didn't suggest something.... well, I guess that's just Linda!

So, Dianne and Linda were alone in the Limo, on the way to Dianne's place: Dianne had invited Linda to stay over. They had dropped all of the others off: some wanted a lift home, others got dropped off in town near where they had parked their cars. Everyone had had a really great evening, very much enjoying hearing the new CJDL tracks before anyone else! And also very chuffed that they had actually INSPIRED Linda to write a song about them! Not many people get that happen!

"Here, you probably want this..." said Dianne, passing Linda a piece of paper.

"What's that?"

"It's Zac's phone number, I thought you'd probably need it!"

"You know, I'm not sure if he really likes me all that much."

"Oh, come on, didn't you see how he was always looking at you, and how he was hanging on your every word?". Dianne thought about adding 'actually, looking a lot at your mouth', but thought better of it.

"Oh... ok... so why didn't he say anything to me?"

"Oh come on Linda. you're a STAR now, people get a bit intimidated by stars. Ok, let's imagine some mega-big sexy male pop star jumped into the car with us, how would you feel?"

"Um.. yeah ok... but he seemed ok talking with me..."

"It's a big jump from just chatting where you are both already in the same place, to go to 'would you like to go on a date with me?'. So give him a call, be gentle, and ask him out for a drink or lunch or something. Or go see a movie together..."

Linda had a very content look on her face.

Chapter 13

Linda had thoroughly enjoyed being able to treat her friends last night. Not cheap, but you can't really put a £ value on friends, can you?

Linda had stayed with Dianne until lunchtime, then got an Uber back to her place. Hmm, that was something she really must start doing after they came off tour: look for a nicer place to live. Somewhere with a bit more space for a start.

Linda's personal phone rang: a number was displayed, but she didn't recognise it.

"Hello?" she said, a bit warily.

"Hello, I'm hoping that I'm speaking to Linda Jacobson?"

"Who is this?"

"Oh, I'm sorry, I'm Trevor Nelson, I work for 'Behind the Pipes Productions', we're the production company that makes TV shows like 'Singer Behind the Mask'. Are you alone, and can you spare me 5 to 10 minutes of your time?". Linda was at home, very alone, and was in the middle of doing close to nothing.

"Ummm... yes, and probably..." replied a slightly disbelieving Linda, worrying that this could be some sort of prank call.

"Now, before I go any further, I suspect that you are very wary of my calling like this, thinking it may be a prank, or maybe I'm from the press. So, do you have internet access there? I'd like you to check us out, and call me back..."

"Yes, I have internet access...."

"Ok, so go and google 'Singer Behind the Mask', and find out who it's made by, then go to the website, our website. Down the bottom of the page is a 'Contact Us' link, which will give our main phone number: call that public number, and just ask for me. Tilly is on reception today, so she will answer your call, and as soon as you say that you want to speak to me, she will NOT ask who you are. While you're speaking to her, feel free to ask any questions about me or the company.... Does that all make sense? I really hope you'll call me, because I have a proposal that you might be interested in...."

Linda realised that Trevor had been in this situation before: anyone in a similar position to Linda would be quite apprehensive, especially when getting a call on their personal phone.

Did he say 'Singer Behind the Mask'? But surely everyone on that show was either a non-pro singer, or a bit of a has-been.... Well, Linda wasn't busy, and you never know, if she was asked to perform on Singer Behind the Mask', it could be an interesting experience!

"Ok, sure, give me a few minutes will you?"

"Oh, take as long as you need. Just ask for me, Trevor Nelson, when you call.... I'll say goodbye for now, and look forward to your return call."

Linda went over and grabbed her tablet, and googled 'who makes Singer Behind the Mask', to discover it was indeed 'Behind the Pipes Productions'. She scrolled down, and selected 'Contact Us': the next page listed their address, emails, and phone numbers.

Over on her phone she called the main phone number. "Good morning, 'Behind the Pipes Productions'. I'm Tilly, how can I help you today?"

Well, so far so good.

"Hi... I'd like to speak to Trevor Nelson... but before you put me through, can you tell me what it is that he does there?"

"Of course I can. Our company produces many shows, some of which involve members of the public, and some that involve professionals. Trevor is what we call one of our 'Talent Managers', he's responsible for finding people to take part in our shows. Does that help?" asked Tilly.

Linda was quite impressed with both her friendly manner, as well as the simple way she had answered her question. "Yes, it does, thanks Tilly!"

"Would you like me to put you through to him now?"

"Yes please!"

"Half a moment..." The line went silent for a moment.

"Hello... Trevor Nelson!"

"Hello, it's Linda Jacobson here...."

"Hi, Linda, thank you so much for calling back. Ok, so, I just need to check that you're alone there, and that no-one can overhear you?"

"Don't worry, I'm 'home alone' today! So what's with all the mystery?"

"Ok, I'm sure you have heard of the TV show 'Singer Behind the Mask'. Well, it's the time of year when we start to look for people to come on the show...."

"Yeah, about that. Aren't all the singers either non-pro's or 'singers from years ago'? I don't think I fit either of those right now!"

"Historically you would be right, but this time we were thinking that it might be fun to see if we could persuade a couple of 'current stars' onto the show. Clearly you'll be suitably recompensed."

"Ok, I can see that would be interesting for the viewers... and the panel too. But I'm not sure I'll be able to help, we're about to go on a major tour..."

"Absolutely, and I'm very aware of that. But, as I understand it, your tour ends near the end of September?"

"Yes, about the third week of September..."

"We'll not be starting the actual recording until the third week of October, although there will be stuff to do in the weeks before. The recording takes somewhere between two and three weeks. So, plenty of time after your tour finishes... I'm hoping that could work for you?"

"Yes, I guess so... And it airs...?"

"Usually in January. Now, before we go any further, I do need to explain a few 'ground rules'. First of all, just because we are talking now doesn't guarantee that we'll actually want you on the show: we're currently researching who might be interested and available. We need to have loads of internal discussions before we make the final choice. Does that make sense?"

"Yeah, makes a lot of sense. I guess we'd sign contracts once you've decided?"

"That's right. However, in the meantime, I'd like to meet up with you, get you to sign an NDA, and talk some more. I'm sure you've read that everything we do has to be so secret, so the names of our performers don't get out. It's also very important that you don't tell anyone. Yes, if you have a boyfriend or similar that you really MUST tell, then that's ok, but they'll need to sign an NDA too. And if you need a professional legal representative to look at the contract, that's fine too, they are already covered by so many laws that stop them leaking anything! But, if anyone else finds out that you even MIGHT be on the show, then we'll have to drop you. It's a royal pain in the butt, but we have to do it!"

"I've read a couple of those articles about the show, sounds like a secret military operation, but I can understand why."

"Yes, it does feel a bit like that at times. So, the big question: are you at all interested in being on the show??". To be honest, that's what Linda had been thinking about for the last couple of minutes.

"I think so. I probably need to think about it a bit more... you said about meeting up: I'd like to do that, understand more about what would actually be involved."

"That sounds good to me. How busy are you in the next few weeks? Can you find a slot for me?  I'll do my best to fit in with you..."

"Well, next week things start to get busy, what about this week? Maybe even tomorrow?"

"Yes, I can manage tomorrow. Let me text you an address: it will be a very anonymous office in a very anonymous building. And please do anything and everything you can to minimise anyone recognising you."

Linda was lucky that, without all the 'glam' like she had worn last night, she looked surprisingly plain and anonymous, which was really nice for her if she wanted to go out in public.

"Oh, don't worry, I'm pretty good at that! What time? And roughly where?"

"Hmm, we have a couple of places we use in London... roughly where are you?"

"I'm in the Croydon area, and I have a car.."

"Oh, excellent, one of the places is in Surbiton, I'd guess at under an hour away from you. So what time would be good for you?"

"Any time after say... 11am...."

"Ok, let me go and check when the office is available. There is parking in front of the building... I'm hoping you don't drive a Roller or something else that's a bit obvious?"

"No, my Skoda is pretty anonymous!"

"Excellent! Look, Linda, thank you very much for your time, I appreciate it, and I'll look forward to meeting with you tomorrow.... And in the meantime, you have both my office number as well as the mobile number I initially called you from, so any issues, please call."

Linda sat down to think for a bit. Yes, being on 'Singer Behind the Mask' could be a LOT of fun. Plus it wouldn't hurt her singing career! Although she'd read that it could be a bit lonely whilst actually doing it all. And then she'd need to keep it all a secret from everyone until January. OMG, she would SO want to tell the other three, but wouldn't be able to say a thing to them!

About an hour later she got a text, suggesting 11am, no more than an hour for the meeting, and giving an address. Linda texted back to accept.

Chapter 14

Early evening, Linda had a couple of glasses of wine with and after her dinner, then called Zac. "Hi Zac, it's Linda here!"

"Oh, hello Linda, nice to hear from you. I'm guessing Dianne passed my number on."

"Yes, she did.". The wine had indeed relaxed Linda, enabling her to ask: "Hey, I was wondering, would you like to get together sometime? Coffee? Lunch? Go see a movie? Or something like that?"

Zac was also feeling a bit nervous, and hadn't had the advantage of the two glasses of wine. "Umm, yeah, ok. Umm... you doing anything tomorrow? We could meet for lunch...".

Linda thought quickly: she was meeting Trevor at 11am, so would be finished there no later than noon. "That sounds good: I have a short meeting at 11, but I should be able to make it for 12:30, or soon after... Where you thinking? It doesn't need to be anywhere fancy, a place that does sandwiches and coffee will be fine..."

Zac made a suggestion, explaining where it was: whilst she had never actually been there, she vaguely remembered having seen the place.

"Yeah, ok..." Linda's pulse was racing: it had been a while since she had been on anything approaching a 'date', and the thought was a rather nice one. Besides, she was very much looking forward to meeting Zac, but this time one-on-one.

They talked awkwardly for a few more minutes, then said their goodbyes....

Yes, that definitely called for another glass of wine!

Chapter 15

Linda had dressed quite simply today: no false eyelashes like the other night, just a minimum of makeup. Hair held back in a simple ponytail with an elastic hairband. Jeans. T-shirt. Trainers. And, rather perversely, a pink 'CJD' hoodie that had been left over from the last tour! (With the band's name having changed, they were now pretty worthless, but heck, give it ten years and they could become collectors items!)

Linda parked her car: the building was in a not-so-modern bit of Surbiton and looked a bit dingy, but clean, and she could see that would help in making things a bit more 'anonymous'. She walked to the front door, where there was a paper note taped to the door: "Behind the Pipes Productions - ring top bell!". She did so, and very quickly she saw someone coming down the stairs. They opened the door to her, removing the sign at the same time.

"Hello Linda, come on in, I'm Trevor...". She followed Trevor upstairs, and into a small office, where a lady - Linda guessed her to be in her thirties - was waiting. "This is Viv, she and I are one of a handful of people who not only select but also know the identities of our celebrities."

"Hi, Linda, really nice to meet you - and I do like the irony of the hoody!" said Viv, offering a hand. "I hope you're ok with instant coffee..." she added. There was a kettle, some cups, coffee, milk, and a small crate - obviously to hold everything - on the side. It was instantly clear that both Trevor and Viv were completely at ease dealing with someone like Linda: they must have met a LOT of very well known people over the last few years.

"So, before we go in deep with the NDA, let me explain a little about how things work, and what we'll need of you. I've also got a couple of videos that have been recorded by previous contestants, which try to explain what things will feel like for you. Oh, and ask us questions at any time!"

Trever and Viv explained about the way the show was filmed, about needing information for clues, and then about the costumes. "I don't suppose you've had any thoughts about the sort of character you would want to be?"

"Well, not a lot... but I was hoping for something relatively light-weight, so I'd be able to move about a bit, maybe dance a bit. And something that's slightly... well... 'cute'!"

Trevor and Viv smiled. "Ok, well, we can show you a few costume ideas in a moment. First, can we show you these videos, to help you understand what you'll be letting yourself in for?"

The two videos were by well-known ex-competitors, and they didn't pull any punches. They included words and phrases like 'tiring', 'ruthless', 'expect to get bored, very bored', 'early starts, late finishes', 'you can only talk to your partner, and maybe 6 others at most, and then only when you're alone', 'you have to be completely covered up at all times' and 'it feels like a top secret military compound'. The final two comments were rather more positive: 'an amazing fun challenge!' and 'but I'm SOOO glad I did it, it was an amazing experience, so worth it!'.

"So, have we scared you off? Or are you still interested?" asked Viv. "We're both hoping the latter: it would be such fun to have a current pop star like you on the show. I mean, you'll have just come off tour, so they'll never think that anyone like you would ever be able too come on the show!"

"You know, that's so true, and I think that's what seals it for me. Teasing your judges and the audience would be such fun!"

Linda read the NDA: it was very simple and to the point: basically say NOTHING! With the NDA signed, they started talking about other things: what sort of music she would feel happy singing. Some of her life history, so they could start to work on 'clues'. They even took her basic measurements, then showed her some concept art of a few of the possible costumes. Linda rather liked the 'Miss Pig' costume.

"Hey, don't suppose you have some sort of 'Ninja' costume do you?" asked Linda, thinking aloud.

"No, but I do like the idea!".

They chatted more.

"So, about your 'appearance fees'.... " started Trevor.

"Yeah, about that," interrupted Linda. "I get the feeling that, because of my 'status', you might be looking to offer me more than the others, to persuade me to come on board. But I don't think that's right, if anyone were to find out, it could get awkward for everyone. I'm sure you guys have a standard fee you pay, and I'll be ok with that."

"You're sure?"

"Yup! By the way, how DID you get hold of my number?"

"Oh, that was me..." said Viv. "A friend of mine knows Callum Stevens, so I spun her a story about wanting to ask you about someone you might have worked with, background for a new show."

Linda smiled. "Nice idea, and yeah, I can appreciate that Callum would be ok giving you my number for that."

She went and sat down in her car. Oh my goodness! What HAD she just agreed to? Yes, ok, she appreciated that it still might not happen for a load of reasons, but wow, it would be such fun to do it. It was just unfortunate that she wouldn't be able to tell ANYONE a thing - that was going to be the hardest bit.

Chapter 16

Linda put the phone into its car holder, and checked the time: good, it was only 11:45. The meeting had been a good one, and they hadn't wasted much time, so she was nicely ahead of schedule. She had already worked out where to park, so put the destination into Google Maps: 17 minutes.

By the time she had actually found a space in the multi-story car park, and walked back to the exit, it was still not even 12:15... meaning that she could have a nice relaxed walk to where she was meeting Zac.

Linda had officially been a 'pop star' for several months now, and was pretty good at dealing with people - like they had at the pub the other evening. So why was she feeling so nervous? As she was walking along, she realised that she had been subconsciously running her tongue over her braces. It was strange: if you had told her even six months ago that she would be wearing braces now, she would have laughed at you. Yes, her teeth weren't actually perfect, but they were well above average, so why would she ever need braces? Yet, she hadn't hesitated to get them to support Dianne.

The experience so far had been quite mixed. On the down side, it took AGES to brush them, and she needed to do that several times a day. Yes, Jenny had suggested she go get a water pik, but for some reason she hadn't done so yet. Also on the down side, they had initially made her cheeks sore, but that was no longer an issue. The TADs had been a lot easier to cope with than she'd thought they might.

On the positive side, she DID like they way she looked with the braces: they didn't make her feel shy or awkward at all. Funnily enough, once Dianne had actually got her braces (and remembering that she had a lip-bumper and a facebow as well), she was ok too. Whilst she would not wear the headgear out in public (or at the recording studios!), she was fine about wearing it when they rehearsed back at 'the mansion'.

Linda had by now got to the place they were having lunch, and she was just looking through the window to see if Zac was there, when a voice slightly surpised her.

"Linda?" asked Zac. She turned to see Zac looking at her, with a smile on his face. She smiled back, with a nice silver smile

"Ah, so that's why I couldn't see you inside!" she replied. Her heart missed a beat as she looked at Zac: he was actually pretty good looking, with nice straight white teeth, and a rather nice haircut too. Not mentioning his lovely warm voice.

"Shall we go in?" he suggested, smiling at Linda's comment about the hoodie. They joined the short queue at the counter. "Don't worry about the prices on the menu, have whatever you want!" said Zac, referring to the menus on Tuesday that had no prices - and would have been rather a lot more than the prices in here, if they HAD had prices!

"Oh, in that case, do they do 30 day hung steak sarnies?" joked Linda.

"I think they might do roast beef!" replied Zac. Zac too had been a bit apprehensive about meeting Linda again, after all, she was pretty much a mega-star in a girl group that had just had yet another number one hit.

They both got sandwiches and a cake, along with a coffee, and sat down. It was strange: whilst she could now afford to go fancy places like they had the other night, Linda actually felt very relaxed sitting and having a sandwich in a simple cafe like this.

She leant towards Zac and said very quietly: "Look a couple of simple ground-rules...". She was thinking about the earlier meeting. "First of all, there's a lot going on, and even more about to go on, planning for our tour and so on: please don't ask about any of it, it's not something we want to get out pre-tour. And second, no talking in public about who I am, and what I actually do..."

"But what about the hoodie?" replied Zac quietly. "It's a bit of a giveaway!"

"What about my hoodie?" said Linda in a more normal voice. "Cost me 45 quid when I saw them up in Wembley! Actually, no, I think it was 47! It was the last night of their tour, the one when Jenny proposed to Ben!". Of course, the joke was that Linda HAD been there, albeit side-stage, when Jenny had serenaded Ben then proposed!

"You were actually THERE that night?" said Zac, playing along. "That must have been fun!". By now, Linda was smiling, giving Zac a close-up of her braces, complete with bits of bread and meat stuck in them.

"Yeah, me and what... twelve thousand other fans! So look, you know about me,  tell me more about you... like what you actually do?...". With the ice broken, Linda was starting to relax, and she hoped that by getting Zac to talk about himself, then he might relax too.

"Well, as I said the other night, I'm a graphic designer. I'm working on an ad campaign for a new brand of makeup."

"Interesting. So are we talking ads for magazines, or videos for TV?"

"Both. We only just started on it, so coming up with general concepts. Is it going to be three hunky guys with a female model? Or something more 'normal'? After that, we design both the static and moving images..."

"So, how far do you get involved with the whole thing? As in... are you there when the do the filming or photos?". Of course, Linda had recently been involved with the cereals adverts, so was aware of the sort of things that happened.

"Sometime, yes, depends on the customer and so on. That's one of the things I like about what I do, Not only do I get to worth with the team on the initial ideas, we get to see it right the way through until we have the videos or pictures."

"Sounds like you really enjoy what you do: you're putting what you learned at college to great use."

"Probably no different from you," replied Zac, watching what he said. "you've used what you did at college too."

"I guess I have, haven't I? So you been where you are for long? And is it a big company?"

"Same place I started working for out of college. It's actually pretty small, there's just over a dozen of us in total... that's including a couple of 'general office people' plus the boss and his wife. Hey, how many people at where you 'work'? Obviously there's the four of you..."

"Well, Jenny's mum and dad are 'the bosses', but her brother also works for us, and two others. Of course, when we run a 'big event' there's a shed-load more!" I think they were both enjoying talking about what Linda did without making it obvious. "Before that I was working more as a 'contractor', often working with a fairly small team, but on a few occasions there would be over 50 people involved" added Linda, referring to her session work.

"So, you working today?" asked Zac.

"No, still on a few days off. We're waiting for the 'Canadian team' to arrive, which is next week: once they get here, we've got a LOT of work to do". Linda had explained at the dinner that their tour would be a joint one, with all 8 of them playing together, so they needed to write some new songs for them all. She paused. "It's nice to finally be able to talk to you alone...".

By now, Linda had become aware that Zac seemed to be quite attentive, looking at her, but as she smiled once more, she spotted his eyes look down briefly, as if he was looking at her mouth. Which made her smile even more, as she realised that he must be looking at her braces. Whilst she could have made a comment, she felt that it could be awkward for both of them in such a public place. So she said nothing. Hopefully there would be an occasion in the future when she could find out more.

"Yes, it was a bit crazy the other night, everyone wanting to talk. Hey, it was nice to meet Dianne by the way, she's pretty chilled too. Do I gather that she's single at the moment? I read that she split up with her last boyfriend..."

"You HAVE been doing your research, haven't you?"

"Well, I need to understand what I might be getting involved with..." That comment sounded good to Linda: not only was he wanting to meet for lunch today, he was looking ahead.

"So, yes, Dianne and I are both single at the moment..."

"So how long since you last dated then?" asked Zac.

"That's a good one. At least before I..." She was about to say 'joined CJD', but thought better about it. ".. before I joined the new company. And a bit before that. Let's say a couple of years. I mean, I've been out on plenty of 'social occasions', just not had someone special."

"And are you ready yet to....?"

"If the right person comes along, maybe..."

They both ate a bit more, and drank their drinks.

"So, would you like to 'get together' again sometime?" suggested Zac.

"That could be fun. What sort of things do you like doing then?" asked Linda.

"Well, I spend too much time watching TV and playing games, but in the summer I like being able to get out on my bike. Hey, you got a bike?"

"I do, but I have no idea what state it's in. It's in my shed, and I haven't used it for a year or more... But, if you're going to suggest going out for a bike ride, I'll make sure it's working!"

"Yes, I was going to suggest a bike ride..."

"But where? I know there's a few parks nearby, but they are all rather small..."

"Yeah... I just tend to throw the bike on the car, and head out somewhere like Addington, there's some nice places out that way. Of if you'd like to start easier, there's always South Norwood Park. You up for it then? I guess the big question is if you can get your bike ready in time?"

"Well, I've seen a couple of bike shops near where I live, and I've got the rest of today and all of tomorrow to get it sorted, that's assuming you're thinking about this weekend.". It had been a while since Linda had been out on her bike: she used to use it a lot before she got her car, for generally getting around, plus occasionally going out for a ride. The idea of going for a bike ride with Zac had two things going for it: the bike ride itself, and spending some quality time with Zac. Linda was finding that she felt quite comfortable talking with Zac, and had decided that she would like to get to know him better.

Chapter 17

Linda took her bike to her local bike shop: the guy there was amazing, and replaced the 2 tyres and tubes, as well as giving the bike a good service. She also got him to fit a better phone holder on the handlebars.

Even better, the bike was ready early Friday afternoon, and it didn't cost Linda a lot. Linda was very happy, as she could now go on that bike ride with Zac...

Zac came over to Linda's late Saturday morning, and put her bike onto the car with his on his bike rack, then they drove to the park and woods near Addington. The weather was overcast, but the sun was trying hard to escape.

Linda was wearing jeans, a long-sleeved top, with that pink CJD hoodie on top. Over that, she had put a lightweight coat. Zac was also wearing jeans, a shirt, and a slightly thicker coat. They were both wearing trainers. Linda's bike had a nice big basket on the front, so she had filled that with a small rug, a couple of small drink bottles, and a pack of snacky chocolate bars.

The plan was to have a ride, and end up at a pub about half a mile the other side of the park for lunch. The park was sufficiently quiet, and the paths wide enough that they could ride alongside each other, and chat. After a bit, they reached the trees, where the paths were narrower, and in places rather rougher. Finally, they reached a clearing in the woods.

"Can we stop a few minutes?" asked Linda. "I could do with a drink."

"Sure."

As they got off their bikes, the sun came out. Linda grabbed the bottles from the basket on her bike, passing one to Zac.

"Wanna sit down for a few minutes?" Zac suggested. The grass was still a little damp, so Linda got the rug out, and they sat on it. Linda looked at Zac, and Zac looked at Linda.

"Ok, I'm not sure how to say this without you taking it wrong... so I'm not trying to be judgemental in any way but..."

"But?"

"Well, some guys have a thing for girls hair, liking the colour, the style.. long hair or short hair, fringe or no fringe. Some guys like girls with big... errr... boobs, and some like smaller ones, and can be seen sometimes staring at them for a bit too long..." Zac had an idea where this was going. "Or maybe it's glasses, or the shape of their nose. For you, it seems to be my mouth, and more specifically my teeth, or more likely my braces." Linda's tone of voice was very pleasant and relaxed, and definitely not a 'telling off' voice. "So, am I right, do you like my braces? Remember, I'm not being judgemental, just interested to know..." and with that she gave Zac a lovely smile, letting him see her lovely metal smile.

"Well.... errr... ummm..." Yes, Zac was, as to be expected, a bit embarrassed.

"It's ok, I don't mind!" and she smiled once more, this time running her tongue over her shiny metal brackets and wires.

"Umm, yes, I don't know why, but for some reason I find braces to be... well... very attractive!". That had been very hard for Zac to admit. It was something that he'd only ever shared anonymously, online.

Linda kept smiling. "I thought so! Any idea what it is about them? I suspect you actually don't know, just like guys who have a thing for boobs have no idea WHY they do."

"Ummm... I think it's a mix of things. It's something I never got to experience, so I wonder what they are like to have. They make you look... well, different, but in a good way. And there's the embarrassment factor. But otherwise, I'm not really sure what it is that attracts me to them."

Linda took a breath: she had been thinking whether it was time to do this, and she had decided she had waited long enough. "Ever kissed a girl with braces?"

"Sadly not..."

"Would you like to see what it's like?". She put her hand up to Zac's face, and softly touched he cheek. "I promise I don't bite..." Zac hadn't yet confirmed either way, so she took his silence as being a 'yes'. She leaned towards Zac, and put her lips on his, then gently pushed her tongue out, and between his lips, just touching his teeth. She then pulled it back, inviting his tongue into her mouth. Linda relaxed as Zac's tongue started to explore her braces: at first just the front ones, then the ones on her canines, his tongue eagerly running around the metal brackets, then exploring her archwires.

After a few minutes, they paused. "I actually have a few extra bits in my mouth, but they are probably too far back for your tongue to reach. She opened her mouth, and pulled her lip back, letting him see the TADs screwed into her top jaw, as well as the pieces of powerchain that were connected between them and two of her teeth.

"Wow. Didn't it hurt getting those fitted?" asked Zac.

"Not at all, I was numbed up when they were actually installed. I guess there was a bit of discomfort for a few hours later on."

"They don't seem to affect your speech. Don't they get annoying?"

"I read somewhere that your mouth quickly gets used to small things like that, so you're right, I don't have an issue talking... or singing for that matter. Generally they aren't an issue, except for when you get a bit of food stuck in one of the bits of elastic."

Linda took Zac's hand, and brought it towards her mouth, letting Zac run his fingers over her braces: she knew that Zac would be enjoying it, and whilst it might seem to be a little strange to some people, it wasn't really a big deal to Linda. After that, they kissed again, with Linda running her hand through Zac's hair.

It was clear to Linda that Zac was enjoying kissing her and her braces, and to be honest, she was also enjoying being kissed. Zac was actually quite gentle in the way he kissed. His enthusiasm gently increased, until finally Zac became a bit more relaxed.

"So, Zac," said Linda a few minutes later, "I have a question: is there something more than my braces that you like about me?" asked Linda with a cute smile.

"Oh, definitely! While your braces were the first thing that got my attention... just like girls with big... ermmm... 'attributes' might for some other guys. When I discovered that you were a star in a girl-band, I got a certain picture, one that turned out to be oh so wrong. Then later on at dinner, I saw you interacting with the others, and you weren't being the 'spoilt brat' I expected, you were very much a normal person. Then, when you took us all out to dinner and you told us about writing that song then recording it so quickly, I really understood you: I've been there too, and it's something I can respect. And as we just chat... well, I like you..."

Linda could sense that Zac was indeed warming to her. "Thank you... it's actually the first time I've been in this situation... not with a guy, I mean as someone a bit more famous. Life's been a bit full-on since I joined the band, so I've not had a lot of time."

"So, how you feeling about me?" asked Zac. Linda thought for a second or two.

"I'm liking what I see and hear. Many people just seem to get star-struck when they meet us. But, as my first anti-fan, you're definitely not like that. You seem quite relaxed with me, treating me normally, and that's not been happening a lot this last year, so thanks!". Zac smiled when she said 'anti-fan', it seemed to be a bit of a running joke between them, and he didn't mind about it.

They continued to chat, mostly about inconsequential things.

"So, if I ask you out again, are you going to say 'yes'?" asked Zac.

"Oh, I think so... which does raise the question: do you want to see if we can make a go of things? I'd like to...".

"Yes, me too..."

"In that case, sorry to be a party-pooper, but I need to mention a few practicalities of dating a member of CJDL. First of all, you can't give out my phone numbers, especially the one you have, that is for friends and family only..."

"You have another phone?"

"Yeah, my 'work' phone, but again, I'm quite fussy who gets to know it. Jenny told me how she had to change her phone number a couple of years ago because someone got hold of it, even posted it online. If someone wants to get in touch with me, get their number, and I'll call them."

"Yeah, I understand, makes sense. There is one thing that worries me: as your boyfriend, getting hassled by the press."

"That was my second thing: we need to tell the world about us. When Carol started going out with Tom, she got a friendly press photographer to take some pictures of them on a date... so we'll need to do something too."

"How does THAT help? Surely it's just gonna draw more attention to me?"

"Well, we have a 'gentleman's agreement' with the press: we try to be as open as possible about stuff that's going on with us, and in return they leave our boyfriends alone when they are not with us. Yeah, they may say 'hello' to you: I know Tom's had a few nice chats with a couple of the guys when he's been alone." Linda then related the story about how Jenny had once thrown a reporter out of a press conference for crossing the line!

Chapter 18

"So, any plans for dinner?" asked Linda.

"Not really."

"In that case, would you like to come back to my place for dinner?"

"What, a take-away?"

"Not at all, I have a load of food in my fridge and freezer, I can cook us something."

"I didn't realise that pop stars ever did their own cooking."

"I wasn't always a pop star, so I needed to learn to live on a tight budget, which meant that cooking for myself was a must. I actually enjoy cooking too... I mean, I'm not a big cooking fanatic, but cooking can be quite relaxing, it's not something that you can hurry. So, want to risk it? You're welcome to tweet about it.... although probably best wait till the world knows about you, if you don't want a big backlash."

"Yeah, ok..."

"Now, Zac... just because I'm inviting you back to mine is NOT an invitation to examine my bedroom, if you know what I mean! You gonna be ok with that?"

"In that case, can we just have a nice snog in the kitchen?" said Zac with a big smile.

Linda and Zac had a very pleasant and relaxing evening together: Zac seemed to like Linda's cooking, then they watched a couple of programs on Notflux.

"You doing anything tomorrow? Fancy going out together for lunch?" suggested Linda.

"You gonna be ok doing that? Won't people recognise you?"

"I have a feeling it's going to be a LOT harder after our tour, but I haven't had too many issues so far. I think loads of people KNOW about me, but not so many are familiar with how I look. Yeah, they've maybe seen the 'on-stage', but less likely they've seen me when I'm normal."

"You? Normal? Is that possible?" joked Zac. "So, yeah, this tour... you looking forward to it? Or does it fill you with dread? Three months you said - that's a long time to be away from home!"

"At the moment I'm quite looking forward to it. Northern Girls arrive on Tuesday, and that's when the hard work starts. We did our album, and specifically took a short break, so hopefully we'll be suitably refreshed. We need to not only work out the details of what the tour's gonna be like, but we'll be playing some stuff with the Northern Girls, so that all needs to be written, which I think is going to be either great fun, or stupidly stressful. I'm kinda hoping that we'll all be suitably chilled about the whole thing... if we start having 'power struggles' now, it will be hell on tour!"

"So what's it like touring? You did a tour with the band last year..."

"It's a mix of fun and boredom, and luckily that was just a short tour. This one is a bit longer, but we have made sure to build in a few 'days off', not just for us, the crew will need some down-time too."

"Hey, you gonna be playing at that new place up in Manchester?"

"Oh, the Co-op Live Arena? Yeah, there's a rumour that we could end up being the opening act!"

"No way, your tour is still months away!"

"And the place is still not open: as I said....". Zac laughed as he realised that Linda was joking.

"Doesn't a tour start to send you a bit... well... 'crazy'?"

"A lot of it's about including some normality. Jenny can get quite stressed: last tour she was struggling towards the end, but then Ben came and joined her, and that gave her back her 'normality'. He'll be with us the whole of this tour... he's going to be working as part of our management team, helping Brian and Lisa."

"I'm guessing you must have quite a big team around you when you go on tour? I'm thinking that you must need people to do your hair and all that?"

"Hairdressers, makeup, people to help us put on our costumes... and that's before we think about the stage crew or our dancers."

"Can't you put your own clothes on then?"

"It's not so bad at the start of the show, but during the show we'll have costume changes, so we need someone to make sure we each have the correct dress, and then hang up the old ones afterward. Anyway, back to tomorrow lunch... fancy a Sunday Roast?"

Chapter 19

The girls had already arranged to meet at the house on the Monday for dinner, ready to go and meet Northern Girls at the airport on the Tuesday. As they knew things were about to go from 'quiet' to 'stupidly hectic', Ben and Tom had both also come along. Which is part the reason that Linda had invited Zac to join them too. Besides, she wanted him to meet the rest of 'the team'.

Linda was actually the last to arrive with Zac: she had left her car at home, knowing she could eventually get a lift back with one of the others, and had come with Zac (who'd be going home again that evening).

"So, a couple of things you need to know..." said Linda, while they were on the way there. "First of all, Dianne will probably be wearing her headgear and lip bumper, so..."

"Headgear AND a lip bumper... OMG!"

"Yeah, so I am sure you'll 'enjoy the view' but please don't make it awkward for her by being at all obvious. Part the reason I got braces was to support Dianne: I knew that her treatment would be extreme. Carol has braces too: she actually only needs a retainer, but she changed to brackets to support Dianne too..."

"And I know Jenny has braces too, coz I've seen quite a few pictures of her."

"Sounds like you've been busy checking us all out?"

"But of course, I need to be ready for you guys. As your anti-fan, I need to know who I'm dealing with!"

"Yeah, right... well, as I said, please be discrete about Dianne's treatment." Linda explained a bit more background about Dianne's treatment, and how she had braces as a teen. "Oh, yeah, almost forgot: Tom, that's Carol's boyfriend, he has braces too. Nothing special, just metal brackets...."

"Of course. I'm not planning on knowingly upsetting you: I'm sure I could easily do that without actually trying to!"

"Ok, so something else: we're inevitably going to be 'talking business', so please treat ANYTHING you hear as confidential. We really don't want anything getting out before we're ready."

"What sort of things you thinking about?"

"At the moment, it's probably going to be mainly tour stuff. I know you probably want to show off a bit to your friends, but please don't! I'll try and think of some bits you can tell them, if you like... Ah, hang on, turn coming up fairly soon on the right...."

"Hi everyone, this is Zac, my new boyfriend..." said Linda, introducing the new love of her life. People were sat around in the lounge, having pre-dinner drinks.

"About time!" said Carol.

"What do you mean, we've only been going out a few days?"

"I was meaning more 'it's time you had a boyfriend!'. Hi Zac! I'm Carol by the way..."

"Ok, so that's Jenny, and her boyf... sorry, fiancé Ben. Callum there is Jenny's brother... So, Callum, do you remember Zac?" continued Linda.

"Now I see him, I do. We weren't really in the same social groups at college though... Hi there, Zac, and welcome to the house of madness!!" replied Callum.

"Brian and Lisa are their mum and dad, but more importantly are our managers... Then this is Paige, she works for the team doing all sorts of stuff. Sat next to Carol is her boyfriend, Tom, he works at a local radio station. And finally, that's Dianne, who you already know!".

Zac looked over at Dianne again: she looked a bit different from the other night. For a start, she wasn't dressed up. And there was something else different about her... yes, her lower lip was sticking out a bit, and she had a lovely metal facebow between her lips!

"Hi again, Zac. I'm glad you two finally got together!" said Dianne, "Now, for the rest of you, you need to be aware that Zac is actually an anti-fan, it seems that he doesn't like girl bands...." she added smiling widely (and showing off her lovely braces, which both Ben and Zac appreciated).

"And he's a very NICE anti-fan too!" replied Linda, looking lovingly at Zac.

"So, Dianne was saying the last she knew, she had passed you Zac's phone number, so come on girl, we need the gory details...." said Jenny.

"Well... I called Zac the following evening..."

"And how many glasses of wine did you need to make that call then?". Clearly they had all been relaxed by the glasses of wine they were drinking, and were willing to have a bit of fun.

"Probably as many as you've had so far tonight!" retorted Linda, giving as much as she got. "Which reminds me, where's OUR drinks? Anyway... I called him, and we met the following day for lunch. I discovered that Zac likes going out on his bike, and we agreed to go out for a ride together."

"You have a working bike?" asked Carol.

"Well, I do now..."

"Ooooh, it's definitely lurve..... So how was the 'bike ride' then?" said Jenny, making slightly lewd insinuations.

"We had a lovely ride through the park. Oh, come on, Jenny, it was our first proper date, what sort of girl do you take me for?"

"Not saying another word!" added Jenny, smiling, allowing Zac to get a good view of her braces. Zac was sat next to Linda, not saying anything, but he was smiling at the banter going on between the girls. Linda had warned him that things may get like this, and not to worry, she could look after herself!

"Yesterday, I took Zac out for lunch, then we spent the afternoon relaxing, by which I do NOT mean checking out the bedroom... or any other room for that matter!"

"Don't worry, Zac, I got something similar to this when I started dating Carol." said Tom quietly to Zac.

"And today, Zac had that inconvenience called 'work'! So now you know our history together! Umm, guys, I was thinking we could all do a stream tonight, and I could  introduce Zac to the world... I'm hoping you're all up for it. After dinner...."

"Sounds like it could be a bit of fun!" said Dianne, who had grabbed a couple of glasses and the wine bottle for Linda and Zac.

"So, who's cooking us dinner tonight?" Linda asked once they had sat down. I guess I should explain that, when there was 'just family' around, then Lisa was ok cooking dinner, but once the numbers got higher - for example when the 4 girls were working there, or evenings like tonight - then Lisa would get one of several people to come in and do the cooking for them.

"It's Trevor and Gilly..." replied Lisa.

"Oh nice, they do really tasty stuff!" said Linda...

"So, a couple of bits of news to share with you" said Brian as they were eating dinner. "First of all, the record company now has Yu Eye's final version of our recordings, and are very happy. Plus they have confirmed that 'Friends' will be your next single..."

Zac turned to Linda: "Hey, you kept that quiet!"

"Well, it wasn't ACTUALLY confirmed when I played it at dinner with you all last week." replied Linda, beaming with a huge smile. So, it was actually confirmed: HER song would be their next single.

"Well done, Linda," said Lisa, "I think it's a really good song, and it's style is gently moving the group's music style forwards... and definitely VERY different from their first couple of albums!"

"Are the rcord company ok with our 'evolving style'?" asked Linda.

"They seem to be fine with it, in fact I would say very positive about it. John commented that it was another step of change just like when Jenny met Ben, and the band's style changed back then!"

"Tom and I were chatting about it the other night, weren't we? He reckoned it was good for us to change...." said Carol.

"Yeah, a band can live with the same style of music for a while, but if they just stay there, people get a bit bored with 'it's another one just like the last one... and the one before'. But you take someone like Bowie, his style changed many times, and it's what kept him popular. Or someone like Pink. So yeah, you maybe loose a few fans - like I guess you did before - but you'll get plenty more to replace them. Besides, your loyal fans will stay with you pretty much whatever you guys do! Now, as for 'Friends': it took a couple of listens for me to appreciate it, but I think having as your next single is spot on... I'm really looking forward to being allowed to play it on the radio!"

"What you REALLy mean is that you're looking forward to being the FIRST to play it on the radio, don't you?" said Carol with a smile.

"I would never be quite so presumptive..." replied Tom, pausing a moment. "But yes, it would be nice!"

"I'm sure that can be arranged!" said Brian. "Anyway, another couple of bits of news, all  related: that certain cereal company, that you recently recorded the adverts for...."

"You guys have done some adverts? Have they been on TV yet?" asked Zac excitedly.

"Yes, we did... and I'm guessing they simply haven't been aired yet. Brian?"

"That's right. I think they start in 3 or 4 weeks time, and will air throughout your tour. So, one of you came up with the idea of some product placement on your opening night, recording it, and using it for an advert: they absolutely loved that idea - they'll clearly need to agree to what you do - but have come back with a counter-suggestion... how would you feel about doing it EVERY night for the UK part of the tour?"

"Well, as I said at the time, I think it could be great fun for both us and our fans - as long as we keep it short - but I worry about their reactions on the money side." said Jenny

"In what way?" asked Linda.

"Well, it's a bit like the Amazon Prime Video thing: fans will have paid once for the ticket, and now they are also being advertised to. And as I said before, the only way I can see around that is that we do it for charity..."

"I like that idea!" said Carol. "We can make it clear on the backdrop that it's for charity. So it's not ACTUALLY costing the fans anything, except a bit of their time, but we look really good for not profitting, but helping a charity."

Zac was smiling. "You know, I just love your craziness! As CJDL's biggest anti-fan, I think it's a great idea! Just do it! I'm sure your fans will go for it too!"

"I guess the question is then: which charity? Or, depending on how much we make, charities, plural. But we don't need to decide just yet, do we? Any legal issues if we give the money to charity, Brian?" asked Linda.

"I don't think so. I'll have a word with the guys who 'fiddle our books', to find out the best way to handle it, from a tax perspective. But it sounds like you all like the idea?" 4 heads nodded. "Ok, final bit of news, again related to the adverts, and I have a feeling you're going to like this bit, Linda: they would like to work with you all on your idea of 'Gimme Cereals'. Not only that, but this morning I got an email from Babymetal's management company, and given a few fairly simple conditions, they are happy for you to use the song, both as an advert, and a standalone song."

Linda smile widely once again. "Oh, wow, that is going to be so much fun: we get to sing Babymetal! We just need Northern Girls to agree to be our band."

"Erm, I'm trying to understand this," said Zac. "So you're going to sing what? A version of Gimme Chocolate?"

"That's right! The way I was thinking it was we get Northern Girls to be our 'Kami Band', and we four dress up like the girls from Baby Metal, and sing 'Gimme Cereals' rather than 'Gimme Chocolate'. Although, when we do it for the actual advert, it will be 'Gimme Nibosco'" explained Linda.

By now Zac was giggling. "You KNOW I love Babymetal, but that sounds so crazy... but just BRILLIANT! I'm just trying to imagine you in one of those black and red Baby Metal dresses!"

"Ok, I'll be honest," said Linda, "that's part of the reason I want to do it!"

My writing methods are sometimes a bit strange... I'll write a chapter, then realise not only does it need  some braces chat in it, there's a good opening to do so, so I go back and  adjust things. In this case, I realised that Dianne would be in a relaxed setting, so would be in her hg, which Zac would appreciate!

So, story-wise, we're getting to the end of this Linda story... Northern girls arrive "tomorrow" so the story will move to a new one, covering the two bands preparing for the tour, going on tour, and the reaction to their first night. And then there's the bit about their penultimate performance of the tour....

I would have loved to include a performance with Babymetal joining them, but have decided not to include real performers in anything more than a 'passing role'

I agree keeping real performers out of the story is a good choice. Referencing them is a good way to get people to think, 'Could it have happened,' without having to try to fit a date into the story.

I have a slightly different problem with the stories I write. Making my stories about other things besides braces is still a challenge for me.

Chapter 20

So, one thing I completely ignored in the last chapter is that Paula, the camera operator from BD Productions, was at the house, filming them for their second 'fly on the wall' TV program. Her assistant, Sanjay, had already gone home, but Paula wanted to stay, to film them all over dinner and during their stream.

Over dinner, she had set up 3 small cameras, plus she had a hand-held one. For audio, she had a couple of extra small audio recorders that she'd placed on the table. Things had been quiet from a filming perspective since they had been in the studios, so today was really the first time she had filmed them in a more 'personal' setting. Luckily she had done this sort of filming before, so had learnt how to 'keep out of the way: the last thing she really wanted to do was to be involved in the action herself!

With dinner over, they had moved to the lounge. After changing the SD cards, she set up the small cameras around the room, and was there with her handheld, on it's 'steady-mount'. From what shye had watched earlier, and over dinner, she had decided that she was going to enjoy filming these girls!

"We ready?" asked Jenny. Paige and Callum were running tonight's stream, allowing the girls (and their fellers) to not have to worry about the practicalities.

"Yes, just say the word" replied Paige.

"The word..." replied Jenny.

"What??"

"You said to 'just say the word', so I did!"

"Oh, right, yeah...". Paige started the stream, and nodded.

"Hi everyone!" said Jenny. "We have a special stream for you tonight, so let's see who's here." Jenny went over to the camera, and swung it around. "So, behind the camera tonight it's both Callum and Paige." She swung the camera around. "And sat over her on the settee we have me and my beloved Ben. Then we have Dianne, Carol and Tom. And finally we have Linda and.... oh, who on earth is THAT, with Linda...."

By now, Paige was controlling the camera again, and she started to zoom in on Linda and Zac. "Hi everyone, as you can probably guess, I have some news for you! I'd like you all to meet Zac... go on, say hello to all of our fans, Zac!"

"Hi everyone, I'm Zac!" he replied with a small wave.

Linda put her hand onto Zac's shoulder, and moved closer to him. "So, if you haven't worked it out, Zac is my new boyfriend!" and she leaned over and kissed him on the cheek

"... and the chat has officially just gone into meltdown!" said Dianne, who was watching the stream on her phone. "I think you'd better tell everyone all about Zac...."

"Ok, well Zac is a graphics designer, works for a small company in the Croydon area." Linda went on to give a shortened version of how they met at a friends get together, how she wrote a song (but didn't hint about it being their new single), how she invited everone out to dinner, and how she finally got some time alone with Zac over lunch.

"So, a quick request out to any paparazzi watching tonight: please can you be nice to Zac when he's not with me, just like you are nice to Tom and Ben, when they are with Carol and Jenny?"

There were a few questions that Callum had spotted in the chat, and he asked a few of them. mainly non-contentious stuff like 'what's your favourite food'. One was a little more difficult... wello for Zac it was: 'So, what is it about Linda that first attracted you?'. Well, he could hardly say 'her braces were a massive turn-on' could he.

"Well, she has a rather cute smile, but that first evening, when we were in a group, and she was pretty much ignoring me, I found it interesting to watch how she interacted with everyone: she has a nice, and also quite relaxed, sort of personality. She could easily have been showing off, but she wasn't, she was with people she knew, that she clearly enjoyed seeing again, and she was just 'another one of us', a normal person. I guess I've not seen the 'I'm a mega pop star' Linda yet, but I don't think that will scare me off!"

With the stream over, they chatted, drank coffee and so on, until it was time for Zac to go.

"I need to get going, I've got work tomorrow.." he said.

"And of ocouse, going to meet Northern Girls at teh airport, and no doubt do interviews isn't work?"

"Come on Linda, I wasn't meaning it like that. I know I've not known you long, but I can guess that you guys work hard - how else are you going to have become top musicians. And I also know you're going to be busy the next few weeks, I just hope you can squeeze me in sometime!"

"Don't worry, I'll make some time for you! But maybe not the next couple of days. I'll send you a few pics of what we're up to, if you like... your eyes only, of course!"

After a long kiss, during which Zac had another chance to explore Linda's lovely metal braces, Zac went on his way. Linda was feeling very happy, kinda hapy at the same level as when they asked her to joined the band fulltime. She realised that, if she wanted to make a relationship with Zac work, she was going to have to do a lot of the running, making space in her now very busy diary for him.

Chapter 21

Not knowing whether the traffic there would be good or bad, the CJDL team, complete with Paula, had arrived at the airport to greet the Northern Girls quite a bit early, to then discover that the flight was running about 45 minutes late.

"Seems to me that we could this extra time we have to let Linda have a word with the press out there," suggested Paige. "I'm sure they'd like to know a bit more... although I did count at least 3 crews."

"Sounds fine by me" replied Linda. Whilst she had done the stream last night, she knew that the press would want to actually speak to her. "... although having to repeat myself 3 or more times isn't so appealing."

"Hmm, I have an idea," suggested Carol, "kinda like what we did in Korea: I'll offer to interview you for all of them. And if they have extra questions, I can put them to you. One good interview, rather than many bored ones. And it's not like I've never interviewed anyone." Carol was referring to the fact that she had not only joined Tom on his show on many occasions now, and effectively interviewed a LOT of callers, she had even sat in for Tom for a couple of days when he had been ill... and taken the opportunities to speak to (or 'interview') several other well known pop stars.

So, Paige, Brian, Carol and Linda walked over to the now 4 waiting camera crews, persuading them to join them in a slightly quieter area. Paula held slightly back, to get more general shots. She had put small audio recorders onto Linda and Brian, to capture extra audio: her own camera would also be recording the audio.

Paige introduced herself. "So, you are all aware of Linda's news last night, and we know you all want to get an interview with her. And whilst those of you who get the first interviews will be happy, the latter ones will be less good, as Linda starts to get a bit bored with it all. So we have an idea. One interview for you all... but that gives you the problem of who would carry out the interview.... Carol, over to you!"

"Hi everyone, always nice to meet you guys, especially when you are good to us! So here's my suggestion: I'll interview Linda for you. I know her story, and will ask the questions in a way that Linda might be much more willing to answer. At the end, if I've missed anything, then you can give me the questions, and I can ask them, and you can edit them in how you like. That way you all get a good fresh interview, and I'm sure your viewers will be happy to see me doing the interviewing. So, what do you think?"

There was a bit of discussion, but in the end the consensus was to go with her suggestion. Carol spent a few minutes with the presenters explaining what she'd be asking Linda about, and a couple of them came up with a couple more good questions. Once again, Paula stood back from the group so that she could film what was happening more generally: they would be able to get the actual news footage form the relevant companies later on.

"Hi everyone," started Carol, "I'm Carol from CJDL, and I'm here with Linda, and we thought that, while we wait for Northern Girls to arrive, I could ask her a few questions about the announcement she made online last night. So, hello there, Linda! Now, let's start at the start: what was your big news last night?"

The cameras were now panning over and zooming in to Linda, who smiled pleasantly for the cameras, shwing off her lovely metallic smile. "Well, I have a new boyfriend. His name is Zac, and he is a graphic designer."

"So, tell us the story about how you met him..."

Linda summarised the story that we all know well now, with Carol asking a couple of questions to get a few more details. Effectively Linda repeated what she and Zac had said the previous evening on the stream.

"So, where's he from? And does he have any brothers or sisters?" One advantage with Carol asking the questions was that she knew that Linda would be ok answering them, so would give good positive answers, rather than trying to evade the question, which never looked good on TV.

"His parents live in Carshalton, and before you ask, no I've not met them yet... and for that matter, he's not met my parents either!" she said with a slight giggle. "And yes, he has a sister, she's about 4 years older than him, and apparently works as a 'retail manager' somewhere in South London, and lives in the wider Croydon area, kinda like us."

"So, last night he met all of us, everyone in the band, plus a few others: how did he feel about that?" Linda explained how, initially he had said he wasn't into girl bands, and how she had jokingly called him her 'anti-fan' on their first meeting... but how, having heard the band's new album, he was a lot more accepting of their music style. "But I think he quite enjoyed meeting everyone last night, by the end of the evening he seemed quite relaxed."

"Oooh, you mentioned the new album there: are we allowed to say anything about that, do you think?" asked Carol. She was definitely into territory where, had this been a normal interview, the response would have been a 'sorry, not something I can really talk about'. But they had decided to talk a bit about it, without really giving too much away.

"Well, in the same way that the last album was a bit of a change from what you guys had been doing before, I think our fans should expect another change, although maybe not QUITE as big a change. I've had a lot of input into this new album, I fully wrote or partly wrote quite a few of the songs, and I think you're seeing my musical tastes come through. But I think they are all still recognisable as being CJDL songs."

"Any idea when it's going to be released? And what news of a new single?" These, again, were a couple of questions that they knew the press would like, and had decided to give them a bit of a teaser.

"I believe the album will be out a few weeks before we go on tour. As for the single, I can't say a lot right now, but it is a song that I wrote, and it's going to be a bit different in terms of the 'pacing' of the song, but everyone who has heard it so far seems to like it. And I guess it will also get released before we go on tour, because I don't know about you Carol, but I want to be able to sing it when we're on tour as our single! So, when it's out, remember to buy it and stream it!"

"Ok, here's an interesting question, it came from one of the TV interviewers over there: as the 'new girl' in the band, do you still feel like you're the new girl?"

Linda smiled. "Yeah, nice question. And the answer is actually very easy: no, I really feel like I'm one of the band now. You guys were always good to me, but while we've been writing and recording the new album, there's never been any feeling that I'm anything but part of CJDL. So, I guess you guys are stuck with me for now!"

"Linda, thank you so much for answering my questions so candidly!"

"My pleasure, Carol, it's been fun." She paused a moment, then turned to the reporters. "Look, Tom and Ben - that's Jenny and Carol's boyfriends - are really appreciative of the privacy you afford them when they aren't with us. Please can I ask you to extend the same courtesy to Zac? I know you'd all have liked to have met Zac today, but he has to work, kinda like the rest of us. But I promise I'll organise a way for you guys to meet him sometime soon! Thanks!". Everyone seemed to be ok with that.

"Can I ask one more simple question?" asked one of the reporters.

"Sure, fire away! replied Carol.

"Well, it's more to do with the tour than with Linda: any ideas yet what the shape of the performances will be like?"

Carol, Linda and Brian had a very quick chat. "I'm afraid it's going to be a bit of a non-answer, but let's do it." Carol and Linda got themselves back into position.

"Linda, a quick question about our tour: do we know yet what's going to happen in the performances?"

"I'm afraid not, that's one of the first things we'll be working on with Northern Girls in the next week or two. However, there's no way it's going to be two separate performances: we've already decided that we want to all perform together, as well as alone, but beyond that we just haven't decided." Linda paused and turned to the reporter who had asked the question. "That a good enough answer for you?"

"Yup, that's fine. I must admit, I'm really looking forward to seeing what you girls all do, I think it's going to be quite interesting!"

The TV crews all went away happy: whilst they had all just recorded the same interview, their questions had all be answered, and in a few cases, in more depth than they might have otherwise been answered.

Carol felt quite chuffed that she had clearly done an acceptable interview: maybe it was something she could do a bit more for the band. In fact, it was something that she repeated less than an hour later... In the meantime, Carol and Linda joined Jenny and Dianne, who were chatting with a small group of fans. After giving some of them their autographs, they too had a chat with them... and yes, Linda got loads of questions about Zac. But Linda didn't mind: unlike the press, these were the people that directly supported the band, by buy concert tickets and merchandise, and paying for their records. People a bit like she had been up until a year ago.

Finally, after a couple of cups of coffee and, and after a 45 minute delay (something to do with the jet-stream winds not being as strong as normal) Northern Girls arrived, and came into the arrivals area. Whilst everyone else was kept back, our four girls went over to Taylor, Kate, Meg and Erin, and hugged them. Paula was nearby, and filmed it all.

"It's great to see you all again!" said Linda.

"And you too... so, we're finally here! The roller-coaster is about to depart!" replied Kate.

"Yeah, but I think it's going to be a lot of fun!"

Having got pictures of the 4 Canadian girls actually arriving, as a result of Carol's earlier help, the TV crews quickly went to a quieter area where our 4 CJDL members brought the 4 Northern Girls. Brian had spoken with their entourage, including their manager, Andre, and they were all keeping themselves slightly out of the way of the cameras: they knew how important this publicity was.

Three of the camera crews had a sound guy, with a boom mic, so Carol just had to hold two radio mics in her hand.

"Hi everyone, I'm Carol, from CJDL, and I'm here with the other three members of my band to welcome the 4 ladies from Northern Girls to England! Hi ladies!" There was a big cheer, not just from the 8 ladies themselves, but also the crowd that had gathered. "I guess the first thing I should do is to get these ladies to introduce themselves...". As the four Canadian ladies introduced themselves, they all smiled, letting everyone see the shiny metalwork on their teeth. Clearly, at some point, they would need to address 'the elephant in the room': why did 8 pop stars all have braces? But Carol had decided that this would NOT be mentioned today: Northern Girls (and CJDL for that matter) needed to have a good, simple, and easily acceptable story. Without a certain level of planning, awkward questions might get asked, and embarrassment caused.

"So you're in England now to prepare for our European tour" Carol asked Taylor, the leader of the 4 ladies.

"That's right. We just finished recording our new album, but I think we've all got a lot of work ahead of us to get ready for this tour!"

"How was the recording?"

"Yeah, a few issues, if only because our producer wanted it to be 'just right', but otherwise it all went ok."

"Any plans to 'pop back home' before the actual tour?"

"I suspect we might, but that would just be for a few days. There's a lot to do, and we're used to being away from home." replied Taylor,.

"Any time for a bit of sightseeing maybe?"

"I hope so! Doing what we do is actually not a lot different from what most people do, we work hard during the days while preparing for a tour, so we need a few days off every so often. And I know there's so much to see here in London and nearby..."

Carol chatted to the other band members for several minutes, then turned to the TV crews: "Any other questions?". There were a couple, and Linda asked them. Again, the TV crews were appreciative of what Carol had done.

"I'm impressed, Carol." commented Andre. "That worked really well, and got it all over with quite quickly!"

"Yeah, I did one with Linda earlier too. But I suspect we'll have a few more interviews to do between now and the start of the tour!"

Chapter 22

Last night, they had booked a small restaurant, by which I mean the place was closed, and they were the only diners. All 16 of them, plus Paula and Sanjay. How did I make 16? Well, Ben, Paige and Eleanor (fan club) were there too, so was Taylor's boyfriend, who had come over for a few days. Plus Andre and Wendy, Northern Girls' PA. The evening finished fairly early, as the Northern Girls were quite tired after their flight, but it was a chance for people to, once again, get to know each other. And a chance for Paula and Sanjay to get some good footage.

"Good morning everyone!" said Brian, as he walked into the dining room. The table was big enough for all 8 girls, Ben, plus a few others to sit around it, a small number of others were sat behind. Also Paula and Sanjay were there, filming. Todays meeting, being the first of many, would definitely be something that would want to be included in their 'fly on the wall' documentary.

So, why did I just highlight Ben there? Well, the 'CJDL team' have decided to get Ben to join their 'management team', with the longer-term plan that, if things went well, Ben might take over from Brian as their manager. Ben has actually been (unofficially, and part-time) helping out for a bit now, and Brian and Lisa are feeling that it's maybe time to step back: they had originally become CJD's managers when the band was starting out, if only to make sure the 3 girls weren't 'ripped off' when they got their first record contract, and when they went on tour.

So, it's the next day: the Northern Girls and their entourage (a boyfriend included) were staying at another large house they had rented for the next few months, under 30 minutes away. They had eaten breakfast there, and come over to 'the Mansion'. Yesterday was just one of those crazy days, where not a lot actually got done. The girls were a bit jet-lagged, so had gone to bed early: today was their first day to start getting ready for the tour.

"Andre and I have been talking over the last few weeks, and between us have come up with a list of stuff we need to get decided quickly, so we can start organising stuff...". He passed around sheets of paper with a list on, which included things like 'decide band name', "tour name", 'shape of the show' and that sort of thing. "So, I'm sure individually you've had ideas for the name of the joint band, as well as the tour name, but this is really the first chance we've had to be all together. It's so fundamental to so many things that need to be done... publicity, posters, merchandise, graphics, you name it. Shall we start with the band name?"

A lot of names were said, and written down. Things like 'Eight of us' and 'Them and Us'. They did a similar things for the tour names.

"Thanks everyone" said Brian. "So, I think we all need to go away, think about it, talk about it too... I'm kinda hoping that we'll be able to work out the names maybe tomorrow or the day after. As I said, we need to make a decision on this pretty soon."

"A question, about 'logos'," asked Linda. "obviously we're going to need some sort of new logo or image for the joint band name, but I'm just wondering whether the CJDL logo needs a bit of a revamp while we're at it? I'm not saying I have an issue with our current one, but you've had it a while, and at the end of the day, it's just 'CJD' with an 'L' added to it."

The room was quiet for several seconds. "I guess we have a certain emotional attachment to it, so maybe it IS a discussion for us to have." said Carol. "Taylor, Meg, you guys... you're not so close to it, thoughts? And don't hold back, we're ok with any good critical feedback..."

While Carol had been talking, Paige had got the logo up on her tablet, and was holding it so the Canadian team could see it.

"Difficult one!" replied Taylor. "So, how old is that logo?"

"Well, we got it done when we were starting out, so about 6 or 7 years ago now" replied Dianne. "So what you thinking?"

"If I'm honest, it's still 'ok', but you guys have changed since then, haven't you? So maybe it's something to at least think about, talk about...."

Next, they started to discuss the format for their performance. Yes, they were all very happy to try anything and everything together, so obviously some new stuff, but also Northern Girls were happy to act as a 'backing band' to let CJDL sing a couple of their older songs.

"You know, I think it would be good fun for each of us, when we're playing alone, to play one or two of each others songs." suggested Erin.

"Like the idea!" replied Jenny. They chatted for a while about ideas, including having some sort of 'solo spot', and even maybe something where one of them sang with a crew-member. Plus whatever was needed for any guests.

"Ok, so kinda related, I guess we need to talk about cereals." said Linda.

"Cereals?" replied Kate.

Brian briefly explained about the recent commercials. "So, Linda suggested that they could do a version of... oh, go on Linda, you explain it!"

"How would you like to be our 'Kami Band'? We want to do a version of Babymetal's 'Gimme Chocolate!', except it'll be 'Gimme Cereals!'. And we'll probably want to do a version called 'Gimme Nabosci!' for the actual company".

"Oh, yeah, I'd LOVE to do that!" replied Meg. "You gonna get dressed up in black and red for it too?"

"Of course! I mean, how ELSE could we do it?". Linda looked at the others.

"Oh, definitely!" replied Kate. "Sounds like we have some fun learning to do!"

Paula was at the side, filming all of this: it was all very exciting stuff, the sort of things that fans never got to see, and it would be great for their eventual TV program.

After discussing a few other things, the girls all went off to the music room: Northern Girls instruments were due to arrive later that day, so Callum had organised someone he knew - who was a great drum-tech, and could easily be the guy joining them on tour - to unpack and set Erin's drums up. We are, of course, talking about 'proper' acoustic drums, rather than the electric ones that Dianne had recently bought.

"Oooh, they look nice and new!" said Erin, Northern Girls' drummer, looking at Diann's new electric drumkit.

"They are. And so much nicer than the older ones, the skins react so much more like real ones. Two bass kicks too. Want a go?" explained Dianne.

"Stupid question, of course I do! Although I'm still not a great fan of them...".

"I have a feeling you might change your mind a little bit when you've tried these, they are so much better than my old ones! Ok, let me set them up... I'm guessing you want a good rock sound to them, don't you?". She interacted with the setup screen, and picked up a couple of sticks, and had a quick play. "There you go, all yours!"

Erin took the sticks, and sat at the drums, and spent a couple of minutes familiarising herself with the layout. "Hey, can you swap these two over? And tune that one down a bit?"

"Easy... that's the joy of electric drums...." Again she made a few adjustments using the setup screen. "Half a moment, I have an idea....." more screen and button touches. "Ok, so this keyboard to the side, you can use that to tune these 3 drums up and down to your heart's content!".

Erin played again. "Which key was it to take the snare down?" she asked. Dianne pointed, but let Erin make the change. "Ok, yes, I see what you mean, THAT is nice!"

While Erin was trying out the drums, the rest of the girls had been checking out the (many) guitars that Callum had found and plugged in - at Callum's request, Linda and Carol had brought along a couple of their older guitars. Dianne sat down at the old acoustic drum kit, and quickly checked it out.

"So, have you guys had a chance to work on any of our songs?" asked Taylor.

"A couple... 'Yellow snow' was one of them. We just liked the name!" replied Jenny.

"Ok, in that case, how about we give it a go?"

About an hour and 3 songs later, they decided to take a break.

"You know, your new drumkit isn't that bad. I mean, still not as good as my acoustic set, but not half bad!" commented Erin

Chapter 23

"Hey, Linda, you got anything planned for tonight?" asked Jenny.

"No, why?"

"Well, Ben and I were going to team up with Taylor and Phil, and go out for a nice meal. Just wondering if you and Zac want to join us. I was going to tip Sarah off, let her and her pap friends get some pics, so it would be a great opportunity to introduce Zac to them."

"Good idea! Let me call Zac, see if he's up for it....". She got her phone out and called Zac. "Hey, Zac, would you like to come out with us for dinner tonight?" Linda asked Zac.

"Who's us, then?"

"Jenny and Ben, plus Taylor and her boyfriend Phil. It's actually a good opportunity for you to finally 'meet the press'... because it won't just be you they're interested in!"

"Hmmm..." commented Zac.

"Look, Zac, if you're wanting to go out with me, you're going to have to accept that the press and photographers are part of my life. And our experience is that things always work out better when we're upfront, and proactively give them photo ops."

"Yeah, I guess you're right. Doesn't make it any less scary though!"

"Don't worry about it, we've got to know most of them now, especially Sarah's friends, and they are actually nice guys. So, you up for it?"

"Sarah? Who's she?"

"A very friendly photographer: in the same way we give Tom quite a few exclusives for the radio, we  give Sara first dibs on some good photo ops, like tonight. Don't worry, she's very much on our side. Ages ago, Jenny had her long hair cut, ended up being an ambassador for a wigs charity, and Sarah did a load of stuff for the charity for free - big win-win for everyone involved. So, yeah, Sarah's one of the 'good guys'!"

"So, yeah, I guess so. So where, when, and what sort of dress code?"

"Here at the mansion, we'll organise transport from here. Can you make it for say 6-30? And smart casual, what you wore out when I treated everyone would be just right..."

"Can you make it, say, 6-45, give me time to get home and change. I mean, I have my hair and makeup to do too!" he said, pulling Linda's leg.

Linda laughed. "Just trying to imagine you in makeup, to the level we wear on stage..." Linda smiled at the thought. "Ok, 6-45 is fine! See you later.... love you!"

"Umm...."

"Go on, say it, it won't hurt you!"

"I'm at work..."

"Yeah, so am I! Come on...."

"Ok... I love you too...." said Zac softly.

Zac arrived a few minutes early, and Linda introduced him to the Northern Girls. They had organised themselves into small groups of 4 and 6 to go out for meals tonight, in different places.

Jenny had spoken with Sarah, to tip her off about where they would be, so she would be waiting with a small group of paps, ready to take their pictures. Clearly, they would be interested in Taylor, as well as Linda and Zac.

An UberXL arrived soon after, and they all went off to their restaurant. Jenny messaged Sarah on the way, so they could all be waiting for them when they arrived.

Sarah was waiting with 3 other photographers where Jenny had told them they would arrive. The Uber pulled up, and Jenny was the first to get out, along with Ben. They waited a moment to let the small group of paps get ready for them.

"Hi everyone! Nice to see you all." The cameras started clicking. "Ok, so name checks, wouldn't want you getting them wrong, would we? So, you know me and Ben by now, so let me introduce you to Taylor, and her boyfriend Phil: she's the 'frontman' for Northern Girls...".

Taylor got out of the Uber with Phil, and they stood there letting the team take their photos. "Hi guys, nice to meet you. I'll guess you must be Sarah... you're the only lady here!"

"Hi Taylor! Yes, that's me!" replied Sarah.

"And now, the couple I suspect you REALLY want to meet. CJDL member Linda, and her new boyfriend, Zac!". Jenny had got good at introducing people.

Linda and Zac got out, and stood there, letting the team take their photos. "Ok, Zac, we need to give then something worthwhile!" said Linda quietly to Zac. Linda knew that they wanted something a 'bit more interesting than just standing there', so she started by putting her arm around Zac, and giving him a bit of a hug - she could hear the cameras working hard. Next she put her hand up to Zac's face, and smiled. "Go on, give them a nice smile!". Finally, she moved in for a kiss, which she held, to make sure they all got some good pictures.

"So, Zac, say hi to Sarah, she's the one that organised this reception for us. Oh, and that's  Bill, and that's Sanjay... you'll get to know them after a bit!". Linda waved at them all.

"So, you guys gonna be ok with the same 'rules' for Zac as you do for Ben and Tom... so leave him alone when he's not with me?" The team of paps agreed.

"Thanks guys, I'm still very new to all this... so go gently on me, will you?" said Zac, trying to break the ice a little. More clicks.

"Can we have some pics of you three girls, please?" asked Sarah.

"But of course..." They got themselves into position, then had a bit of fun. "Hey, faces together and smile, girls!" suggested Jenny. The three of them smiled, letting the paps see their metallic smiles.

"That's a lot of metal you have there!" said Bill.

"You sound like you understand braces there, Bill..."

"Oh, my teen daughter has them, not over keen on them. So yeah... as I said, a lot of metal."

"If you think we have a lot of metal, wait till you see the other five. We all have braces!"

"Eight girls with braces: that's gonna be quite some sight!" said Bill.

Something clicked in Jenny's mind. She looked at Linda and Taylor. "Eight girls in Braces?... that could be a good name for the band! Thanks for the idea, Bill!"

"It's gonna cost you...."

"Tell you what, how about we do a selfie with you for your daughter? And we'll record you a video message for her too."

Bill smiled. "Oh, she'd LOVE that! She's a big fan....".

"Ok, Sarah, want to take some pics, pass them on to Bill?". The three girls gathered around Bill, so that Sarah - and the others - could take pics. "So, what's your daughter called?" asked Jenny.

"She's called Lily."

"Lily... nice name.... Ok, Bill, ready?". Bill got his camera ready to record video, and nodded. "Ok, so hello there, Lily, I'm Jenny, and this is Linda, and we're half of CJDL. And this lady is Taylor, she's the frontman of Northern Girls, I suspect you'll be seeing a lot more of her in the next month or two. So, your dad - Bill - has come here to take our pics, and he told us that you have braces too, but aren't so keen on them. Well, we're here to tell you that braces are actually very cool, and you should never be ashamed of showing them off, be proud of having them! Besides, they aren't forever, and when you're done, you'll have an amazing smile!" With that, all three of them smiled at the camera, once more showing off their metal smiles, then finished by waving at the camera.

"Thank you, Jenny, she's gonna be amazed when I show that to her! Thanks!"

"Ok, guys, we need to get going, I'm sure we'll be seeing you all again soon! And remember to give Zac his space, will you..."

"So, Ben, you've obviously been through all this: what am I letting myself in for?" asked Zac over dinner.

"Well, for a start, you can expect to see those pictures in the papers and online over the next few days. To be honest, from what I saw, there's nothing there to be ashamed of. If you bump into any of the paps, just be nice to them, and remind them if needed about not taking your picture. I've actually had a couple of nice chats with some of them: at the end of they day, they just need to do their job, same as the girls have to do their job. When you're with Linda, trust Linda: I've seen her handle the press, and she seems to have got pretty good at it."

"Do you ever get people in the street coming up to you?"

"Not all that often. If I've got the time, then I'll maybe have a quick chat to them. If I'm busy, I'll kinda acknowledge them and continue on, but being polite. Oh, by the way, if you get any problems, public or paps, do let us know. Take their picture if you need to. I had a bit of an issue with a photographer from one of the dailies in the early days: Jennifer just kicked him and his reporter out of their next press conference, making it clear why! No real issues since then."

"Yeah, Linda told me about that one. So what sort of stuff can I expect when I'm with Linda?"

"Depends on what she's doing. When they go and 'meet the fans', then the fans are mainly there for them, but may want to take some pics of you as a couple. Be nice to them, make their day, and they'll love you for it. One of the things I often do is to help 'organise' their fans, maybe taking pics with their cameras for them - although Paige tends to do that if she's there."

"If in doubt, just ask me..." said Linda. "As far as official photographers go, we can usually guess where they will be, so we always try to build in a few minutes for them. If we just bump into someone, then we'll give them some time if we can: most of them really appreciate that, take their pics quickly, and let us get on with things. So, yeah, it was weird for me at first, but I'm pretty used to it now. Although, if you need to speak to an expert, then speak to Jenny!"

"When Ben's with me, he just assumes that we will get 'accosted' by someone at some point. If we have time, we'll stop briefly - our fans are important, and without them, we'd have no tour... and without the tour, we'd be pretty poor!"

"Don't you get money from selling CDs and streaming..."

"Yes, now we're more successful, it's better, but is still quite small compared to what a tour can bring in...." explained Jenny.

"This next tour is going to be a big one, the money involved is what you'd expect to see in a medium sized business." explained Ben. "Do the maths: ticket price times size of audience is a BIG number. But there's a LOT of expenditure too. But at the end of it all, the band is going to - hopefully - make some serious money... which will pay for all of our time over the last few months working on their music, plus the next couple of months getting ready before the tour, and the 3 months ON the tour. And I'm sure they are going to need some 'down-time' afterwards... they usually do!"

Linda thought about that: yes, she'd definitely have (more like NEED!) a few weeks off, and then she might be working on 'Singer behind the Mask'... Yes, she really WAS hoping they would let her do that, it would be so different, but the idea of her being solo, no band to work with, well that was actually a bit scary!

"So, yes, your life will be different, but take it in your stride, and you may find you enjoy the experience. At the end of the day, I guess it's all part of the 'going out with Linda' package! By the way, if you need any help, or want to talk, I'm here for you, and I'm sure Tom would be ok too."

"So Taylor, what's it like for you guys over in Canada?" asked Zac

"I get the feeling we do things a bit differently. We don't interact with our fans like these guys do. And watching these two handle the photographers earlier, wow, that was an eye-opener for me! Maybe we four need to get trained up by these girls!"

As they chatted, they exchanged stories about fans, performances, dealing with the press and TV.

"So, Zac, how are you feel about going on TV with Linda then?" asked Ben.

"TV? You kidding me?"

"No. I'm sure they'd love to have you. I've been on TV with Jennifer a couple of times, and it was ok."

"I'm assuming they'll want us to go on TV at some point?" asked Taylor.

"Yes, there was talk about maybe next week, all eight of you, but still waiting to hear. They don't know what they are letting themselves in for, do they? So, by then, we'll need to have a group name, and the name for the tour. We'll probably get Carol to tell the world on Tom's show."

"Ah, yes, he's a DJ on a local station, isn't he?"

"That's right. I know he'd like you four to join him in the studio sometime..." said Ben.

"Don't worry, I'm sure Carol will be there too," explained Linda, "in fact she'll probably be the one talking with you most of the time. She often sits in with Tom during his show, and even did a couple of the shows when he got ill - with a bit of help of course! Probably one of the more relaxed bits of radio you'll get to do!"

"Yeah, we have a good relationship with a couple of the guys at CBKZ, our local station."

Chapter 24

It's the morning after, breakfast time. Brian and Lisa are already having breakfast, and the other girls are slowly coming down to join them. Some mornings they would be a lot lazier, but today they knew that Taylor, Kate, Meg, Erin planned to get around there are a 'reasonably sensible time', so they wanted to be ready for them.

"Hi mum... dad. Hey, dad, we think we might have a name for the band, and one for the tour..." said Jenny.

"Ok, and it is?"

"So, last night you know how I went out with Linda and Taylor for dinner, meeting some paps on the way. Of of them made a comment about us being 'Eight Girls with Braces'. I mean, it just works in so many ways!"

Carol smiled. "Yeah, like it!"

Brian smiled. He was used to Jenny's often slightly strange ideas - of which this was another one - but she was right, it would work ok. And there would certainly be no issues with ANY other band using a name anything like it. And it was very different. And simple too. "Ok... I can see a lot of plusses for the name, so what about the name for the tour?"

"Well, 'The Orthodontic Tour', OBVIOUSLY!" said Jenny.

"Yeah, we're gonna need to make a few orthodontic pit-stops during the tour to get our ligs updated..." added Linda.

Just then, Dianne walked in. "I heard something about band names and braces... what have I missed?" Jenny explained again.

Dianne sat down at the table, and grabbed the coffee cafetiere, and poured herself a coffee. "Yeah, that works, both of them do" she replied with a smile.

"Is everyone happy with those names?" asked Brian. "More importantly, anyone NOT happy? I guess it's something you need to talk over with Northern Girls when they get here, but given the way you were all thinking yesterday, I think they are going to like it too! As ever, you manage to surprise me, but heck, why not! It's certainly going to give you something to talk about when you go on TV and the radio!"

"So, how was your evening out last night?" Linda asked Dianne a couple of minutes later. Dianne had gone out with Erin and Meg for the evening.

Dianne smiled: she seemed happy. "I bumped into Mike last night, we ended up having a really nice chat.... and...."

"... and?" said Linda. "Come on, you can't keep us on tenterhooks like that!"

"... and we're going to give things another try. Take things gentle..."

"Oh, wow, that's great! Sounds to me like a bit of a break from each other has healed a few wounds."

"You're probably right there. I felt so angry when we split up, but I've been feeling a lot better about things recently, so when we saw each other, there was no bad feelings. I know I've missed him, and I think he's missed me too..."

"Hey, kid, I'll be rooting for you!" said Linda, "both of you. He's a good guy is Mike." Linda had gotten to know Dianne quite well recently, and knew that there had been a 'big hole' in her life since she and Mike had split up.

How odd, I thought I had already posted chapter 25, which is the last chapter. That's what happens as you get older, you start to forget things, or miss things!

-----------------

Chapter 25

Zac joined everyone for dinner the following evening: Linda was really trying hard in her relationship with Zac, and would have just gone out with him for the evening, but was rather tired after a busy day.

"So, Linda told me you were trying to decide whether you want to keep or change your logo..."

"Yes, I'm divided right down the middle: part of me want to remain 'loyal' to our existing logo, the other half is thinking that maybe it's time for an upgrade!" commented Carol.

"Well, I hope you don't mind, but I've been thinking about logos for you, and had a word with my boss, with the result that he let me spend the afternoon coming up with some very basic ideas. They are nowhere near finished images... how do I describe it? Well, I guess if you guys are looking to come up with a new song, you'll maybe grab a guitar, and start strumming, see what tunes, what words come into your heads. Or maybe like Linda out for a chinese meal with her friends, and she starts thinking about ideas for a song about her friends. What you have is little ideas, concepts, there's a lot more work to be done before you have an actual finished song. Or logo..."

"Ok, that makes a lot of sense. So I know how I write a song, so how does a graphic designer come up with a logo?" asked Jenny.

"Well, a lot is going to depend on exactly what you are working on. Let's take a sports shoe company: they need a logo that has no relationship to their company name, but gives out the 'ethos' of what that company is about... so we'd probably run a couple of 'brainstorming sessions' with the customer. Find out who their target customer is: young or old. What values do those people have, and that sort of thing..."

"So, I guess you're talking about the 'Nike tick' sort of thing?"

"Yeah, exactly who I was thinking about, I'm sure they spent a LOT of time understanding what their business is about. But for you guys, that's not really so relevant."

"How so?"

"Well, YOU are the product. We KNOW who you are. We KNOW your target audience and so on. You have a band name which really HAS to be part of any logo you use..."

"Ah, yes, right...."

"So, I went back to basics, and just let my mind go wild, tried to come up with a few different ideas. I'm thinking that maybe I can plug a USB stick into your TV after we've finished in here, and walk you through what I did..."

"Hey, Zac, thank you!" said Linda. "It's odd, and I suspect it's like this for all of us, but it's not often I get to see what someone I know actually DOES in their job! So I'm looking forward to see what you have come up with!"

So, maybe an hour later, they have all settled into the lounge, and Callum has set up the usb stick in the TV, and passed the control over to Zac. "Ok, so, do you guys remember what your first band logo was?" asked Zac.

"Well, pretty similar to what we have now, I guess!" replied Dianne.

"Bzzzt! Sorry, wrong answer!" said Zac, smiling. "Think back a bit...."

There was silence as everyone thought. Callum smiled, because he'd already seen the image that Zac was about to show.

"Half a moment, you're not thinking back to when we were 'Just Three Girls' are you?" asked Jenny.

Zac smiled. "Well remembered, Jenny! I did a bit of digging online, and found THIS...". He showed a picture of a an old poster, with a simple logo for 'Just Three Girls'. The next image was a closeup, the last one was an aspect corrected view, that showed the logo nice and square.

"Wow, nice one, Zac! I'd forgotten all about that one..." said Carol.

"It's very simple, only just a logo, rather than simply words. I'm guessing knocked up buy a friend at school or college who could draw a little. But it does it's job! So, why DID you change the name?"

"I think that might have been me" said Brian. "I guess my thinking was that it was a big 'generic' for a band. Needless to say it was Jenny that came up with 'CJD'!"

"Well, I think she did well. Yes, I think you were right Brian, 'Just Three Girls' is a bit generic. Nice, but still generic. Ok, so this is the earliest CJD logo I was able to find, and as you said, Dianne, not THAT different from what you have now, apart form the added 'L' for Linda." The next picture showed the current 'CJDL' logo. "Ok, so I decided to do two things. The first was to play with the current logo, see what simple tweaks I could do. After that, I just went 'blue sky', and let my mind wander. Kinda like Linda at the restaurant!"

The next few images took the existing logo, played with different colours (rather than the simple black currently used). He paused at one where he put the four girls faces into the letters.

"A interesting idea, but doesn't actually work that well... but you never know till you try it, do you?"

"Hey, just like writing a song! Tell you what, I'm looking forward to seeing your new ideas..."

"Well, that's what we're going to next. So, think of these as very raw ideas, concepts. Maybe you like a specific idea. Maybe you think that 2 of the ideas could be merged. Maybe you like the image, but not the colours. I'm kinda hoping that at the end of this, if nothing else, you'll know whether you want to keep your current logo, of do something new: if that's all I do tonight, then this work will have been worth it!"

Zac showed the girls maybe 30 very simple ideas, very quick sketches if you will, all very different. "So, I then looked at those, and chose 4 of them, to go a bit further. Still very raw, but a bit more developed...". Zac showed them more pictures, and was watching the girl's reactions as he displayed the different images.

"So, I took that last idea, and went a bit further...." This time, the logo incorporated their their upper bodies, then a version with just their faces. "Of course, once you HAVE a logo, you can do some silly things, just for one purpose... maybe for a specific tour..." The last image was very similar to the previous one, with their faces in the logo. Except this time they were all smiling, and showing off their braces! There were smiles and giggles all around.

"Hey, Zac, thanks for doing that!" said Ben, "Some VERY different ideas there. Jenny, you weren't sure the other day about the logo, has this helped you in any way?"

"Yeah, Zac, that was very thought provoking, and my thoughts now... yes, I think it IS time for a change. I'd like to go through those again tomorrow, try and work out which bits of what I like..."

"You know, you're right, it DOES feel like the way we create our music, and what you showed us, well, an interesting set of ideas." said Carol. "I'm with Jenny though, it's made me be 100% certain that we need a new logo for the band. Dianne? You were not so sure the other day..."

"So what's the next step then?" asked Ben.

"We need to make it official: I'll get your initial ideas, then get a couple of the other guys to add their ideas in, then get you over to meet everyone and see what they have done. I'm assuming there's no problems with... well, paying us for our work?"

========

So, looks like the band will have a nice new logo for their tour!

With Northern Girls now joining our 4 ladies, I'll end this story about Linda, and move the story over to a new one, called 'CJDL on Tour', which will follow the band's journey through the tour preparations, and into their tour.
