I want to get metal braces, but I'm fearful!
« on: 23. July 2020, 16:33:04 PM »
Hey everyone, I thought this might be a good place to ask this question. I am a 35 year old male, and I really, REALLY want to get metal braces. I have had a consultation already and they say to get the result I'm after, I need fixed braces and a quad helix. Brilliant!

But here's the thing, I make videos and have a small following, and many of my leads come from my following. I don't want to lower my authority in my industry. I have this weird fear about having less leads and customers because of having metal braces. Like they'll make me seem juvenile.

I'm less afraid of what friends and family would think, but it's still something concerning.

Sometimes I just feel like "Screw it! I'm gonna do it!" and other times I'm feeling the fear and I know that once I've done it, I can't go back.

What do you think? How do I get over the fear of having braces?

I completely understand that feeling. The truth is, most people won't even pay attention. You'll be very self conscious at first but then realize that you're doing it for yourself and to improve your smile, so who cares! Most people have had braces and will understand. Go for it!

I had similar fears when I got an upper brace in my mid 50s when I was running my own small legal practice. I chose damon clear brackets which were not very obvious and I don't think they affected my business even though I could tell on occasions that someone had noticed them. I would have been much less confident if I had chosen more obvious metal brackets and I think it is important in business to be able to project confidence. It may well be that you can be  confident irrespective of the bracket  type you choose. I think it all depends on our personalities and perhaps the sector we work in.

As to the quadhelix,  that might impact on your speech at first and I would suggest you arrange to have a some  holiday immediately after it is fitted. Of course you will have to use that time speaking a lot with friends or family to enable you to overcome any initial speech impediment.

Good luck with your treatment. I never regretted mine.

I understand the fear. I got standard metal braces when I was 35 as well and working in a professional setting.  I was concerned clients would take me less seriously.  Once I got them on, the self-consciousness lasted about a week.  Pretty quickly, I realized that nobody cared.  It was a complete non-issue.  My braces were quite visible.  I had fun wearing brightly colored ligatures and after the initial self-consciousness, I smiled broadly.  People would sometimes compliment the colors on my braces or ask questions if they were interested in wearing braces themselves, so I know that everyone could see them.  But I experienced no negative comments or reactions at all.  Clients continued to take me as seriously as ever.

Go for it!
