Braces vs retainers
« on: 04. May 2024, 02:47:26 AM »
A lot of us love braces, but eventually the braces have to come off  :'(

Retainers are the next best thing. And it’s permanent. For those of you who have had braces before, how do retainers compare for you? Is it as much of a turn on as braces? More? Less?

I think if it is even 50% of the turn on of braces, I would be pretty happy with it

The mouthfilling of retainers is even better then on braces. But the big advantage of braces in my opinion are:
1. the look - a metal smile is uncomparable
2. The impossibility to take them of
3. to be really perfect for me, they need a palatal expander and headgear. A herbst appliance makes them perfecct

I think with braces is it the impossibility to take them off, there is no way. And if you have a palatal expander, if you have turned the screw, the pressure will be there, you can't get rid of it.
With retainers for me the best is the feeling of the acrylic plate in the palate, and the possibility to play with them. And the visibility of the labial bow is very nice.
I think a very strong feeling is with braces and bite plate, or with braces, herbst an both expanders.
But the cool thing on retainers is that you can keep them a long time, and if you like it, you put them in as much as you want.

I'm not really interested in them at all, as someone who has clear retainers and a fixed wire they're pretty boring. You can't really see the clear ones and the wires just don't feel like they're there

Well, having braces over years can cause problems with the bone of the jaw:
If the teeth are permanently fixed, the bone density can reduce over time and even lead to bone loss.
Therefore, you should simply enjoy every phase of the treatment if you want to!
