I use microsoft word but when I drop in a story I lose all of the formatting. Is there a secret?

I used to to find the same thing (when I posted here more often). I think it's just a case of different coding being used (i.e. the forum strips out Word's formatting).

I use OpenOffice when I write stories. You can also try using Google docs and see if that will work for you.
When I am editing my stories, I use Grammarly. It is free for the basic program and upgrading to the premium program is not necessary unless you are using it for a business application or professionally.

I use Microsoft WORD to write and review the story. I use the Comment feature under reviewing to write myself little notes about the story as I go. When I am ready to post, I cut and past into the forum and then review it for formatting such as bolding and italics. Sometimes I even add a few comments. My solution to your problem is to not do the character formatting until I am posting.

I simply write my stories in plain text format, using Wordpad, then cut & paste it. Once I've pasted it, I then look for any highlights, which can indicate mis-smellings... :-)
Of course,spelling checks are sometimes not as good as you hope:
I have a spelling checker,
It came with my PC.
It plainly marks four my revue
Mistakes eye can knot sea.
Iran this poem threw it.
I'm sure your pleased too no
It's letter perfect inn it's weigh,
My checker tolled me sew!
(and that proves my point, not a single word there got highlighted!!!)

I use Grammarly. It is free and catches more mistakes than the spell-checkers that come standard with most programs. Just go to grammarly.com and download and install it. I write using OpenOffice which is also free and has a decent catch rate for the spell-checker. Between the two programs, I have about a 90 percent success rate with catching spelling and grammar mistakes. They can be set for whatever country and language you write in.

Personally I use Google docs and run it through grammarly. I write whatever then edit a lot .
