Hi all - My story
« on: 21. March 2010, 15:36:18 PM »
Hi, long time lurker, first time poster.

Ever since I can remember I've always liked braces, always liked the look of metal in someones mouth. Kinda like mouth jewellery. It wasn't until I got a bit older that I realised that I liked braces more than just looking at them. I remember the first time I saw a friend in a retainer - I saw the metal wire across her teeth, the plastic plate at the top of her mouth - I wanted to know what it felt like.

As time went by I found myself liking retainers more and more, on both guys and girls - I'm open to anything. I found myself craving the feeling of smooth plastic at the top of my mouth, I loved looking around and seeing if anyone was wearing one, I found myself shaking with excitement if I saw something.

Last week I finally plucked up the courage to go to an orthodontist. I called them up and said that "I'd lost my retainer" and would it be possible to get a new one made - they said fine. I couldn't it was that easy! Why hadn't I done this years ago.

I went to get the impression, I felt silly around all the teenagers, what with me being in my mid 20s I was the oldest in there by far. I was called in and the orthodontist asked me if I wanted just a normal retainer, or whether I would like my teeth realigned. I asked him what would be the difference, he put two appliances in my hand, one normal Hawley retainer, and one that was slightly different - I later learnt that this was a "super spring modified Hawley" so I thought, well if I want a retainer anyway, why not make the orthodontic experience somewhat "real" so I opted to have my teeth realigned. He took the impression and told me my retainer would be ready in a week. I walked home quivering with excitement.

Today I went back to the orthodontist to have the retainer fitted. I was called in and I saw my retainer sitting on a tray. I hope he didn't work out how excited I was! He told me to sit down and open my mouth, he placed the retainer in my mouth and pushed it up onto my teeth. The feeling was incredible. I felt around with my tongue - licking the wires, the plastic plate, it was amazing.

I will be going back in a month or so to have it checked, I might get a bottom one too whilst I'm there.

I'm finally braced and I've never felt better!

Great job! It can be so nerve-wracking putting yourself in that kind of situation: you are in a professional clinic that is for making one's teeth better.. but you want so much more too... and maybe you wonder if you belong there. But you do belong there and you did what you needed to do. Just treat the staff with respect and they will do the same. No-one's teeth are 100% perfect and they are there to make you feel better about yourself. Congrats!

I second the congratulations of tingrin and Chris_UK. You are one of the rare female adults with a fascination for braces, and you had the guts to "go all the way". I'm sure that you will wear your retainer(s) with pride in public, and that you will be able to judge the reactions you get from people of various sorts. Tell us about it in time.

I only have a top one at the moment. I'm taking it one step at a time. I think I'm gonna get a bottom one when I go back to the ortho for my "check up"  ;)

I wear my retainer in public all the time, I'm always looking around to see if anyone notices!

If you haven't already seen, I've put up a few more pictures. x

I went to a fast food joint today to grab a bite to eat, went to sit down and took my retainer out in full view. There was this one guy who wouldn't stop staring at me! I wonder if he was "interested"  ;D

As I said a couple of days ago, I'm thinking about getting a lower retainer when I go back to the ortho. I already have a lisp with my top retainer (which is slowly getting better), but does anyone know how hard it'll be to talk if I do get a bottom one as well?

 8) !
I would say there was a pretty good chance the guy was interested... If he noticed you first, then you took out your appliance... and then he kept staring...  ;D

Are you able to pop out your retainer in and out of your mouth without removing it completely? You might try practicing it a bit, and using it as a signal of sorts for the next guy!

Run, don't walk to your orthodontist and get a lower retainer made. You will love the full feeling in your mouth. No need to wait until your next appointment, unless it is not very far off. I doubt you will need an excuse, but you can always say that you don't want your bite to change/drift unevenly.

You will lisp more, (possibly a lot more), from wearing a combined upper and lower retainer. You will get used to it though, as you have noticed by wearing just the upper. But no need to worry, your extra lisp will be extra attractive to guys who appreciate a girl in braces. And for the guys who don't notice braces, your lisp will still get you extra attention!  ;)

Keep up the excellent work!

Can you have any record of your lisp? It would make a joy to a few our members

My next appointment is in about a month, I'll have to wait till then because I need to save up the pennies! I'm looking forward to it though.

@Acornjohn - I don't have a microphone at the moment, but I'll see what I can do. x

So I went yesterday, had my top retainer tightened, it's so tight now, feels amazing! I've also had the impression taken for my bottom retainer, I'll be having that fitted next week. I can't wait! ;D x
