Title: Hawleys
Post by: comonsnse on 08. November 2018, 22:38:23 PM
I just spent 5 days in Disney in Florida. I noticed 2 adults with invisalign/Essix but didn't see any adults or kids with Hawley retainers the whole time!  Are Hawleys dead in the real world?

Definitely seen less and less. Even my wife's ortho is recommending Essix these days. Sad!

Perhaps i am being synical but i suspect profit / ease of making has quite a bit to do with it. I think its quite a quick easy job to make essix retainers, i think they are vacuum formed. But they can probably charge just as much, if not more, as they have the ‘less noticable’ look that many non-enthusiasts like.
The suppliers win each way, especially as they would seem not to be long-lasting.
Anyway, they have no appeal to me. A big smooth plastic plate suits me fine!

I got both Hawley and vacuum formed retainers, 17 years ago, guess what I have the Hawley that still fits and I wore out the vacuum formed retainers.

I have had both kinds of retainers. Hawleys are more comfortable for me.

What are vacuum formed retainers?
As above, the vacuum formed retainers = essix type.

Cant say I've seen anyone with retainers for many years.

I certainly have.
I am in the service industry and have to call at many homes.
I have probably seen kids with hawleys about 5 or six times in the last year and a couple of adults

Totally agree. Clear retainers are much worse, I love Hawley retainers, they are more comfortable and last longer.

Me three - the Hawleys are much easier to wear than Essix type.
