I think the braces would act very much like a fixed retainer on the back of the bottom teeth would. There is the possibility of movement along the archwire, but there would be very little movement. I asked my ortho if it was alright if he left my braces on a little longer. He was Ok with doing that. I also asked him if he would be willing to make me a set of "fake" braces for after I let him take my braces off. He has told me that he will make me a set of essix retainers with my brackets on them. I can even change the ligature colours whenever I want ;D

One of the most fun aspects of fake braces. I used to change the ligs on my wife's fakes all the time. Different colors, power chains, different archwires with different crimpable attachments -- all possible!

Yes, movement along the archwire is the only movement we've seen - extraction gaps widening due to there being no powerchains there. This natural movement of the teeth (as opposed to movement by orthodontic forces) can surely cause no harm.

Your orthodontist sounds very accommodating, do you think his interest in braces may be somewhat in line with ours?

I am dealing with the PTSD. One thing that I found that seemed to be of benefit to me was having the braces. I got the braces about a year before I was involved in an accident that triggered the PTSD. I explained how I felt about the braces seeming to help me. He was willing to work with me on that. I did ask him if he would be willing to make me a set of "fake" braces for when I was ready to get my braces off. I talked with him during my last appointment, and he said that he will use my brackets on a set of Essix retainers to make them.

As for having an "interest" in braces, that is what he does for a living. There would have to be some reason he went to school for that ;D Everyone has a reason for the job they choose. I think that most orthodontists would be willing to work with us if there was a financial benefit to them. They have expenses for everything they do. In my case, he is making a retainer for me at the end of my treatment anyway. The additional cost is in cementing the brackets onto the retainer. Costs: cement  = has lots in stock; labour = maybe an hour; archwire = not much, could use the old one; ligatures = next to nothing.

I would have you with upper and lower expanders, adding a very large tongue crib to your banded upper expander. Extremely tall and very wide making it super visible behind your top teeth at all times.
I would have metal brackets and lip bumpers top and bottom fixed for extra bulk and shiny steel
