Just an appliance would be a twin block / herbst combo. As an addition to braces, I'd say an expander or herbst

So I noticed most people have a general preference when they are talking about appliances. There are the metal appliances(headgear, herbst, expander...) and the plastic/acrylic appliances(such as a bionator). What’s your preference?(mine is the more traditional metal appliances)

For me i would say it's permanent retainers after braces because even if they are barely noticeable it is an appliance that will be there for many many years even after braces were taken off.  :)

I love seeing the look of the metal noticeable appliances, braces, bands, expanders and headgear can make the mouthful that I'll definitely enjoy of! The removable appliances could be nice too (with all the plastic that makes the person uncontrollably lisp), but still, I don't like the idea that it can be taken out  >:D

Very interesting 'besinger'. Such a simple choice. Why is a simple Hawley Retainer your favorite appliance?

On top of regular braces, an all in one both upper and lower expanders, tongue cribs and herbst appliance with an attaching headgear.

Well to answer my own question, I think I'd go for a Herbst appliance. I would love to see what it would feel like. I love the idea that it can't be removed. and it looks like a real mouthful. Headgear is amazing tho. Would be hard to decide between the two. Herbst with wired in headgear would be a dream!

Definitely a twin block, the bulkier the better! Always wanted one but ortho gave me a dynamax instead.

Definitely headgear. I've dreamed of having braces with lots of appliances and headgear for a long time. My teeth were "good", so I never had any treatment. I was always jealous of my friend's headgear, so that's my favorite for sure! The more uncomfortable and bulkier the better!

If I had to choose something realistic (one appliance as the focus, not a mouthful of seven), I’d say lip bumper. I love the struggle to get used to it as the wearer’s lower lip either sinks below the lip bumper, revealing bottom braces, or tries excessively hard to keep the lip above it, revealing a large bump just beneath the teeth

My favorite are definitely palate expanders.
Would love to have a bulky one with an extra tongue crib cemented in as an add-on to my fixed braces. Maybe even with a lower expander and Herbst appliance or headgear.

Currently my Mod. Twinblock with Herbst and Pelottes from the shop für n combination with my combination Headgear.
My plans for this year are to start a real treatment with hopefully some bulky surprises.
In my age, ongoing 50, I‘m pretty sure that fixed braces will be the ortho‘s choice, where I definetly want metall ones. Some molar bands, for headgear use and hopefully something more, that should ve a surprise for me.
Something as a palatal expander ???? tongue habit appliance ???? or even a herbst.
Let‘s hope for the most.
I‘ll keep you informed.

Upper and lower expanders, tongue crib and Herbst appliance with lip bumpers. All glued in. The lisp and not being able to remove is the excitement for me.

Coming back here I recently discovered something called an EVAA appliance, which is like a fixed activator. Thats definitely my new favourite.

Headgear for sure. There's plenty of versatility involved in the color of straps down to the type of facebow involved, and the sheer "can't hide this embarrassing thing poking out of my mouth" factor is incredible. Tongue cribs are for sure a second, since lisps are just amazing to listen to, but the visual aspect and "unhidability" of headgear makes it king for sure.

I have to agree with headgear of any form, but most preferably combination straps, with the straps a nice obvious colour against the patient's hair colour "so it can be seen easily they are wearing it".
Second choice would be a fixed expander, just because of the sheer awkwardness of having to talk and eat with it and either expand it or have it expanded

Headgear (naturally) seems to be a common theme as the most favorite appliance.  What specific configurations do you prefer and why?  Types of straps, facebows, maybe a reverse-pull facemask, colors, etc.

Definitely the combination (high pull and cervical) variant. A set of colored straps that clash noticeably with the wearer's hair color makes the appliance eye-catching from any angle, so there's no use in turning around to try and hide it. In a perfect world, double headgear, or facebows in both jaws, would be the ideal, both impeding speech and creating a very awkward, uncomfortable, and flashy mouth, but since high pull is just more common, that has to take the cake. I think the favorability of headgear comes from its implied history of embarrassment and its established reputation as a symbol of social ridicule. As for why, I'm certain there's some underlying psychological factor that none of us are particularly eager to discuss. (Probably having to do with some sort of common trauma that resulted in our collective liking for braces involving embarrassment) I think it could significantly damper the fun if one were to get sucked too far down into their own curiosity on the matter, though I'd be lying if I said I myself wasn't curious about it. Who knows? Maybe the answer is more positive than we think. One can only hope.

I'd have to say double facebows. The strap configuration being a neck gear and high pull combination. Never seen it in person but enjoy the concept.

I don't have colour preferences.

Palatal expanders by far, especially bulky metal ones with four bands, facemask hooks, and a metal wire running behind the front teeth too.

Probably an expander encased with acrylic.  Same discomfort, extra lisp due to the extra plastic
