How easy is it to fit Ligature Ties to fake braces?
« on: 28. March 2023, 16:49:49 PM »
I'm thinking of getting some of these and adding some bright colour to my braces.

https://dereferer.me/?https://www.bracesshop.com/en/accessories/50/elastomeric-ligature-ties?c=14

No idea how to go about fitting them though and I don't have a dental mold to hold them in place and crucially I don't want to break the braces: I could only afford the top jaw and that alone cost me £178.

How easy is it to put the ligature ties on whilst the braces are in my mouth?

What about trying to fit them whilst supported only by the retainer and my fingers?

Anyone got any tips?

Like I said I don't want to break them so I'd happily drop the idea if it's likely to end in disaster.

I used a metal tooth-pick to Charge them.
I had no idea how strong those ties are, i looks so easy in these Videos. Further i had to realise those ties are really small in my big Fingers. It Was quite a fight for me, but i managed and nothing broke on those fakes.

It could be possible to change them while you wear it, but for me and my not existing fine-motor-skills it would not work ;D

PS: If you order your fakes in the Shop, you brace will be shipped including the mold.

Yes, I did it using molds also.  However I actually found a local retailer that sold dental tools.  It was a surplus store (sells off old stock of manufacturers) and I got a couple of various dental tools for the equivalent of a few £.  The ties are quite hard to manipulate, but I am pretty sure I would not have damaged the fake appliance if I had to hold it in my fingers.  The problem would be pricking the finger that is holding the bracket against the arch-wire.  Just make sure you allow yourself lots of uninterrupted time to do this.

Thanks for the advice Prefade and m1090y appreciate it

Sadly I can’t use my dental moulds as I didn’t keep them.

Maybe look out for a fly-tying vice, or maybe a "third-hand" vice.  Neither is likely to be be cheap, but probably a great deal cheaper than replacing a broken appliance, and they're useful to have around the house.
