Eating with rubberbands in
« on: 07. April 2007, 20:02:41 PM »
Some years ago I saw a girl eating a piece of pizza (like you can buy in the pedestrian areas) while she was wearing her elastics.

Have you got any experiences about eating with rubberbands in? Is it possible to open the mouth as far as necessary to chew comfortably?

Where to put the elastics between taking them out and inserting them again?

Eating with elastics is difficult. It's hard to open your mouth wide enough to chew and they'll end up snapping eventually.

It's a lot easier to take them out, eat, clean, and then put in a fresh set of elastics.

I never tried to eat with my rubberbands in. My dentist told me I had to take them off so I allways did that.
I guess eating with them can't be very confortable.

Elastics come in many varying tensions, so I'd assume the tighter ones could possibly inhibit eating.

I have noticed that most of the orthodontist's websites recommend that you eat with the elastics in. It is probably to encourage patients not to 'forget' to put them back in. The extra tension from chewing might also help the elastics to work better as well.

It of course depends on the elastic configuration you have, for me its ok to eat with them. Just once an elastic broke. Food that glues like hot cheese I eat without elastics, everything else with them in. I feel very strange and naked when I put the elastics out after so long 24/7 wearing, much like a withdrawel feeling like when you have no cigarettes ..
Oh and i have the 1.8N elastics (v. Strong) but not from molars to front teeth, but up 4th to down 3rd+4th on each side. (up 4th to down 3rd and 4th the last 3 months)

How and when you wear elastics is decided by your orthodontist.

I've had them for a long time and always had to wear them 23 hours a day.  Eating with them is a requirement for me, due to the work the elastics need to do, being at it's most when my jaw is working as it does for eating.

When I started wearing them, I was required to change both once a day.  Now it's one side once a day and the other side only when it breaks.

When I had braces and elastics, my orthodontist told me to take them out when eating and to change them a few times a day, so I'd take them out before eating and then put new ones in afterwards.

A friend of mine currently has elastics for his braces, from what I've seen he always keeps them in. I guess they snap a lot though when you eat with them

Mine rarely snap when eating.  If you're wearing the correct size and strength, quality elastics will not break from 'normal' wear.

I had a few elastics break over a month or two and my ortho found that they were rubbing on a part of the bracket that was slightly rough.  He smoothed it, and I've not had a problem since.

Yeah they probably don't break that much, I just remember him having them snap a couple times when we were eating
