Bite-retaining retainer?
« on: 24. March 2022, 04:39:30 AM »
I'm wondering if there is such a thing as a retainer that is designed to also maintain bite post-braces, or put it another way, is there a problem where someone's bite could shift out of position over time and what would be done about that?

I am thinking that the regular hawley retainers are meant to maintain teeth alignment but not necessarily bite alignment.

According to Contemporary Orthodontics, they use a functional appliance as a retainer in these situations.

Anything else perhaps more "extravagant"? I thought positioner weren't really something you would wear for a long time (heard it's pretty painful to wear continuously for a long period so I doubt anyone would continue wearing that for the long term). I'm wondering if there is an equivalent to the standard hawley that you would wear every night let's say for years and years (assuming you are super uber diligent of course :) )

My experience is I got a Hawley retainer to relieve a deep bite, which caused my lower teeth to push against my upper front teeth, causing them to just begin to flare out, resulting in about a 1 mm gap.  The retainer functioned as a bite plate where my lower bicuspids would hit before my lower teeth could reach my uppers.  Also, the ortho put 2 small wire prongs on the wire on each side of my front teeth with pushed them back together.  I wore the retainer 23/7 for a few weeks then just waking hours for about 4 months.  Worked beautifully, now I can hold my mouth comfortably in good position, though I still have a deep bite.  5 years later the gap remains closed.  I have near perfect dentition otherwise, never had braces.
