Chapter 7
"How nice for you that your wife has arranged this for you." The orthodontist puts the contract aside and lowers the chair back. "And it is really great for us that you are so motivated. We don't often experience that patients don't care what braces they get."
She puts some cotton wool in his mouth and blows the molars of the upper teeth dry. "Then we will continue. Look, we will place this first." She shows a block of synthetic resin with a screw in the middle. It looks great. He looks at the colossus with horror. "This is an expander combined with a bite plate." She pushes the bar over the molars. After biting a few more times, she nods satisfied. She shines with a blue light on the molars "That fits."
It feels huge. As if his entire mouth is filled. He tries to ask how long he has to wear the braces "I don't understand you well, but you ask how long you have to wear it. Normally we ask patients to turn the expanders screw every day and they can be removed after two or three months. Now we only turn the braces once every 4 weeks on, so do the math. The advantage is that if you are done with the expanders, you will also have the other braces that are installed today lost within a year or two. "
She picks up new cotton wool rolls and now starts drying the two free molars in the lower teeth. In the meantime, Paul tries to calculate how long he has to go in the expanders. But before he is done, the counting is interrupted. "Bite again."
And before he knows it, a tonguecrib has been placed in his lower jaw. Talking is now almost impossible. "How does it feel", his wife wants to know. He mumbles something unintelligible. "You will get used to it quickly", his wife nods encouragingly. He feels miserable. Trying to ask if he can go now. "Almost", the orthodontist smiles.

You do a devilish job of stopping the story at mouthwatering cliffhangers

Chapter 8
Of course, Paul still needs a thread through the brackets. And yes, the orthodontist does indeed work with the threads. She secures them with silver colored rubber bands. "That's the best thing," she says kindly. "You are a little too old to work with all colors."
He sighs. The sooner this is over, the better he it is. He looks around again. The seats around him are all occupied. He notices that many patients have a headgear. Imagine that he would have to walk around with such a thing on his head ... That would be terrible.
Next to him, a young woman gets a facemask. He estimates her 30. She giggles nervously, and he understands that. It is not nothing to have to walk around with such a monster. He hears that the woman is being told to wear the braces full time and sees her face clouded. "You can't do that to me," she protests, "after all those years with the headgear." She gets explained that there is no escape. That she was told at the start of treatment. And that it is for 'only' two years.
Paul himself waits until the orthodontist says he can leave. He feels that the wires in the brackets put some pressure on his teeth. The orthodontist asks the assistant for 'four thin fixation threads'. Which she then fastens somewhere in the back of his mouth. The threads are half dangling from his mouth. "Well, now we are almost done", the orthodontist says, taking something out of a drawer.

Chapter 9
It feels weird, with all that iron wire hanging out of his mouth. "And this interlandi, and this ...", he hears the orthodontist mumbling as she rumbles in the drawer. Then she leans over him and slides a facebow into the tubes that are on the bands around his back teeth of his upper jaw. With a pair of pliers, she fiddles with the iron wires and he hears how they are cut. Exactly the same happens with the lower jaw. "Well, all done", the orthodontist says, putting away the pincers. She returns the chair in the upright position. Paul feels with his tongue and lips what she has done in his mouth. No ... "Please put your head a little forward so that we can put the interlandi headcap on your head", the orthodontist interrupts his thoughts. Meekly, he sits slightly forward and feels that bands are being slid around his head. The interlandi is attached to the upper facebow that protrudes from his mouth with elastics. "And now the neckband for the lower facebow," smiles the orthodontist. And when this one is, she hands him a mirror. "You can also see for yourself what we have done in recent hours." Paul casts a panicked eye on his wife. He nods reassuringly at the mirror in his hand. "Just look," she says, seeing her eyes full of disbelief. "It's not so bad."
He is holding the mirror to his face. To quickly look away again. This cannot be true ... "What do you think about it," the orthodontist wants to know. Paul stumbles. His wife says he cannot be understood. He tries to talk again. "It's ...", followed by some murmuring.
"It is not easy yet, to talk," the orthodontist nods understandingly. "But that will improve a bit." She starts explaining how the interlandi and the neckband can be loosened. "The facebows are stuck so it's easy, you don't have to do anything with it." He sees his wife nodding understandingly. And ask how long the braces must be worn. "As mentioned, the expanders are the first to go out. The headgears can come out a little later when the teeth are about 5 mm too far back, while the teeth are now much too far forward. We pull them further back than necessary because we then pull them forward with a facemask. In this way we hope that the teeth will stay in place better after the treatment. "

Chapter 10
Paul does not believe his ears. Also a facemask .... This cannot be true, this must be a bad dream. "You can make a new appointment at the counter for 4 weeks."
All of a sudden Paul is reminded of what the orthodontist said about the expanders. Normally 2 to 3 months and tighten every day, but now only tighten once every four weeks ... It is dizzy ... a month has 30 days, so 60 to 90 ... weeks? That is more than a year ... dear ... if he has calculated correctly ... His wife wants to know how long the facemask will have to be worn. "Not as long as the headgears, no worries"; reassures the orthodontist. "About half as long."  She extends her hand to Paul. "Congratulations again and have a very nice day today."
After which she hands him a copy of the contract and runs away. Paul walks to the counter with his wife to make a follow-up appointment. His wife takes him once outside by both hands and looks at him excitedly. "What a surprise, isn't it! I like it so much that I could arrange this for you all. Your teeth will soon be beautiful."
