[STORY] Rare Orthodontics / Chapter 4 is ready!
« on: 23. November 2020, 02:35:38 AM »
Logan never had it easy. His fragile appearance, combined with his shyness and reservedness, made him an easy target for bullies throughout his school career. At 18 years old, he was halfway through his senior year in high school, patiently waiting for that hell to end and to finally be able to move out of town somewhere he could start all over.

The football team was especially hard on him. Never a day went by that he wouldn't get picked on in the hallway or pushed over in the cafeteria by the sport jerks. Things got even worse when he got braces a few days after turning 18--his double fixed expanders gave him a noticeable lisp, which in turn gave his bullies yet another excuse to tease him. At least they wouldn't have gotten to see him in headgear, which he fortunately only needed to wear sixteen hours a day (and since he didn't have much of a social life or somewhere to go after school, nobody was to know about his external appliance he'd put on when he got home and take off the following morning when he woke up).

Among the football bros, Ethan was by far the one that gave him the most trouble. Standing at over six feet, he'd walk up to half-a-foot-shorter Logan and be like, "whassup metal mouth," before pushing him to the ground and laughing at him surrounded by his testosterone-filled friends. He seemed to do it for no apparent reason, just for fun. Scenes like this had been daily routine for a while, until one day, during a dental checkup, the dentist recommended Ethan's parents to see an orthodontist. Sure, he had just turned 18, but mom and dad were still going to pay for college, so he still sort of depended on them. Not like an orthodontist visit worried him anyway, he knew all about Invisalign, as many of his teammates had fixed their teeth this way.

A few days later, Ethan walked into Rare Orthodontics, the town's newest office, where all the personnel was young and fresh out of dental school. "Dr. Gomez is ready to visit you. She's waiting for you upstairs," the receptionist informed Ethan. Dr. Gomez welcomed her patient into her studio with a radiant smile. She was a sweet-looking petite in her late 20s, with her mid-length brunette hair falling softly over her shoulders and her lively black eyes betraying a sharp intelligence and professionalism.

"Please help yourself on the chair, as my assistant and I get everything ready for your impressions," Dr. Gomez said with remarkable sweetness in her breathy, almost ASMR-like voice. Shortly after Ethan laid down, Dr. Gomez started inspecting his mouth.
"Camila, come see this!" said Dr. Gomez after a few seconds.
"My oh my!" exclaimed the assistant, as she inserted the molds into the patient's mouth. "This might take you a minute, but you will get used to this. There will be some work to do here."
"Tell me something I don't know," Dr. Gomez replied, amazed by how so many problems with his teeth alignment, as well as his bite, had been ignored for so long. Normally, his crowding and overbite would have gotten him referred to an orthodontist at a tender age so that he would've been over with whatever treatment would've fixed his teeth, but in Ethan's case, it was way too late for a normal treatment. Still, Dr. Gomez and her assistant's words didn't worry him at all. There was not a doubt in his mind he would be getting those clear braces most of his friends had had.
"Alright Ethan, we've taken your impressions, and we'll be studying your case to find the best treatment for you. We can discuss it tomorrow at the same time. Have a great day," said Dr. Gomez as she dismissed her patient, who said bye and left the office satisfied by the reassuring atmosphere.

At the same time, on the other side of town, Logan had just gotten home from school. As he'd been doing for the past month, the first thing he did was put on his headgear, which was to stay on for the following sixteen hours. He slid his facebow into his mouth, and when its ends had connected to the headgear tubes in his upper molars, he put on his neck strap first, and then his head strap, both vibrant blue, in contrast with his brown hair. The head strap flattened his curls that he kept longer at the front, and shorter on the sides. He first turned his upper expander, then his lower one, for the twenty-eighth and last time. He adjusted his glasses, and proceeded to admire the bulky metal plaques that had expanded both his jaws, and wondered if he was ever going to get used to them--it had been a month, and he still had a noticeable lisp, other than the fact that food would get stuck in between there all the time. Just like he'd done for the past month, he tried to distract himself from the discomfort of his metal mouth and headgear by doing homework, playing video games and watching a series. Maybe, he would have talked about his nuisance to Dr. Gomez on his first tightening that was to take place the very next day at Rare Orthodontics.

"Dr. Gomez is waiting for you upstairs," the receptionist announced to Logan, who was waiting in Rare Orthodontics' hall with his headgear on, ready to have his first braces tightening. As radiant as ever, Dr. Gomez and her assistant Camila welcomed the young patient into their studio with their million dollar smiles.
"Hi Logan! Please help yourself with the chair," said the orthodontist as she put her latex gloves on. "You've been wearing your headgear sixteen hours a day as prescribed... and it shows!" she exclaimed satisfied. "About seventeen more months like this, and we'll be halfway through with your treatment." Logan's eyes widened to the thought of having to go through one more year and a half of that, but he knew that if he wasn't to comply, the alternative would've been much worse. "And your expanders have been working well, but not well enough. Keep turning them twice a week for another month!"
"About the expanders," interrupted Logan, "I still haven't quite gotten used to speaking or eating with them. Is this normal, or...?"
Dr. Gomez started removing the ligatures from each bracket, and proceeded to change the wire. "You'll get used to them sooner than you think. They'll be with you for the rest of your treatment, and when they'll come off you'll have gotten used to them to the point you'll need to learn to speak without them!"
The orthodontist wedged a new, thicker wire into all of Logan's brackets, applied the ligatures of his color of choice--black, just like his mood, and put the headgear back on him before saying bye.

As Logan went back into the waiting hall, he saw a familiar face at the reception: it was Ethan, his bully! And he had just seen him in headgear... yikes! Ethan repressed a loud laugh out of decency and blurted a "loser" directed at Logan, who was trying to fix the next appointment as quickly as possible to get out and minimize the embarrassment. Before he could go, the receptionist informed Ethan that Dr. Gomez was waiting for him upstairs.
"Morning, Dr. Gomez! Camila!" said a confident Ethan as he entered the pristine office.
"Ethan!" exclaimed the two doctors in unison. As Dr. Gomez went into another room to pick the utensils needed for the visit, Camila proceeded: "So happy to see you in such a great mood on your fitting day!"
"Fitting day? Weren't we supposed to discuss treatment options? Because I..."
"Actually, no! Your parents came in earlier this morning, approved the treatment Dr. Gomez presented, and paid for it! So she decided to avoid wasting any time, and start your treatment right here, right now!"
"Uh... am I getting Invisalign?"
"Invaseline? We don't know or use that word here."
"Like, transparent braces or that stuff..." Ethan had a bad kind of butterflies in his stomach.
"Oh, clear brackets? If you wanted them so desperately, you should've said it."
Dr. Gomez appeared with a tray full of metal. "Please lay back and try to relax, this will take a while!"
Ethan was petrified, as Camila applied his mouth opener and quickly (and painfully) placed eight separators between his molars. Ethan showed no emotions, as he wanted to show that he was "the man", and not some whiny kid. In the next forty-five minutes, the two doctors were busy placing metal brackets on all of Ethan's incisors, canines and bicuspids.
Once she was done, Dr. Gomez spoke again: "Alright Ethan, this is your palatal expander. These bands at its ends will wrap your molars like a ring; we'll place a similar device on your bottom jaw as well. You will have to turn both of them with this special key twice a week for three months, as I need the jaws to widen slowly. This other smaller appliance is a tongue crib we will apply to your upper jaw for the first few months of treatment to fix your slight open bite." The two doctors proceeded to cement the appliances to a stunned Ethan's teeth, before bonding everything together with wires and, finally, steel ligatures.
But the tray wasn't empty yet. "One last thing--your headgear!" Camila slid a shiny facebow into Ethan's upper jaw, and then proceeded to show him how to attach the neck and the head straps. "This is to be worn twenty hours a day, that is pretty much all the time, except for sports, meals and showering."
Ethan tried to speak for the first time with his appliances, but his major lisp made it hard for him to express himself. Dr. Gomez reassured him: "I know this all looks kinda crazy (and not the good kind, maybe), but you know what--Camila has been into an extensive orthodontic treatment too, and look at her now!"
"Something's gotta give, and something's gotta break if you want perfect teeth," added the assistant with confidence.
"My parents agreed to this?!" exclaimed Ethan, incredulous.
"You were referred to Rare Orthodontics for a reason--you're a rare case! We turn a crowded mouth into a sweeter place. Your case might require a lengthy treatment, but it will all be worth it in the end. Now go home, and remember your instructions: two turns per expander per week, twenty hours a day of headgear wear. See you in a month!"

As Ethan arrived home, partly for the shock and partly for the overall numbness he felt, he fell asleep and didn't wake up until the next morning. Only then, for the first time, he managed to look in the mirror and closely inspect what was now to stay anchored to his mouth for a while. The tongue crib was noticeable anytime he opened his mouth; the wavy metal structure made his mouth look like a prison cell. Both expanders had bulky metal plaques that made speaking even harder. Each tooth was covered in a rather thick metal bracket, all intertwined by metal wires, and kept in place by steel ligatures. He was a certified metal mouth... and then there was the biggest embarrassment of it all, the vibrant blue straps of his headgear that wrapped his head. If until the day before he looked like a young Colton Haynes, with his defined jaw and model-like features, the most noticeable thing about him now was his extensive metalwork and all the problems that came with it. Still, as the brave man he was, he decided to head to school with his headgear as prescribed. He hid the straps under a hood, and promised himself that if it got too hard, he would have just taken it off.

He parked his car in front of school and headed in as confident as he could. Unsurprisingly, all he got was gobsmacked looks mixed with repressed laughs. Nobody dared to laugh at his face because of his menacing muscly body, but indeed, everyone was laughing behind his back. He got through four periods in that state, trying his hardest to keep his head high and show his signature confidence.
Before lunch time, as he was putting back his books into his locker and taking off his headgear, his girlfriend, Ariana, approached him. She knew very well he was gay, but his status (and his closetedness) had allowed her to become the most popular girl in school.
"floating / processing / scariana af / don't have words yet but i'm not vibin witchu anymore" was all she was able to say when she saw Ethan in that uncool state. His appliances made him hard to understand, but not as hard as his mumbling, slang-loving girlfriend.
"Scared of what? Wh-what do you mean by that?"
"i got one less problem without u. this is the part when i break free."
"Are you breaking up with me?" Ethan couldn't believe it. The girl who had made him break up with his girlfriend just because she was bored, the girl he'd bought seven rings for... was now giving him a big, fat thank you, next.
"yuh" was all she answered, before turning around and slapping her long ponytail against his face, leaving one or two fake hairs stuck in his braces.
Two of his teammates witnessed the scene and laughed as Ariana walked side to side, getting away from her ex. "You're embarrassing, bruh," they laughed and mocked him.
Ethan was on the verge of tears. He didn't want anyone to see him that way, so he decided to just go home early and rethink his life without his popularity, fake friends and fake girlfriend. As he was heading out of school, he crossed Logan... who, for the first time, wasn't scared of him and instead gave him a shy, shiny smile.

Despite his risky attempt at being friendly with his bully, Logan soon understood that Ethan was not to be disturbed. Minutes after having been left by his girlfriend and mocked by his friends, he was in a state of confusion, anger and depression, and he responded to Logan's smile by punching it and making his lip bleed a little. Without looking back, he sprinted home and decided to put his reputation first. To hell Dr. Gomez and her prescribed twenty hours of daily headgear wear, he wasn't going to wear that thing in public. He showed up the next day in school with no facebow or straps over his head, and he did so for the rest of the month. And even at home, he'd pass on wearing headgear most of the time. He was adamant on telling her that he wasn't going to compromise; he was going to end his treatment without the headgear, whether she liked it or not.

Dr. Gomez was not of the same opinion.
"I don't have it all, I'm not claiming to," she said to Ethan as soon as she saw him for his first tightening. "But I know that I'm good at what I do. It feels like you don't care. Why don't you recognize I'm doing this for your good?"
"There's no way I'm wearing this again, let alone in public," Ethan replied. "I was made fun of, my girlfriend even broke up with me. Enough."
"People can go from people you know to people you don't," spilled Dr. Gomez. Her assistant Camila added: "You should start looking for some real friends."
Before Ethan could say anything back, Dr. Gomez started looking closely inside his mouth. With deep disappointment, she noticed right away he hadn't even turned his expanders. Out of the sixteen turns he was supposed to do, he'd done zero.
"Here at Rare Orthodontics, we appreciate compliance from our patients," said the embittered doctor while trying to keep her cool. "Out of two things you were asked to do, you didn't even remotely try to do either. And in order to help you comply, today I'll make the stars dance for you."
Ethan realized what Dr. Gomez meant by that stellar metaphor as soon as she started turning his upper expander one, two, three, four, five, six, seven... eight times in a row. She then proceeded to do the same with the bottom expander. The pain was atrocious, but the point had gotten through: cheating was not accepted in any shape or form by Dr. Gomez.
"Today I can't keep my hands to myself. I mean, I could, but why would I want to?" whispered Dr. Gomez while she grabbed some metal wires and pliers, and moments later she was working on Ethan's molars.
In about two minutes she was done, and she quickly dismissed her livid patient, but not without reminding him to wear his headgear straps for twenty hours a day and to turn both expanders twice a week.
As soon as he arrived home, Ethan removed his straps, and then moved on to his facebow. No matter how hard he tried, it wouldn't come off. He soon realized Dr. Gomez had wired it in. "Fuck you Dr. Gargamel! Fuck you Cuntmila!!!" he screamed, raging, while throwing fists at the punching bag he always used to build up his muscles at home.

The next day, Ethan had no choice but to show up in school all strapped up. He'd accepted that everyone was going to laugh behind his back, and that the situation had gotten out of his control. Ariana, his ex girlfriend, had already moved on and found herself a new boyfriend--who happened to be Ethan's own former best friend. Betrayed and lonely, he decided to follow Camila's recommendation to find himself some real friends, even though everyone seemed to dislike him in school.
As he was getting in his car to go home, he saw Logan waiting for the bus, and decided to offer him a lift. Logan empathized with his former bully's situation, and gladly accepted. The pair ended up staying over at Ethan's house to study for the following day's biology test.
"By the way," Ethan said at one point, "I'm sorry man, for punching you, and the teasing, and everything else, basically."
"It's no problem, we're going through the same thing, so we should stick together. Just treat me nicely from now on."
"Yeah, don't worry bro. I mean, I've never seen you in headgear at school, while I can't take mine off..."
"Mine is just sixteen hours a day. I heard Dr. Gomez is quite strict, so I always made sure to be fully compliant."
"Ha, I wish I'd known! She even gave me a month's worth of expander turns in one minute, I had to take pain killers from the headache she gave me. Gotta do what she orders without complaining!"
"I also have to turn my expanders!" Logan exclaimed, excited that their treatments had yet another thing in common.
Ethan gave him a genuine smile. "Alright man, let me do this for you!" The hunky dude grabbed his key and made the smaller guy lay down on his bed and open his mouth. He fit his key into Logan's upper expander's hole, and turned it. Then, he did the same with his lower expander. Logan let out a little moan after each turn.
"Your turn to turn now!" Ethan said, as he switched positions with Logan, who was now in charge of expanding his friend's jaws. There was some sort of unusual intimacy in this gesture they'd just shared, that made Logan feel like he'd found a faithful companion for the first time in his life. Ethan had been mean to him until the day before, and suddenly, he'd become sweet, caring and fun to be around. And this was all thanks to their orthodontic treatments, that gave them a reason to get to know each other and find out that they had much more in common than they thought. "Thank you Dr. Godmez. Thank you Camilegend," he thought to himself.

Logan ended up sleeping over at Ethan's house. The next morning, Ethan woke up in a relaxed mood. Sure, the headgear was annoying and the braces and appliances were still uncomfortable, but sharing the experience with Logan somehow made everything... tolerable?
Ethan started his car and waited for his friend, who was taking a little longer to get ready. When he came out from the front door, he was wearing his facebow and combination straps. "If you're stuck in headgear for a month, then I won't let you go through it alone."
